The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We’ve personally tested and researched dozens of nontoxic self-tanner lotions and self-tanning products — these are our editor’s top picks for safe, clean, and streak-free options at a range of price points.

We crave the feeling of the hot sun on our skin and the afterglow of a good tan, although our idea of tan and what actually happens (i.e., skin turns red, burns, peels, then freckles back to normal) are two different things. This is where self-tanner comes in. Get the glow without the burn, UV damage, and subsequent wrinkles. But what you use to get your glow is super important.

Why use nontoxic self-tanner?

A study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that skin absorbs an average of 64% of contaminants. Typical self-tanners contain toxic ingredients, including mineral oil (a petroleum-based product that blocks pores and can be carcinogenic); sodium hydroxymethylglycinate which may break down into formaldehyde; isopropyl myristate which may bind to skin as nitrate (a carcinogen); amyl acetate which is sometimes used as a paint and lacquer solvent (gross); octyl stearate, an irritant that blocks pores; and other artificial fragrances and dyes made of petrochemicals.

Since none of us wants our largest organ covered in potentially cancer-causing chemicals, not to mention the nasty smell of DHA, we’ve rounded up the best nontoxic tanning lotions to keep your summer glow without the toxic load.

Our criteria:

Our editors have tested, researched, and scoured thousands of customer reviews to determine the very best natural skincare brands. These brands are organic, chemical-free, and luxurious, and they come at a variety of prices. We update this list regularly with emerging favorites that meet the criteria below.

  • NATURAL/ORGANIC | Each of these self-tanners is made with clean, natural, and organic ingredients that are safe and nourishing for your skin.
  • EFFICACY | We’ve tested and researched the best self-tanners to ensure their formulas are effective and will give you the glow you desire (without the streaks!).
  • AFFORDABILITY | Natural beauty can be expensive! We’ve included self-tanner brands that are easy on the wallet, so we can all benefit from the products.

Don’t forget the sunscreen! Just because you have a tan doesn’t mean you can forgo lathering up. Here are our favorite nontoxic and mineral sunscreens (and face sunscreens, too).

For the face, they have two options: Bronzing Face Drops or the Antioxidant Face Tanning Micromist, which includes the brand’s promise of a natural-looking tan in two hours that can last four days. The accessories line is impressive: an exfoliating mitt, soft velvet tanning mitt, back tan applicator, face kabuki brush, and a body kabuki brush. Customer Review | “This is such a reliable glowy tan. Exactly what I wanted for my bridal shower (see pictures!). I use the medium color and it’s perfect. Sometimes if I have drier patches of skin it looks blotchy upon application, but it always comes out super even, so don’t be alarmed at first! When you rinse off, there’s usually an initial layer of “brown” tint that rinses off, then almost a “green” tint when you use soap. So make sure to use soap as well if you’ll be wearing light colored clothes! This is so worth it!” – Haley (Read all reviews.)

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

I tested the best natural and nontoxic body lotion on my sensitive skin. Here are my favorites that are clean, moisturizing, and easy to apply.

As the weather changes, so do our skin concerns — from sunburn in the summertime to the dry flakiness that comes with colder temperatures. And since our skin absorbs the majority of lotions and creams we put onto it, it’s essential to be mindful of the ingredients in our personal care products.

Why use organic body lotion?

Using organic body lotion is a great way to nourish your skin without exposing it to harsh chemicals or synthetic ingredients. Organic lotions made with natural ingredients like plant oils, butters, and essential oils, are gentler and more beneficial for your skin — especially if it’s sensitive. Plus, they often contain fewer additives and preservatives, reducing the chances of irritation or allergic reactions. To ensure your body lotion is made with clean ingredients, keep an eye out for synthetic fragrances and hormone-disrupting chemicals, like phthalates and parabens. You’ll want to avoid these whenever possible.

Fortunately, we’ve found the best natural and nutrient-rich lotion formulas, many of which are safe for the entire family. I’ve spent weeks testing each one, making notes on each. For nourishing skin hydration that you can feel good about all season long, keep on reading!

What should you look for when shopping clean body lotion?

When shopping for an organic body lotion that prioritizes safety and sustainability it’s important to consider both the ingredients and the third-party certifications the brand has acquired. Look for ingredients like nutrient-rich plant oils (e.g. jojoba, coconut, argon), soothing botanical extracts (e.g. chamomile, calendula, aloe vera), natural moisturizers like shea and cocoa butter, and key antioxidants like vitamin E, green tea extract, and rosehip oil. Reputable certifications to watch for include USDA Organic, Ecocert, COSMOS, NATRUE, and Leaping Bunny. Generally, avoid formulas that contain synthetic fragrances (labeled “fragrance” or “parfum”) and dyes, parabens, phthalates, and alcohols, which can dry out skin.

It’s also important to consider your preferences regarding feel and fragrance. Do you enjoy a lotion that is lightweight? Or a hearty balm that is deeply nourishing? Lotions have a thinner consistency and will typically run down one’s arm if gravity is left to its own devices, whereas a body butter is much thicker and stays put until it’s rubbed in. As for fragrance, I personally prefer an unscented moisturizer as it is easiest on sensitive skin. However, if you prefer a scented lotion, opt for one that’s formulated with plant-derived essential oils or other natural aromatic compounds.

A note on plastic packaging:

While it might seem like the most sustainable thing to do would be to cut out plastic packaging altogether and put our cosmetics in either glass or compostable containers, the truth is that it’s complicated. For example, glass is heavy, leading to higher CO2 emissions in transit, and compostable packaging is permeable, compromising the longevity of natural and organic ingredients. Packaging products in recycled plastic cuts down on CO2 emissions during transport (and thus, cost), and lends itself to safety (shatterproof) and functionality (durable). Additionally, brands that refrain from using preservatives in their formulations require airtight containers to prevent their natural ingredients from becoming rancid or evaporating, which makes compostable packaging not a great fit either. When it comes to sustainability, it’s important to dig into a brand’s specific ethos, history, and long-term environmental goals.

Our criteria:

I tested 9 nontoxic body lotions on my sensitive skin. Read on for my experience with each!

We’ve used, researched, and reviewed clean beauty and skincare for years. These are our favorite organic body lotions that use natural ingredients and are super moisturizing. Even those with sensitive skin (like me!) will find options on this list. We regularly update our guide with new picks that meet the criteria below.

  • ORGANIC | We’ve selected options that use organic ingredients so you can be sure nothing was treated with harmful chemicals at any point in the process.
  • NATURAL INGREDIENTS | These brands use natural ingredients like almond, black currant, and calendula to supercharge their formulas while avoiding parabens, phthalates, or artificial fragrance.
  • MOISTURIZING | We’ve personally used these brands and found that their formulas are super hydrating and never harmful.

Don’t forget that cleansing and caring for our bodies pre-lotion can also help improve the appearance of skin over time. For your best skin yet, add these natural body washes, and soft, organic towels to your body care routine. Looking for organic face lotion? Kate’s Review | “I’ve reached for Osea’s body butter above all others, particularly for my legs post-shower, and it leaves my perpetually dry skin quenched for nearly 24 hours. As for their body lotion, the formula feels weightless and refreshing – I love this option for my hands. The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

I spent months testing the best organic, natural, and nontoxic body washes on the market — these are my favorites for clean, nourished body care.

Is there anything more luxurious than a hot shower or a long, leisurely bath? I think not. It’s my preferred way to wind down at the end of the day, and my go-to self-care practice that is sure to soothe my nervous system. I typically opt for a simple, gentle cleanser for all over body care, but occasionally I love to indulge with a natural body wash made with organic ingredients that leaves my skin feeling nourished and healthy without stripping it of its natural oils.

Why choose natural, nontoxic body wash?

Natural and organic body washes typically contain fewer synthetic chemicals, reducing the risk of skin irritation, allergies, and other dermatological issues, making them ideal for sensitive skin or conditions like eczema and psoriasis (both of which I have). By avoiding harmful ingredients like parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances, natural body washes can help mitigate health concerns such as hormone disruption and carcinogenic effects. They often include nourishing ingredients such as aloe vera, coconut oil, shea butter, and essential oils, which provide hydration and essential nutrients.

Additionally, natural body washes are generally more environmentally friendly, utilizing biodegradable ingredients and sustainable packaging, therefore reducing pollution and the carbon footprint. Many of these products are also cruelty-free, aligning with ethical and humane treatment of animals.

Made with organic and natural ingredients, our team has done the research for you to find the best body wash formulas that are cruelty-free, vegan, nontoxic, and gentle on sensitive skin.

What should you look for when shopping natural and organic body wash?

When shopping for an organic and natural body wash that prioritizes safety and sustainability it’s important to consider both the ingredients and the third-party certifications the brand has procured. A good rule of thumb to remember is that formulas that contain generally recognizable ingredients is a good sign. At the same time, these formulas are a science, and even necessary, safe additives and preservatives aren’t typically recognizable to the average layperson. Unless you’re a scientist that can distinguish chemical compounds, it can be a challenge to digest an ingredient list. Look for ingredients such as natural oils and butters (e.g. coconut, shea, jojoba), botanical extracts (e.g. chamomile, calendula, aloe vera), and plant based cleansing agents (e.g. coconut oil, sodium olivate, sucrose stearate). Reputable certifications to watch for include USDA certified organic, Ecocert, COSMOS, and NATRUE. Generally avoid formulas that contain sulfates, synthetic fragrances and dyes (labeled “fragrance” or “parfum”), parabens, and phthalates.

Additionally, body washes come in all shapes and sizes, and the most sustainable option is the one you’ll use. It’s important to consider your lifestyle, sensory preferences, budget and bathing frequency when selecting a body wash. For example, if you opt for a concentrate, but know you’re not going to take the time to complete the extra step of diluting the formula, it may be best to select a different option. I’ve included my notes below on which option may be preferable for certain folks.

Our criteria & methodology:

Our team has used, researched, and corresponded with the top clean beauty and skincare brands for years. Together we’ve chosen our favorite natural body washes that are nontoxic, organic, and leave you feeling fresh, and I personally tried and compared each one in my own home, making notes on scent, consistency, sustainability specs, and more based on my own preferences and our readers’ interests.

I personally tested 10 of the best natural and organic body washes on the market.
Read on for my notes on feel, aroma, sustainability standards, and more, for each!

To contextualize my reviews, I’ll share a bit about myself: I live in Southern California with my partner and our two children. I’ve lived with atopic dermatitis all my life, so ingredient transparency is extremely important not only for the sake of our skin (no surprises, please!) but also for the sake of those in the ingredient supply chain and the planet. Due to my sensitive skin and our dry climate, I reach for products that keep our skin calm and moisturized. I also love products that can multitask, keep our lives simple, budget-friendly, and our countertops clearer. I also have a sweet spot for a little luxury, too. 😉

We regularly update this guide with emerging favorites that meet the following criteria.

  • NATURAL INGREDIENTS | All of the brands on this list use sustainable and natural ingredients that are healthy, smell great, and offer functional benefits.
  • NONTOXIC/CHEMICAL-FREE | We’ve chosen options that are certified nontoxic so no harsh chemicals make their way into your cleansing routine.
  • CLEANSING | These are all effective and lovely to use. You’ll want to keep them as part of your daily routine for years to come.
  • HYDRATING | Because of their natural and nontoxic ingredients, these body washes replenish you rather than stripping your skin of the moisture it needs. Say hello to dewy, plump skin.

Best For | Daily washes
Natural Ingredients | Aloe, patchouli, tea tree, eucalyptus
Price | $26

No sulfates and all the lather: Meet Ursa Major’s Hoppin’ Fresh Body Wash. If you’re a fan of suds and a deep clean, you’ll love this natural formula bringing together peppermint, eucalyptus, citrus and more. With a bright minty scent, you’ll be left with a zing and zest to take you through the day. Invigorating and with a generous foam, we felt squeaky clean and energized post-shower. (And if it turns out it’s not for you, Ursa Major offers a 30-day guarantee for exchanges or returns.)

Kate’s Review  | “Lather lovers unite! If you’re one to prioritize a thick, foamy consistency, this is the pick for you. Though the aroma is gender neutral, Ursa Major’s formula makes me think of my husband – someone who relies on his AM shower to wake him up in the morning, who loves a fresh scent, and who will only choose a cleanser that has ample suds.”

3. Nécessaire

1% for the planet
B corp
Climate neutral

Vegan

Best For | Spa-like experience
Natural Ingredients | Niacinamide, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, omega-6, omega-9
Price Range | $28–$42

Nécessaire’s vitamin-rich body wash offers the perfect combo of cleansing and skin-preserving benefits. Available in both fragrance-free and scented versions — we are big fans of the Eucalyptus — this body wash has the texture of a classic liquid body wash, but with the benefits of nourishing ingredients like niacinamide, vitamin A, C, E, and omega 6 and 9. It also easily washes away dirt, odor, and debris from your skin, even without a loofah (though if you’re looking for a rich lather, you should definitely use one!). If you’re not a fan of strong scents, the scented varieties of this body wash are light, leaving you with softly scented just-came-from-the-spa skin, without feeling overpowering.

Kate’s Review | “Necessaire’s product line always feels high-end, and their body wash is no different. The scent is present yet subtle, and is available in an unscented option as well (something I personally think all brands should provide). The price point is higher than I would personally spend on a wash, but a small amount lathers well and feels luxurious. Whether you’re looking to treat yourself to an elevated experience or give the gift of self-care, you can’t go wrong with Necessaire.”

4. cocokind

cocokind’s new Milky-Soft Face & Body Cleanser is a creamy, ultra-gentle wash designed to simplify your routine without compromising on skin health. Formulated with soothing aloe vera, calming oat extract, and nourishing rice protein, this pH-balanced cleanser supports the skin barrier while effectively removing dirt and buildup from both face and body. The milky texture feels soft and hydrating rather than foamy or stripping, making it especially lovely for dry, reactive, or eczema-prone skin. True to cocokind’s ethos, the formula is vegan, cruelty-free, fragrance-free, and dermatologist-tested — a thoughtful option for the whole family.

Kate’s Review | “I can confirm cocokind’s face and body cleanser is as soft as it sounds and is suitable for even the most sensitive among us. Bonus? This formula is skincare-grade and can serve as both your face and body wash for a streamlined shower routine. I am, in a word, obsessed with this wash, and emerge feeling like a silky goddess.”

5. Bathing Culture

American made
Biodegradable
Cruelty free
Recycled materials
Subscriptions available
Vegan

Best For | Low-waste options
Natural Ingredients | Organic coconut, olive, and sunflower oils, natural plant glycerin (soybean), aloe vera, shea butter & essential oils
Price | $36

Bathing Culture launched in 2015 after its founders, two cyclists, joked they’d never be able to get clean. Sick of soaps that were either too watery or stripped their skin of moisture, the company’s Mind and Body Wash is made with certified organic ingredients like aloe vera, shea butter, and coconut, olive, and sunflower oils. Best described by our partners as a “grown-up body wash that doesn’t feel like a 10-in-1”, this organic formula smells like the redwoods of Northern California with an energizing kick of black pepper. As a gender-neutral scent, it’s perfect to use across the whole family — and the gorgeous, reusable packaging serves as a statement piece that adds a nice touch to the household bathroom, too.

Kate’s Review | “Bathing Culture’s formula is concentrated without feeling harsh, and the sustainable packaging is also a vibe. One bottle is enough for 80 showers, which means a little goes a very long way. If you love this wash as much as I do, I highly recommend investing in the one-gallon refillable bottle if it’s feasible to save on long-term cost, packaging waste, and carbon waste from shipping.”

6. Plaine Products

Biodegradable
Cruelty free
Eco friendly packaging

Vegan

Best For | Normal to sensitive skin
Natural Ingredients | Organic aloe leaf juice, organic camellia, sunflower, and rice bran seed oils
Price Range | $12–$285

Plaine Products’ Body Wash is made for low-waste lifestyles! This refillable and reusable product is made with aluminum and can be purchased with or without a BPA-free plastic pump. (You can also send it back to recycle when you’re done using it!) The formula itself will leave you with soft skin thanks to organic and natural ingredients like pineapple and papaya pulp extracts, bamboo silk, and aloe leaf juice. Minty and sweet all at once, the Rosemary Mint Vanilla is like bathing inside a candy cane tub (but in the best way!). It feels clarifying, cooling, and calming all at once. Plus, thanks to the aloe juice, we enjoy how it has more viscosity than water-based formulas and lends itself to a more robust lather. Best of all, the packaging came with clear steps on how to recycle and refill when needed.

Kate’s Review | “Plaine Products’ body wash formula is no nonsense. Low waste, reasonable cost, clear refill instructions and a lather suited for any skin type. The rosemary mint vanilla scent is sweet yet earthy, and I appreciate any brand that offers an unscented version for those of us (me!) who are sensitive to additional fragrant ingredients or who are simply trying to cut fragrance out entirely.”

7. 100% PURE

American made
Cruelty free
Gluten free
Vegetarian

Best For | Combo skin
Natural Ingredients | Lavender essential oil, honey, red algae, green tea, rose hydrosol
Price Range | $20–$25

Indulge in a luxurious bath with 100% PURE. Its Vanilla Bean Shower Gel is nontoxic, 100 percent natural, and made with organic aloe, vanilla absolute, lavender honey, and Japanese honeysuckle for a sweet, aromatic scent. Instead of artificial vanilla scents you’ll find elsewhere (whether in food or fragrance), 100% Pure’s Vanilla Bean Shower Gel smells just like the real thing. It’s true vanilla bean through and through, supplemented by mineral-rich red algae and green tea for an impressive lather. Heavenly and hydrating. No matter your skin type, you’ll feel refreshed and soothed with this body gel.

Kate’s Review | “100% pure’s body wash is reminiscent of Bath & Body Works — the scent and aesthetic is nostalgic, but the ingredients are a serious upgrade. Safe, soothing, and budget-friendly.  If you’re looking to feel like a teenage dream without the toxic burden, 100% pure is 100% perfection.”

8. Puracy

Developed by Ph.D. chemists, this bottle will last you nearly two months with everyday use, and you’ll be left with smooth, supple skin. With more than 8,000 reviews, it’s beloved and beneficial to everyone, including babies and pets.

Kate’s Review | Puracy’s body wash is simple and effective at an accessible price point. Plus, they boast a tear-free formula fit for small children and pets, which is comforting to me as a mother of two. A little goes a long way, which means the bottle lasts, re-purchasing is less frequent, and shipping emissions are lower. A wonderful option all around.”

9. Alaffia

Best For | Dry skin
Natural Ingredients | Neem extract, shea butter, coconut oil, lavender oil
Price Range | $11–$18

Calm your mind — and your skin — with Alaffia’s Shea Body Wash. Ethically made via West African women’s co-ops, this body wash blends unrefined shea butter, virgin coconut oil, neem extract, and lavender to heal and nourish your skin, no matter how dry it is. It packed an aromatic punch when we used it, and was equal parts smooth and silky, which also provided much-needed hydration to our dry skin in a desert climate. Know that your dollars will support women, Fair Trade practices, and eco-friendly packaging, and you’ll get a long-lasting and effective body wash!

Kate’s Review | “I love this wash for my kids in particular — I’m not nervous if the bottle falls in the bath or if they decide to pour a little too much in the tub. The value is fantastic, and the gentle formula is easy on even my two-year-old’s delicate, eczema-prone skin. The cherry on top is being able to purchase it at our local grocery store, making the company’s accessibility just as wonderful as their impact.”

10. Dr. Bronner’s

Budget friendly
Cruelty free
Fair trade
Subscriptions available
USDA organic
Vegan

Best For | Multi-purpose use
Natural Ingredients | Organic coconut oil, organic olive oil, organic fair deal hemp oil, organic jojoba oil
Price Range | $4–$65

Looking for something versatile? What about an 18-in-1 Pure-Castile soap from Dr. Bronner’s? Made with organic ingredients like hemp seed oil, coconut oil, and jojoba oils, your skin will soak in the highest quality ingredients around. It’s safe to use even on sensitive skin, provided one follows the ratio requirements. Plus, this organic and certified Fair Trade soap can be used on your hands, face, body, and even around your home. Talk about multitasking. Best of all, we were surprised by the bottle’s size (a whopping 32 oz. bottle for $17) so you truly get your bang for your buck. And a little goes a long way. If you prefer body washes that are subtly scented and easy to glide on, this one may be a winner.

Kate’s Review | “Our family used to use Dr. Bronner’s Baby Unscented 18-in-1 as our daily cleanser. I couldn’t quite figure out the ratio to use it as a body wash without it irritating my sensitive skin, and eventually when kids came along, I couldn’t trust myself to complete the extra step to dilute the solution. However, it is a fantastic staple item to keep in the house, and we still use it regularly for many other purposes! If you’re someone who appreciates its versatility and the simplicity that it provides, and has the wherewithal to follow instructions, I highly recommend it.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

I’ve personally tested the best natural and organic shampoos and conditioners on the market — these are my top 12 picks with clean, organic ingredients.

One of my best friends in middle school had gorgeous, straight, shiny hair. I remember envying her. Mine was textured, wavy, voluminous, and reacted to every bit of humidity. All things I’ve learned to love now, but when I was 12, I thought I had a shampoo problem. I insisted on switching to the $3 Suave shampoo my friend used, thinking that would change my texture.

Much to my chagrin, my hair didn’t get any straighter. And when I insisted my babysitter straighten my hair with a clothing iron, my mom was seriously unhappy. I had to learn to accept the texture and shape of my own hair.

“These days, I’m not straightening or scrunching my hair anymore; I am embracing my natural texture.”

In high school, I found a new hair idol — a girl with waves who religiously “scrunched” her hair. I followed her lead: Sleep with my hair in a messy bun, take it out in the morning, flip my head over, and spray loads of Aussie Sprunch Spray in my hair while crunching it with my hands to create gelled waves for school. A style that actually worked with my natural texture. And I remember people started giving me compliments. They liked my natural waves — and over time, I did too.

These days, I’m not straightening or scrunching my hair anymore; I am embracing my natural texture. I like to wear my hair product-free, so what I’m really focused on is shampoo and conditioner that don’t weigh my hair down and actually hydrate my waves.

“I like to wear my hair product-free, so what I’m really focused on is shampoo and conditioner that don’t weigh my hair down and actually hydrate my waves.”

I live in a dry climate now, so my hair doesn’t get as frizzy as it did growing up on the East Coast. But I’m still thinking about protecting it with nourishing ingredients — not stripping or drying it with harsh chemicals. Before this guide, I’d been religiously using Nécessaire’s shampoo, which I’ve ranked in the guide below (and still love). But I hadn’t expanded my shampoo horizons in a while, so when it came time to test these brands, I was excited to see what else was out there.

Our criteria and methodology:

Over the last month, I’ve tested 11 shampoo brands — and called in a guest tester from our team, Silsila, to review one of the brands designed for hair that’s more textured than mine, so you could get the best firsthand perspective.

My process was simple: Wash my hair, let it air dry, document how it affected my texture and waves, and then live with it for a few days. I also paid special attention to scent — I’ve grown to prefer unscented products over strong perfumes and synthetic fragrances, so I’ve noted the intensity of scent and whether it lingered in the guide below.

And I considered how the products foam. Most shampoos and soaps foam because of SLS — a harsh chemical foaming agent. We associate foam with efficacy, but it really doesn’t have much to do with how clean our hair gets. We’ve made sure all the products in this guide are SLS-free — but clean products have come so far. I was surprised that a lot of these lathered beautifully, giving that satisfying wash feel!

Beyond clean ingredients, I’m looking for hydration, bounce, shine, and minimal frizz. So here’s how these 12 brands stacked up.

The criteria for our selections fall into the below categories, and we regularly update this list with emerging favorites.

My team and I tested 12 nontoxic shampoo brands, noting our firsthand experience, scent, and efficacy of each.
  • NATURAL/ORGANIC | Each shampoo is free of sodium lauryl sulfate and other harsh ingredients, many with certifications to back them up like B-Corp or EWG verified.
  • EFFICACY | I personally tested each product for efficacy, and you’ll find more details about exactly how each one left my hair feeling.
  • AFFORDABLE | Cost is a number-one factor for a lot of folks, so we’ve included a range of price points here. They go for over $4 per ounce at the high end to a little over $1 per ounce at the low end.
  • SCENT | I’m a sucker for a good scent! I’ve described the scent of each shampoo below, and noted which ones might be a bit too strong for folks who are sensitive to smell. We’ve only chosen brands that can ensure their fragrance compositions are also nontoxic.

A Good Trade fave, Ursa Major is a B-Corp based in Vermont that specializes in no-frills skincare. They have a tight lineup of bodycare products, too, including deodorant, soap, shampoo, and conditioner. The brand calls its products, infused with natural ingredients, “super refreshing,” and “wildly effective.” They’re super transparent about sustainability, too — they’re certified plastic negative, they use FSC-certified paper for most of their secondary packaging, and they produce 90% of their cartons at a carbon neutral facility.

Grace’s Review | True to its name, this shampoo and conditioner duo is perfect if you’re someone who washes your hair daily – I do, especially when I’m working out a lot. The products have a bright, woodsy scent that smells fresh in the shower but doesn’t linger like a heavy perfume. The shampoo washes without stripping or dehydrating your hair, and the conditioner provides just the right amount of light moisture. My hair air-dried quickly and didn’t feel weighed down. I’ve found myself reaching for this product the most – it’s truly such an easy option!

Nécessaire is known for their simple, effective formulations focusing on body care, their commitment to sustainability (they’re a B Corp), and their utterly chic branding. They rose to prominence with products like fragrance-free body lotion and body wash, and can now be found in Sephoras nationwide. But when they do fragrance, it’s elevated, spa-like, and plant-derived. Their flagship shampoo is unscented and has the National Eczema Association seal of approval. Nécessaire is even certified Climate Neutral, and they’re a member of 1% for the Planet.

Grace’s Review | Even before this review, I’d repurchased Nécessaire’s Scalp Duo 10 times. This light, hydrating, everyday shampoo and conditioner is powered by hyaluronic acid to moisturize your hair and soothe a dry, sensitive scalp. Their ApiScalp™ technology also calms itchiness and irritation. I’m not even someone who considers myself a dry scalp person — but with this shampoo, I’ve never had to deal with it, even living in a dry climate. It’s also fragrance-free, dermatologist-tested, hypoallergenic, and non-comedogenic — truly the gentlest everyday product. After an air dry, my hair always feels clean, smooth and weightless. Only after looking at all my air dry photos side by side, did I notice that the Nécessaire Duo left my hair a little more frizzy than some of the other brands… noted!

3. Sienna Naturals

American made
BIPOC Owned
Cruelty free

Vegan
Woman owned

Best For | Textured hair
Natural & Organic Ingredients | Aloe leaf juice, coconut oil, baobab oil; phenoxyethanol-free, sulfate-free, silicone-free, paraben-free
EWG Rating | 2
Fragrance Free Options | No; fragrance from natural essential oils
Organic Certification | No
Product Range | H.A.P.I Shampoo & H.A.P.I. Conditioner
Price Range* | $28 for shampoo, $32 for conditioner (discounted subscriptions available); $2.80–$3.20/ounce

Plant-based and dermatologist-approved hair care brand Sienna Naturals addresses growing concerns about harsh chemicals in many textured haircare lines. Founders Hanna Diop and Issa Rae created the collection with scalp health at the forefront, formulating products that are pH-balanced, non-irritating, and non-sensitizing. The Moisture-Rich Cleansing shampoo wins award after award, including a Byrdie 2022 Eco Award and a Cosmopolitan 2023 Holy Grail Beauty Award. The brand’s matching Untangled Conditioner helps with hydration and easy detangling.

Silsila’s Review | Both the Sienna Naturals H.A.P.I. Shampoo and H.A.P.I. Untangled Conditioner have won multiple awards, and for good reason. The shampoo is designed to deeply cleanse the hair and scalp, removing product buildup without stripping away moisture, while the conditioner detangles, strengthens, and supports healthy hair growth — basically, everything that textured hair needs. Naturally, I was excited to test them on my dry scalp and curly, tangle-prone hair.

After two washes, both products truly lived up to the hype. The shampoo has a creamy texture and creates a silky, gentle lather, with an earthy lavender scent that feels both comforting and refreshing. I was genuinely surprised by how soft and moisturized my hair felt after rinsing — most deep-cleansing shampoos leave my strands dry, but this one didn’t. The conditioner features an earthy floral scent, subtly reminiscent of honey, and a medium-thick texture. A little went a long way, providing just the right amount of slip to detangle with either my fingers or a brush. Once air-dried, my scalp felt calm and flake-free, and my curls looked shiny, soft, and refreshed. I even received compliments on how defined and voluminous my hair looked! While on the pricier side, for how little you need for the product’s effectiveness, this duo is well worth it.

4. Roz

Cruelty free
Eco friendly packaging
Gives back
Vegan
Woman owned

Best For | Salon quality
Natural & Organic Ingredients | Coconut-based surfactants, ceramides, transparent fragrance formulation; silicone-free, SLS-free, paraben-free
EWG Rating  | 2-5 (Roz products range – but Shampoo & Conditioner Duo not listed)
Fragrance Free Options | No
Organic Certification | No
Product Range | The Foundation Shampoo & Conditioner Duo
Price Range* | $81 for bundle; $4/ounce

Founded by celebrity hair stylist Mara Roszak, Roz delivers high-end, salon-grade formulations made simple. They create basic, clean formulations all about performing at a professional level while reducing impact on the environment, and use sustainable packaging made of glass or aluminum. Each product is vegan and cruelty free. And while fragrance is notoriously one of the ingredients you should avoid when product shopping, since brands are allowed to protect their formulas and not disclose fragrance ingredients, Roz believes in radical fragrance transparency. Their signature shampoo scent, a blend of bergamot, fig, vetiver, and neroli, is free of PEGs, nitromusks, and phthalates, and is fully International Fragrance Association-compliant. Their hydrating, salon-grade shampoo is also formulated with their BotaniComplex along with coconut-based surfactants and ceramides.

Grace’s Review | It seems like all of a sudden, all the coolest girls I know have Roz in their shower. Developed by a celebrity hairdresser with over 20 years in the industry, The Foundation Duo feels and smells truly luxurious — with a strong, salon-style lather without SLS. The shampoo is designed to hydrate and remove buildup to create the perfect base for styling. It’s also packed with ceramides and pea peptides to strengthen your hair and protect it from damage. After washing with it, my brush glides through completely tangle-free.

My one complaint: The scent is quite strong and perfumed, and it lingers. It actually smells like you put on perfume for the rest of the day after washing your hair. Some people love this — and the scent is beautiful — but strong scents just aren’t for me.

Natural & Organic Ingredients | Guava leaf extract, guava fruit extract, aloe vera leaf powder; sulfate-free, silicone-free, paraben-free
EWG Rating  | 4
Fragrance Free Options | No
Organic Certification | No
Product Range | Guava Protect & Repair Wash Duo
Price Range* | $52 for bundle (discounted subscriptions available); $3.10/ounce

“Growing up as a Latin American immigrant in a homogenous country like Sweden, I never found myself represented in mainstream media and the products I consumed,” says Ceremonia founder Babba Riviera, so she set out to make a hair care brand that focuses on Latinx heritage. They source ingredients from Central and South America, and the brand offers three different shampoo/conditioner sets for different hair types — one for thick and dry hair, one for fine and thin hair, and one for damage repair and color protection. All products come in beautifully chic packaging with pumps.

Grace’s Review | Ceremonia’s Guava Shampoo smelled fresh, fruity, and nostalgic — the scent wasn’t overpowering, and reminded me of a childhood shampoo in the best way. It left my hair smooth, hydrated, healthy, and bouncy. This reparative shampoo and conditioner is specifically developed for damaged hair, and while you’d need to test it over time to see long-term results, I love that it’s designed to repair and protect from damage and color fade. I don’t dye my hair, but if you do, this duo is designed to revitalize your locks after color treatment. It’s also a great option for summer — protecting your hair from chlorine, salt water, and UV exposure.

The company is Green Business Certified and offers skincare, body care, and makeup products, too.

Grace’s Review | 100% Pure gave me one of my best air-dries — the right amount of weight and bounce to leave my hair textured and wavy, but not too big or voluminous. I didn’t feel like I needed to do any additional styling. It has a light cherry scent that smells a tiny bit artificial, but doesn’t linger long.

The conditioner is deeply moisturizing and made with aloe vera, rose hydrosol, cucumber, argan oil, and seaweed collagen to lock in moisture and restore bounce and shine. This sulfate-free shampoo is also safe for color-treated hair – so it’s a great option if you frequently dye it.

Price Range* | $82 for bundle (discounted subscriptions available); $4.77/ounce

Created by a dermatologist, SEEN targets their products to folks with sensitive or acne-prone skin, treating hair care like part of your skincare. They carry two shampoos — one with scent and one without (the latter being backed by the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance) — both of which were clinically proven to be non-comedogenic. In a study, 70% of participants with acne saw an improvement in body acne and 52% saw a reduction of face acne, while 93% of participants with flaky scalps saw improvement. Combine those stats with a formulation that’s designed to reduce frizz and deeply clean without stripping, and you’re left with both healthier hair and skin.

Grace’s Review | Seen makes a dermatologist-designed, fragrance-free shampoo and conditioner for sensitive skin. A little product goes a long way for a strong lather and clean hair. This gentle, sulfate-free shampoo rinses easily without leaving my hair or scalp feeling stripped. The lightweight conditioner helped detangle and soften my hair while reducing frizz and breakage.

I have normal hair, so this worked perfectly for me — but if you have dry or damaged hair, you might want to try their Deeper Conditioner instead. It’s also safe for sensitive, acne-prone, eczema-prone, and psoriasis-prone skin.

New Zealand-based B-Corp Ethique is revolutionizing the haircare space with a full lineup of plastic-free bar shampoos and conditioners, and their sustainability initiatives don’t stop there — they plant a tree for every online order, and they donate 2% of their sales to charity. They offer shampoo bars for all sorts of concerns, from frizz to oil to curls, and they carry some face and body products, too, like deodorant, body wash, moisturizers, and lip balm.

Grace’s Review | I didn’t know what to expect from these fun blue shampoo bars, but I was pleasantly surprised. Ethique’s Hydration Bars are described as “eight glasses of water for your hair” — and they really delivered. Each one of my curls felt individually moisturized and defined. These bars lathered the least compared to the other products, but still left my hair evenly waved with a nice beachy texture. They come in completely recyclable, plastic-free packaging — and I love that they have mini options for travel. Definitely the most sustainable option overall.

Fun fact from their website: One bar lasts as long as three bottles of liquid shampoo.

What are the benefits of nontoxic shampoos and conditioners?

Nontoxic shampoos and conditioners are great because they leave out harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens, and synthetic fragrances, making them gentle on your scalp and hair (while reducing the risk of irritation or allergic reactions). They’re often packed with natural, nourishing ingredients like plant-based oils, botanical extracts, and vitamins that help strengthen and hydrate your hair, leaving it softer, shinier, and healthier over time. Plus, they’re eco-friendly, often coming in biodegradable packaging and made without harmful toxins that can negatively impact the environment. Many nontoxic formulas are also cruelty-free, so you can feel good knowing your hair care routine aligns with ethical and sustainable values.

What ingredients should you avoid in your haircare?

Our editors are big fans of shampoos that are free of harmful sulfates — sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), to be precise. These harsh surfactants can strip color from color-treated hair, along with your hair’s natural moisture, leaving it drier and more prone to breakage. Sulfates also have the potential to disrupt our hormones, too. We also like to avoid parabens and endocrine-disrupting phthalates, which none of the products on this list have.

It can tough to decipher which ingredients in our haircare brands we should avoid, especially when their are so many options to choose from. Lindsay Dahl, an environmental health advocate, policy leader, and author of Cleaning House alerts us that we need to all put in effort to to shop safely. “Brands should be actively testing their own products for relevant chemicals and contaminants, which is not happening enough…Certain PFAS, heavy metals, pesticides, phhthalaes, formaldehyde and parabens can easily show up at contaminant levels in, yes, even clean products.” While certifications are imperfect for independent ingredient checking, Lindsay states, “Clearya and EWG Skin Deep are two strongest, science-based apps that assess product and chemical safety.”

“Brands should be actively testing their own products for relevant chemicals and contaminants, which is not happening enough…Certain PFAS, heavy metals, pesticides, phhthalaes, formaldehyde and parabens can easily show up at contaminant levels in, yes, even clean products.”

-Lindsay Dahl

These ingredient testing sites and apps help us understand which shampoos and conditioners are nontoxic and safe for our skin and hair. EWG-verified’s list of hair care products is a great place to learn which brands meet EWG’s gold standard of transparent, tested, and safe ingredients and the Clearya app and browser extension will notify you of toxic ingredients as you shop.

ecogolik‘s ingredient’s checker is also a great resource to reveal if your haircare product is free from parabens, sulfates, alcohol, silicones, allergens, and more.

In general, we like to look for formulations with simple, natural ingredients and no synthetic fragrances. A brand’s ethos and sustainability practices are incredibly important to us, too, which is why you’ll find B-Corps throughout this list, along with brands that are plastic-free or even certified climate-neutral.

How to choose the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair:

Choosing the right shampoo and conditioner comes down to understanding your hair type and its specific needs. If you have dry or damaged hair, look for hydrating formulas with ingredients like argan oil or shea butter to restore moisture and strengthen strands. For oily hair, a lightweight, clarifying shampoo with tea tree oil or charcoal can help balance excess oil without stripping your scalp. Curly, textured, or dyed hair thrives with sulfate-free, deeply nourishing formulas that enhance definition, fight frizz, and keep your locks vibrant. And if you have a sensitive scalp, a gentle, fragrance-free option with soothing ingredients like aloe vera or chamomile is a great choice. Ultimately, picking the right shampoo and conditioner is all about listening to your hair and giving it the care it needs!

Are organic haircare products worth the price?

Organic haircare products can be worth the price — especially if you’re someone who values ingredient transparency and scalp health. While they might cost a bit more upfront, organic shampoos, conditioners, and treatments often skip the harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens, and synthetic fragrances that can dry out your hair or irritate sensitive skin. Instead, they’re packed with nourishing plant-based oils, extracts, and gentle cleansers that work with your hair’s natural biology. Many people find that over time, their hair becomes more balanced, shiny, and easier to manage. So if you’re looking to simplify your routine and minimize exposure to questionable ingredients, investing in organic haircare can definitely be worth it.

In addition to the long-term benefits for your hair and scalp, there’s also a “less is more” mindset with many organic formulations. Because the ingredients tend to be concentrated and free from unnecessary fillers, you might find that you need less product per use — which means it can last longer than conventional options. (Shampoo bars are a great example of this!) And if you’ve struggled with scalp sensitivity, flaking, or buildup from synthetic ingredients, switching to organic might be a game changer. There’s peace of mind in knowing what’s going onto your body is as safe and nourishing as possible.

Is organic haircare better for the environment?

Organic haircare is generally better for the environment. These products are often made with sustainably sourced ingredients, biodegradable formulas, and eco-conscious packaging, which means less pollution and waste throughout the product’s life cycle. What sets organic brands apart is their commitment to sustainability throughout the supply chain. From farming without synthetic pesticides to using recyclable or refillable packaging, many of the companies producing organic haircare are mindful of their environmental impact. Some even partner with carbon offset programs or regenerative farming initiatives that help rebuild healthy soil and capture atmospheric carbon.

Plus, avoiding synthetic chemicals reduces the risk of toxic runoff entering waterways during rinsing, which helps protect aquatic ecosystems. Many organic brands also prioritize cruelty-free practices and work with ethical farms or cooperatives to support a more regenerative approach to agriculture. While not all organic brands are created equal, supporting those that are truly invested in sustainability can amplify the positive effects of your purchase far beyond your bathroom shelf!

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

Our editors have personally tried the top organic, natural, and nontoxic bath salts and soaks — these are our favorites for ultimate relaxation.

After a long day, a warm bath filled with bubbles, aromatic scents, and fizzing salts can help relieve sore, aching bodies and quiet tired minds. It’s one of the most grounding rituals you can give yourself — the warmth, minerals, and calming aromas help your body unwind, slow your breathing, and prepare you for deeper, more restful sleep. In many ways, it’s the simplest way to turn your own tub into a cozy at-home spa, no appointment required.

For your next self-care spa day, enjoy these bath soaks and salts, often made in small batches with natural, sustainable, and organic ingredients. A good soak isn’t just relaxing; it can support muscle recovery, soothe the skin, and create a moment of calm in a busy day. Even better, many of these blends come in eco-friendly packaging, use locally sourced ingredients, and support small makers. A good soak never felt so good. 🫧

What are bath soaks made from?

Nontoxic bath soaks are typically made from simple, skin-loving ingredients you might already recognize from nature. The base is often mineral-rich salts like Epsom salt or sea salt, which help relax tired muscles thanks to the natural occurring magnesium, and soften the skin while you soak. Many blends also include nourishing extras like baking soda to gently calm skin irritation, or creamy plant-based powders such as coconut milk or finely ground oatmeal that leave your bathwater feeling silky and nourishing.

To make the experience even more blissful, nontoxic bath soaks are usually infused with dried botanicals and pure essential oils. Think calming lavender buds, delicate rose petals, chamomile flowers, or refreshing eucalyptus swirling around your tub like a mini garden spa. Instead of synthetic fragrances, artificial dyes, or mystery additives, these blends keep things beautifully simple — transforming an ordinary bath into a cozy, relaxing ritual your body (and senses) will happily sink into. 🛁

Our criteria:

Our team has used, researched, and corresponded with the top clean beauty and skincare brands for years. Together we’ve chosen our favorite natural bath soaks and salts that are nontoxic, made with organic ingredients, and leave you feeling oh-so-relaxed. The post I Tested The Top Clean And Organic Makeup Brands In 2026 appeared first on The Good Trade.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

I tested and researched dozens of clean makeup brands — these are my top picks that are nontoxic and organic for a natural look.

As someone who’s been working from home for almost eight years, getting ready in the morning has become a thing of the past. I’m most productive in the AM, so most days I wake up, let my dog out, brush my teeth, make tea, and dive straight into work. This means I’m usually frantically throwing on a semi-professional top, splashing water on my face, and swiping on mascara in the last two minutes before morning Zoom calls.

When I had to go into the office — years ago now — I would actually get ready. I’d honor myself and prepare for the day with a full skincare routine, light makeup, blown-out hair, and a real outfit. But working from home made me abandon this ritual altogether. After all, who wants a full face of makeup at home?

“Each day, I woke up, washed my face, blew out my bangs, put on a cute outfit, and applied makeup for my experiment.”

But, over the last 15 days, as I’ve been testing the makeup brands below, it’s had me getting ready in the morning again. Each day, I woke up, washed my face, blew out my bangs, put on a cute outfit, and applied makeup for my experiment.

And what I’ve found is twofold: First, most of these products are light, natural, and totally acceptable for everyday use — not the heavy, full-glam formulas I was avoiding. And second, what a confidence boost it is to get ready in the morning and show up to my calls — or even just run errands and hit the coffee shop — feeling like a slightly enhanced version of myself.

This product guide hasn’t just led me to my new favorite products. It reminded me that the everyday ritual of getting ready is worth it. And I’ll be continuing long after this project is over. ✨

To test these 11 makeup brands, I gave each one a dedicated day. Each morning before work, I’d wash and moisturize my face, take a “before” picture of my clean skin, and then apply the makeup. I’d note how the application felt, take an “after” photo of the final look, and then go about my day — work, Pilates, errands, dance class, even travel days to Arizona and Colorado, and a big night out for a birthday dinner. Testing over 11 days was interesting because my skin looked different each day — depending on where I was in my cycle, how dry or hydrated I felt, and whether I had any blemishes.

At the end of the day, I’d take a picture of how the makeup held up — or didn’t. Some photos were taken in natural light – but some days were long and my end-of-day shot didn’t happen until 10 p.m. Safe to say, my testing process was rigorous and authentic.

On days when I wasn’t testing a specific brand, I was still using the products. As I found my favorites, I naturally wanted to mix and match from different companies — and eventually found my new stack of everyday products. It was actually hard to stay true to the brand-specific days because once I found something I liked, I was so excited that I wanted to start using it immediately. Still, I stayed disciplined. Below, you’ll get before/after/end-of-day and product shots for each brand — and as a bonus, my new everyday makeup routine mixing and matching by brand, with a little application tutorial for inspiration.

We regularly update this list with new favorites that meet our criteria:

  • CLEAN/ORGANIC | These makeup brands are formulated with nontoxic and organic ingredients that are safe for even the most delicate areas of our face.
  • PERFORMANCE | The brands on this list offer everything from natural “no makeup makeup” looks to highly pigmented products that you could use for a night out — and all of them wear well for hours.
  • AFFORDABLE | This list includes clean makeup brands that are not only effective, but also easy on your wallet.

My daily staples after testing:

As I went through the testing process, I naturally found my favorites from each brand. There are truly SO many great products, but here’s the clean makeup routine I’m reaching for right now:

These are my everyday favorites for a full, clean makeup look after weeks of testing.

Grace’s Review | “I discovered the Great Skin Serum over the summer — and it changed my makeup game forever. This hydrating serum leaves a dewy finish and acts as the ideal priming layer for makeup. I’ve already repurchased it multiple times. Besides that, I’d never used any of Merit’s makeup — but I was so pleasantly surprised. A new overall favorite! The Perfecting Complexion Stick was a great color and coverage match for my skin, and I could easily apply it by swiping the stick on any areas that needed it and blending with my fingers. The highlighter was beautiful, shimmery, and easy to blend. The Flush Balm was a great color and ideal blush to brighten up my complexion. Grace’s Review | “Saie makeup has been in my daily rotation since they launched! I’m a big fan of Laney, the founder — she was one of the first clean beauty bloggers, and her products are the result of years of research and personal testing. It shows! Their mascara has been my natural everyday go-to and it’s easy to remove with regular face wash. Their iconic Glowy Super Gel is hydrating and leaves a “glazed donut” effect on your skin. The concealer is creamy and hydrated, and their Dew Blush is easy to blend and layer with your fingers. I tried their SuperSuede blush and it didn’t disappoint — boldly pigmented and stayed all day. I have five shades of their gloss and carry it in all my bags. It’s non-sticky and hydrating. They also just launched their setting spray, which I tested. It’s early to tell, but it seemed to help everything stay put a little longer.”

Grace’s Review | “Ilia’s products felt the most classic “makeup” of the bunch. I love their full range of products and options for powders or creams depending on your preference. A lot of their products are multi-use, which gives them more bang for your buck. Their cheek and lip multi-stick is now a part of my daily routine for a quick and easy makeup look, and their Skin Rewind Complexion Foundation Stick is great for all over coverage or just for specific spots like a concealer. Their Soft Focus Blurring Blush stayed all day, their glosses were dewy and pigmented, and their mascara was super lengthening with serious staying power. A team favorite brand.”

We especially love the dimensional colors you can achieve with their baked blush and the inclusive shades of their skin improving foundation.

Grace’s Review | “The day I did a full Kosas look, I had just picked at some blemishes — so I had more covering up to do than usual. Kosas concealer did not disappoint with its natural, high-coverage, creamy finish. Their baked blush added flattering, glam life to my cheeks, and their bronzer left my forehead sun-kissed. I’ve repurchased their clear brow gel at least 10 times — it’s been my go-to for years. Their mascara was great for layering and had serious staying power. Grace’s Review | “Well People has been on my radar since I saw them at Whole Foods in the early 2010s, and I’m so impressed with how their product line has expanded over time. When I sent my Well People before-and-after to a friend, she thought I’d put a filter on! Their Complexion Stick and new Serum Foundation melted into my skin and left a hydrated, non-makeup-y finish. Then I layered on their multi-use blush to add color to my cheeks and finished with the super glossy, hydrating Peptide Lip Balm — a new everyday staple. And their Expressionist Curling Mascara? I found myself reaching for it to complete the look on days when I was testing brands that didn’t have mascara. At the end of the day, the mascara was intact and my cheeks still had a rosy glow.”

For this testing round, I wanted to try some new products. I opted for the Revitalize Hydra Concealer, which had excellent coverage and a perfect shade match for my skin. Their ReDimension Hydra Powder Blush was pigmented, shimmery, and beautiful, and I loved their Volumizing Peptide Mascara for long, full lashes that stayed all day. Their lip oil was glossy but required a few applications to reach my desired shine. RMS is a cult favorite for a reason.”

Best For | Miracle balm, brows
Clean Ingredients | Clean, safe ingredients without parabens, phthalates, sulfates, petrolatum, PEGs, cyclic silicones, EDTA, or BPA
EWG Rating  | 1-5
Fragrance Free Options | Yes
Product Range | Miracle Balm, Face Pencil, What The Foundation, Lip & Cheek Stain, Shimmer Face Oil, The Brow Pencil, The Brow Gel
Price Range | $24 (lip pencil) – $46 (foundation)

Makeup pioneer Bobbi Brown created Jones Road just four years after leaving her namesake company. “Why can’t I find makeup products that are both clean and high-performance- that don’t sacrifice one for the other?” she asked. Jones Road seeks to fill that gap in the market, with easy, multi-purpose products that can be used to achieve any look — from a natural, no-makeup look to a high-drama, ultra-glam one. Using even stricter guidelines than the E.U.’s, the carefully curated range of balms, sticks, and creams are the best of the best in high-impact clean beauty. You can read our full Jones Road review here.

Grace’s Review | “Jones Road products feel equal parts high-end and fit for everyday wear. I usually opt for spot concealing over foundation, but their “What The Foundation” was blendable and natural-looking — it didn’t look like I was wearing heavy makeup. Making sure your face is well-hydrated before applying makes the finish even better. I used their iconic Miracle Balm as blush and highlighter for a dewy finish. I also loved their Face Pencil for spot concealing — I started carrying it in my purse. Their brow gel and brow pencil became everyday staples, and I reached for them on days when I was testing brands that didn’t include brow products.”

Clean Ingredients | Naturally pigmented, nontoxic ingredients
EWG Rating  | 1-3

Product Range | 2nd Skin Concealer, Gemmed Luminizer, Cherry Lip & Cheek Stain, Blush, Long Last Brows, Cocoa Pigmented Bronzer, Maracuja Mascara
Price Range | $12 (lip balm) – $77 (eye palette)

100% Pure aims to create the world’s purest line of all-natural cosmetics, beauty products, and skincare. The brand’s vegan cosmetics are formulated with high-performing antioxidants, naturally occurring vitamins, and essential oils to give your skin maximum benefits. The brand even offers soaps, shampoos, and conditioners to complete your (nontoxic) beauty routine! Affordable, safe, and stunning.

Grace’s Review | “100% Pure’s products leave you with a rich, glowy look. You only need a tiny bit of the Cherry Lip & Cheek stain — I squeezed out a pea-sized amount and it was way too much. It has a nostalgic scent, like the ChapStick from my teenage years. The powders left an icy, shimmery finish that instantly woke up my face, and their concealer had serious coverage. Their mascara elongated and separated my eyelashes. I wore this makeup for a long travel day, and fared pretty well! My one complaint: All of these products come shrink-wrapped in plastic, which didn’t feel sustainable and was a pain to remove.”

Product Range | 3-in-1 Balmie Crayon Super Fan Pack, Color Cream Multi-Stick, Tinted Dew Multi-Stick, Mushroom Foundation
Price Range | $16 (lip balm) – $42 (mushroom foundation)

For makeup that’s as fun as it is Earth-friendly, Axiology does it best. The Oregon-based brand makes creamy and colorful multi-use balms, lipsticks, and even mushroom foundation, doing so using minimal ingredients, consisting of clean oils, extracts, waxes, and butters. The entire collection is vegan, palm oil-free, and comes in boxes made by women in Bali from paper waste collected on the island.

Grace’s Review | “I’m impressed with Axiology. I was skeptical of these colored crayons compared to the other products I was testing — but the strong pigments and stay power surprised me. I started with the Mushroom Foundation, using my finger to dab a little on spots that needed concealing (a little goes a long way). Then I used the Color Cream Multi Stick for blush and lips, and shades from the crayon super pack to add contour, highlight, and eyeshadow. I finished with Well People’s mascara and a little lip gloss. By the end of the day, my cheeks still looked rosy and blemishes were covered.”

Product Range | Uprise Mascara, Complexion Multi-Stick, Illuminating Primer Stick, Harmony Lip Gloss, Courage Cream Lip & Cheek
Price Range | $12 (eyeshadow pencil) – $56 (face palette)

Cheekbone Beauty got its start when founder Jenn Harper was inspired to create a makeup brand that centered Indigenous Youth, in a space where Indigenous faces are not represented nearly enough. With strong values and the backing of an Indigenous investment firm, Cheekbone Beauty’s mission is to provide sustainable, high-quality, and cruelty-free cosmetics that are more than just beauty products – they are a symbol of hope and success for people from marginalized communities. Cheekbone Beauty gives back to organizations that support Indigenous communities including the First Nations Child & Family Caring Society and their own Cheekbone Beauty Scholarship Fund Program.

Grace’s Review | “Cheekbone carries all the essentials. I especially loved their illuminating primer stick — I used it on the tops of my cheekbones, eyelids, and under my eyebrows for some serious glow. Their lip & cheek product was creamy, hydrating, and buildable with easy application. I was traveling this day and took a short nap, and you’ll notice the mascara had less staying power than some of the other brands.”

11. NOTO

Cruelty free
Eco friendly packaging
Fair trade
Gender inclusive
Gives back
Recycled materials
Small business
Vegan
Woman owned

Best For | Multi-use sticks, cream-based products
Clean Ingredients | Organic & botanical ingredients
EWG Rating  | 1-2
Fragrance Free Options | Yes
Product Range | Multi-Bene Stick for Lip & Cheek, The Contour Kit (Highlighter + Bronzer Duo), Glassa Balm
Price Range | $26 (multi-use sticks)

Based in Los Angeles, NOTO’s gender-fluid makeup was developed with minimalists in mind. From its pigmented lip & cheek stains to its highlighter for the face & body, the collection is vegan, crafted in small batches, and made from organic plant-based ingredients (like olive fruit oil and rosemary leaf extract). Its bottles are made of glass, the plastics of PCR material, and the boxes are biodegradable. If you’re in LA, NOTO offers a refill program so you can replenish your emptied bottles.

Grace’s Review | “NOTO is packing some serious pigment. Their collection is small, so at first I wasn’t sure if these sticks would be enough to create a full makeup look — but I was surprised by how far a little color goes to add glow and life to my face. They don’t carry mascara, so I added a light swipe of Cheekbone to complete the look for my before and afters. I used their contour kit to add dimension to my cheekbones and make my forehead and nose look a little sun-kissed. The Multi-Bene stick was perfect for cheeks and lips. Lastly, I love the minty fresh feel of the Glassa Balm — it’s super hydrating and leaves your lips glossy but not sticky.”

What are the benefits of switching to clean makeup?

Unfortunately, for decades, makeup has been plagued with toxic chemicals that can have serious implications on our health. Ingredients like PFAS, formaldehyde, parabens, and SLS are prevalent across many of our beloved makeup products and can absorb through our skin causing adverse reactions like allergies, eye injuries, or worse.

Fortunately, many clean makeup brands are leading the way of crafting effective and safe makeup products that won’t harm your health. (And actually perform well, if not better than your conventional makeup go-tos!) Clean makeup brands avoid the use of harmful chemicals and instead formulate their cosmetics with clean and organic ingredients like fruit and vegetable pigments, aloe vera, and cornstarch which are gentler and safer for our skin. Clean makeup brands also prioritize animal welfare and environmental initiatives as many are vegan, cruelty-free, and use sustainable packaging that minimizes harm to animals, the planet, and us!

What should you look for in a clean makeup brand?

So what ingredients should you be looking for and avoiding when it comes to makeup brands? It’s best to prioritize makeup products with transparent, safe ingredients and certifications from reputable sources. It can be overwhelming trying to figure out which ingredients are safe and which are not, which is why we recommend checking out Perelel’s Unclean15 list which reveals the most harmful substances found in cosmetics. You can also cross-reference makeup products you own or are interested in through INCIDecoder, which allows you to snap a photo or copy and paste the ingredients of a product to help you understand the purpose and safety of each ingredient. We also love using CosDNA for analyzing a products ingredients to find out its comedogenic, irritant, and safety level, and CosIng, an online tool made by the European commission, which distinguishes ingredients from substances (typically toxins) in cosmetics. Lastly, The Beauty Brains podcast is a great resource where scientists educate us on the latest hot topics in the cosmetic industry.

Some of the key ingredients you should avoid include the following:

  • BHA/BHT: BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole) and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) are synthetic preservatives commonly used to extend the shelf life of cosmetics by preventing oxidation. These should be avoided as they can cause hormone disruption, skin irritation, and may have carcinogenic properties.
  • Parabens & Phthalates: Ingredients like methylparaben and propylparaben have the potential to disrupt hormones. Phthalates are commonly hidden in “fragrance” labels and can act as endocrine disruptors.
  • Synthetic fragrances: These are best to be avoided, as they often contain undisclosed chemicals that can lead to allergies or skin sensitivity. It’s important to note that there are many factors in whether synthetic fragrances are absorbed by the skin. (Most skincare isn’t engineered to absorb fragrance into the skin since its effects are made to remain on the surface so you can smell it!) This doctor breaks down everything you need to know about fragrance in skincare.
  • Heavy metals: Ingredients such as lead and cadmium can accumulate in the body over time and have toxic effects.
  • Talc: This powdery ingredient is often contaminated with asbestos, which is a known carcinogen.

For a comprehensive list, check out our complete guide of ingredients to avoid in cosmetics.

The post 10 Best Natural Foundations With Non Toxic Ingredients appeared first on The Good Trade.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

I’ve personally tested and researched the top clean beauty brands — these are my picks for the best natural, nontoxic foundations.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again — I don’t love foundation. I’ve found it can cause more problems than it conceals, making me too dry, or too oily, or emphasizing texture and flakes. But testing out some of the best clean foundations on the market might have made me a convert!

I have combination, acne-prone skin and, thanks to retinoids, a dry complexion except for my oily T-zone. I look for foundations that provide a natural-looking coverage, and, most importantly, don’t get cakey. (I shudder to remember the mid-2000s dry, matte foundation looks I grew up on. And not a single decent moisturizer in sight.) It’s always a plus when a formulation has beneficial ingredients like niacinamide or squalane — and many of the below clean formulations do.

Why wear nontoxic foundations with natural or organic ingredients?

Cosmetic products don’t need FDA approval to go on the market, and cosmetic companies aren’t required to share their safety information with the FDA. So while most cosmetic ingredients are perfectly safe, others have been linked to health issues. Certain preservatives contain formaldehyde, which can be carcinogenic, and phthalates are potential endocrine disruptors.

The following brands create makeup that puts your skin first, the way it should have always been. They emphasize ingredients you’ll find in your favorite skincare products for skin that looks better when you take off your makeup, not worse. Natural and organic ingredients, along with safe synthetics, reduce the risk of irritation and make these foundations ideal for anyone with sensitive skin or whose skin is prone to inflammation-based conditions like acne, rosacea, or eczema. And every brand prioritizes sustainability, with measures like minimal packaging, recycled plastic, and ethical sourcing.

What should you look for in a nontoxic foundation?

When shopping for a nontoxic foundation, the goal is to find a product that’s both safe for your skin and effective in performance. Start your search by looking for foundations with clean, transparent ingredient lists — bonus points if they’re certified by reputable third-party organizations. Certifications like EWG Verified, Made Safe, USDA Organic, or Ecocert can help you identify products that meet strict health and safety standards. These labels aren’t just marketing fluff — they indicate that a product has gone through extra scrutiny for ingredient safety and sourcing.

It’s also a good idea to check resources like INCIDecoder, which lets you upload a photo or paste in an ingredient list to break down what each component does and how safe it is. Another favorite is CosDNA, which analyzes product formulas to show their potential for clogging pores, causing irritation, or raising any safety concerns. If you’re looking for an official source, CosIng is a database from the European Commission that helps clarify which ingredients are commonly used in cosmetics and which are flagged as potentially harmful substances. And for those who love learning through conversation, The Beauty Brains podcast is a super informative (and entertaining) resource where cosmetic scientists dive into trending topics, myths, and ingredient deep-dives to help make sense of the beauty world.

At the end of the day, a truly nontoxic foundation balances safety, performance, and transparency. And remember — foundation is not one size fits all. Depending on your skin type, sensitivity, and product ingredient list, different foundations will suit different skin types. I’ve tried plenty of options below to help you figure out which natural foundation will likely work best for your skin needs!

Our methodology & criteria:

The Good Trade was sent these 10 foundations for review, and I personally tested them all. To test each foundation, I applied one pump (when applicable) all over with my fingers, then blended it in with a damp makeup sponge. I wore each foundation for two full days to see how it looked in different lighting and how it wore throughout the day. For reference, my skin is combo and acne-prone, with a slightly oily T-zone and dryness everywhere else. After personally testing, combing through customer reviews, and doing research including corresponding with brands, these are our top picks for the cleanest foundations. We regularly update this list when emerging products meet the following criteria.

NONTOXIC | Each brand below demonstrates a level of commitment to sourcing clean ingredients only. Many also use plastic-free packaging and/or have third-party sustainability certifications.
SHADE MATCHING | I used each website’s photos to determine my shade — you’ll see that some were easier to figure out than others! Also, the lighter the coverage, the easier the shade matching (because you have more wiggle room).
AFFORDABLE | You’ll find foundations at various price points on this list, so there’s something for every budget.

Read on for my honest thoughts and tips on the following clean foundations. And if you’re looking for more clean makeup reviews, check out our guides on lipsticks and mascaras.

Best For | Dewy, hydrated skin
Natural Ingredients | Aloe juice, niacinamide, squalane
Coverage Level | Light
Shades Available | 30
My Shade | Salina SF5
Price Range | $54

Ilia’s True Skin Serum Foundation is a step up from their Skin Tint in terms of coverage — it provides light coverage but can be built up to medium. The foundation blends in easily and leaves a dewy finish, so I might prefer it more in the winter when my skin is drier. Ilia’s added some skincare ingredients into the product, too — it has niacinamide, allantoin, and aloe, all at levels shown to benefit the skin. Ilia is committed to 1% for the Planet, and they back all of their makeup with skincare ingredients, creating clean products that prioritize the health of your skin and the planet.

Best For | Lightweight coverage foundation
Natural Ingredients | Champagne grape seed oil, coconut alkanes, rose powder pigments
Coverage Level | Light/medium
Shades Available | 13
My Shade | Naked Beige
Price Range | $45

Juice Beauty’s Phyto-Pigments Flawless Serum Foundation has my ideal light/medium coverage and a skin-like, not too dewy finish — this one might be my personal favorite. It’s full of skincare ingredients like antioxidant-rich grape seed oil and aloe juice, and it has a liquidy texture that substitutes silicones with coconut alkanes for a smooth finish. Plus, it looked exactly the same at the end of the day as it did at the beginning. Naked Beige was a perfect match for my summer tan, but I’d need something lighter in the winter — note that the shade matching was pretty difficult online, and the shade range isn’t phenomenal. Juice Beauty’s products are clean without sacrificing function, combining organic ingredients with clinically proven formulas for a foundation that works.

Saie is a buzzy, new-ish brand known for its skincare-first formulations. I’ve called them Glossier for adults in the past, reviewing some of their other products. Their Glowy Super Skin Tint Foundation fits their you-but-better model, giving you what is, in my opinion, a perfect amount of coverage — something between light and medium. It has a dewy but skin-like finish that also fits my preference, looking natural but still blurring imperfections really well. The brand calls the product 85% skincare and 15% weightless pigment, packing it with skin-loving ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin, which draw in moisture, and rice bran peptides, which reduce the appearance of fine lines and hyperpigmentation. Maybe I’ll see an improvement in skin texture if I start wearing it every day!

Best For | High-coverage foundation
Natural Ingredients | Squalane, glycerin, jojoba oil, aloe
Coverage Level | Medium/full
Shades Available | 16
My Shade | 11.5
Price Range | $55; $45 per refill

Providing the most coverage of all the options I tried, RMS’s ReEvolve Natural Finish Foundation gives medium to full coverage in a formula that’s still packed with hydrating ingredients like glycerin and squalane. The refillable packaging reduces plastic, and the formula instantly evens skin tone and gets rid of redness without getting cakey. While its finish is a little more matte than my preferred dewy looks, I have to admit this will probably be my new go-to for formal events — especially weddings when I’m getting sweaty on the dance floor. To me, you can kind of feel this foundation sitting on the face, so while it’s not an everyday option for me, the finish is pretty darn flawless for special occasions. And that’s pretty much what RMS Beauty excels at — clean formulations that feel elevated and perform super well.

5. MERIT

Best For | On-the-go touch-ups
Natural Ingredients | Sea daffodil extract, mica, glycerin
Coverage Level | Light/medium
Shades Available | 20
My Shade | Bisque
Price Range | $38

MERIT’s Minimalist Perfecting Complexion Stick gives you as much or as little coverage as you want, anywhere you need it—and nowhere you don’t. It applies like a buttery concealer but blends out to a light/medium coverage foundation. I applied small strokes of Bisque where I most needed it — chin, forehead, nasolabial folds, and acne scars — and the lighter shade Ecru under my eyes, and buffed it all out with a makeup sponge (although the brand recs a makeup brush), leaving a surprisingly natural, glowy finish with just the right about of coverage. While the foundation was much easier to blend with a spritz of water or setting spray, it’s still such a convenient product for slipping in your bag for easy breezy coverage when you’re on the go. Merit prides itself on its minimalistic beauty products that eliminate any potentially harmful or irritating ingredients.

6. ATTITUDE

Cruelty free
Plant trees
Plastic/Pfas free
Vegan

Best For | Oily skin & sustainable packaging
Natural Ingredients | Algae extract, sunflower seed oil, plankton extract
Coverage Level | Light/medium
Shades Available | 6
My Shade | Nude
Price Range | $35

ATTITUDE’s Light Coverage Foundation Stick has some great stuff going for it — it’s packaged completely in cardboard, it swipes directly onto the skin for easy application, and it’s only $35. While it glided smoothly over my skin on application, it had a drier finish than I was hoping for, taking a couple of extra spritzes of water on my sponge to fully blend out and emphasizing my flakiness a tiny bit. Once blended, it had a nice natural finish with a light to medium coverage, which I love, and it looked great an hour later. It’s just that I prefer something dewier. This one would be great for oily folks who don’t struggle with any dryness! I could also see the formula drying out over the course of a few months since it’s packaged in cardboard. Attitude does more than just makeup, making clean skincare, body care, and even home goods with some impressive sustainability practices like using minimal plastic.

7. Jones Road

Cruelty free
FSC
Gluten free
Woman owned

Best For | Sheer, buildable coverage
Natural Ingredients | Hyaluronic acid, jojoba oil, olive oil
Coverage Level | Light, can be built up to medium
Shades Available | 12
My Shade | Fair
Price Range | $46

I really liked this one — What the Foundation has light coverage reads more like a tinted moisturizer than a foundation, but it’s easy to apply more layers and build up the coverage closer to medium. It comes in a beautiful glass pot that’s recyclable but not ideal for traveling, and it has a nice herbal scent from the ginger root oil. It has the consistency of a thick day cream, making it easy to pick up just the right amount, and left a dewy finish that I love but wouldn’t be ideal for oily skin types or hot summer days. I love how it evened out my tone, reducing redness, while still letting the skin’s natural texture show through — if I had cute freckles it wouldn’t cover them up. Founded by makeup artist Bobbi Brown, Jones Road specializes in clean formulations that are easy to use, and this product fits that description — it applied easily with my fingers, but blended out seamlessly with the sponge. One note: Some folks complain about separation, and of my two samples, one came emulsified and silky and the other was separated and needed a mix. It doesn’t seem to affect performance, though.

8. Well People

Budget friendly
Cruelty free
FSC
Fair trade
Vegan

Best For | Powder foundation
Natural Ingredients | Corn starch, squalane, niacinamide
Coverage Level | Light
Shades Available | 12
My Shade | 4N
Price Range | $27

Well People’s Bio Powder Foundation might be my favorite powder I’ve ever tried. Instead of making my skin feel dry and cakey, it adds a luminous glow with the addition of light-reflecting mica and hydrating squalane, and it uses cornstarch instead of talc to absorb excess shine. It has light but buildable coverage, subtly blurring imperfections and making your skin a bit more radiant. Since I’m combo, I still prefer to use it only on my t-zone over a tinted moisturizer, but the powder is great for shine-reducing touch-ups on any skin type, dry to oily, and leaves skin with a lightweight, natural finish. Well People exclusively uses clean, ethically sourced ingredients for its dermatologist-developed formulas.

9. Kosas

Cruelty free

Vegan
Woman owned

Best For | Medium coverage foundation
Natural Ingredients | Caffeine, squalane, peptides, niacinamide, artemisia flower extract
Coverage Level | Medium
Shades Available | 36
My Shade | 190
Price Range | $42

While Kosas’ Revealer Skin-Improving Foundation had the most coverage of any foundation I tested, it still lets skin show through with a medium coverage. It’s packed with beneficial ingredients — niacinamide and caffeine for brightening, peptides and hyaluronic acid for plumping, and zinc oxide for SPF 25 sun protection. It had a nice skin-like finish that did dry down and become slightly cakey by the end of the day, so I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone who’s super dry. I’d also recommend a setting spray, as it definitely isn’t transfer-proof! Kosas specializes in skin-first makeup, making products clinically proven to improve your complexion — so their foundation is a great open for someone who’s conscious about the health of their skin and the planet, but wants a boost in coverage.

10. 100% Pure

Vegan

Best For | Travel-friendly packaging
Natural Ingredients | Avocado oil, aloe, rice powder, pomegranate seed oil
Coverage Level | Medium
Shades Available | 7
My Shade | White Peach
Price Range | $48

100% Pure’s Fruit Pigmented Cream Foundation is the first foundation I’ve ever used that comes in a tin, meaning it’s super lightweight and easy to travel with — plus it’s easily recyclable, too. Pigmented naturally with fruit and cocoa beans, the solid-form foundation still has lots of slip — its number one ingredient is avocado oil. In fact, take a look at its ingredient list and you’ll see it’s made of nothing but different plant extracts, like pretty much everything else at the small company. It blended out easier that I thought it would with the damp sponge, giving a pretty medium coverage. Its finish is more satin than dewy and by the end of the day it was settling into my smile lines a tiny bit — so it’s probably unforgiving on super dry skin types. My shade, “white peach,” seemed a little orange at first (“creme” might have been a better shade match) but blended in well — note that the brand only has seven shades, so not a great shade range.

What are the most common ingredients to avoid in foundation?

When it comes to picking the right foundation, it’s not just about finding your perfect shade or finish — it’s also about knowing what’s actually in the product. Foundation sits on your skin all day, so the ingredients matter, especially if you’re dealing with sensitive skin, acne, or conditions like rosacea or eczema. Some ingredients can be irritating, pore-clogging, or just unnecessary. Let’s break down the most common ones to watch out for, why they might be problematic, and how to navigate the sometimes murky world of product labels — especially when it comes to fragrance.

Fragrance

Let’s start with fragrance, since it’s one of the most talked-about (and confusing) ingredients in skincare and makeup. “Fragrance” or “parfum” often shows up in foundation ingredient lists, but here’s the issue: Brands aren’t required to disclose what goes into that single word. A product might list “fragrance,” but that could mean a mix of dozens of chemical compounds — and the specific blend is often considered a “trade secret.” That’s where the lack of transparency comes in.

Now, not all fragrances are inherently bad. Some are derived from natural sources and are perfectly safe for most people. Others are synthetic but created to be non-irritating. The problem is, unless a brand clearly discloses what’s used, it’s hard to know what you’re putting on your face. If you have sensitive skin, allergies, or react to certain scents, you might experience redness, breakouts, itching, or even dermatitis from fragranced products — without being able to pinpoint the cause.

So, should you avoid all fragrance in foundation? Not necessarily. If you don’t have sensitivities and enjoy the sensory experience of scented products, you’re probably fine. But if your skin is reactive or you’re trying to simplify your routine, it’s worth looking for fragrance-free formulas (ideally labeled “no added fragrance” or “unscented” — though even those terms can be misleading). Some brands will be fully transparent and list essential oils or botanical extracts used as fragrance alternatives, which is a good sign they’re being upfront.

Alcohol Denat (Denatured Alcohol)

This is a common one in foundations, especially long-wear or matte formulas. Alcohol denat is used to help the product dry quickly and feel lightweight, but it can be super drying and irritating, especially for sensitive or dry skin types. Over time, high concentrations can strip the skin’s natural barrier, leading to more oil production (ironic, right?), inflammation, and even breakouts. If alcohol denat is one of the first ingredients listed, and you’re struggling with dryness or sensitivity, you may want to skip that formula.

Parabens

Parabens are preservatives used to extend the shelf life of cosmetics by preventing the growth of bacteria and mold. You’ll often see them listed as methylparaben, butylparaben, propylparaben, or ethylparaben. They’ve been controversial due to concerns about their potential to mimic estrogen in the body and disrupt the endocrine system. While the scientific consensus is still evolving, many people prefer to err on the side of caution and go for paraben-free formulas. Luckily, more and more brands are phasing out parabens, so they’re easier to avoid now than ever before.

Silicones (like Dimethicone)

Silicones are used in foundation to give that silky, smooth glide and to help blur imperfections. Dimethicone is the most common one. For many people, silicones are totally fine and can even help lock in moisture and give a flawless finish. But some folks — especially those with acne-prone or congested skin — find that silicones can trap oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells, potentially worsening breakouts. If you’ve noticed more clogged pores or breakouts after switching to a certain foundation, and it contains dimethicone, that could be the culprit.

That said, not all silicones are bad, and they don’t “suffocate” your skin the way myths often suggest. It really depends on your skin type and how diligent you are with cleansing at the end of the day. If you like the texture silicones provide but want a lighter option, look for water-based or silicone-free foundations that still deliver a smooth finish.

Mineral Oil and Petroleum Derivatives

Mineral oil and other petroleum-based ingredients are often used in foundations to create a smooth, moisturizing feel. But they can also be comedogenic, especially for those with oily or acne-prone skin. These ingredients form a film on the skin, which can trap dirt and bacteria if your pores are already clogged. Petroleum-based ingredients also derived from fossil fuels which wreak havoc on our environment, making it ideal to avoid in your cosmetics.

What makes a foundation the right match for someone’s skin and lifestyle?

Some foundations just hit differently depending on your skin type, preferences, and lifestyle — and there’s a good reason for that. The truth is, no one-size-fits-all formula exists when it comes to makeup, especially with foundation. What works beautifully on one person might be a total disaster for someone else, and that usually comes down to a mix of skin chemistry, ingredients, application technique, and even what you’re doing that day. (Think: Lounging at home vs. dancing at a wedding.)

First, let’s talk about ingredients. Foundations made with more natural or plant-based ingredients tend to appeal to people with sensitive or reactive skin because they’re often gentler and free from common irritants. Ingredients like aloe vera, jojoba oil, green tea extract, or chamomile can actually soothe the skin while you wear them. But the tradeoff is that these formulas often don’t have the same shelf life as synthetic ones. Without strong preservatives, natural foundations can spoil faster or separate if not stored properly — especially if they’re clean, vegan, or “green beauty” focused. They might also wear off more quickly throughout the day, which can be frustrating if you’re looking for all-day coverage. However, for someone whose skin gets itchy or breaks out easily, this kind of formula might be totally worth the extra TLC it requires.

On the flip side, foundations with more lab-created, non-toxic synthetic ingredients often bring better performance to the table. These formulas tend to last longer on the skin, resist sweat and oil, and hold up better under heat or humidity. That’s why a lot of full-coverage, long-wear, or matte foundations lean into science-backed ingredients that help them stay put. Plus, these products often have a more consistent texture and longer shelf life. Just because something is “synthetic” doesn’t mean it’s bad — in fact, many synthetic ingredients have been developed specifically to be safer and more stable than some of their natural counterparts.

At the end of the day, a foundation that works “better” for someone comes down to a combo of what their skin needs and what kind of experience they want from the product. Some people prioritize clean ingredients and skin benefits, while others just want coverage that doesn’t budge. And there are plenty of formulas out there trying to meet both those goals — which is great news, but also why it can take a little trial and error to find your perfect match. Whether you’re chasing longevity, glow, comfort, or clean ingredients, the best foundation is the one that ultimately, makes you feel confident in your skin.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We’ve personally used and researched clean skincare brands for years — these are our top picks with natural, organic, and nontoxic ingredients at a range of price points.

A daily skincare regimen is one of the easiest ways to ensure both long-term skin health and a glowing complexion. Natural and organic skincare products, in particular, combine essential vitamins, botanicals, and minerals that heal and restore our skin — without harming our bodies or the earth. They are our favorite accessible types of products we turn to when we’re looking to improve and care for our skin.

Why choose clean skincare products?

Natural skincare products are great if you’re looking to boost your skin’s health with fewer artificial ingredients, chemicals, and fragrances. Unfortunately many skincare products include harmful chemicals which can compromise our skin and our health (like parabens, sulfates, and synthetic fragrances, which can mess with your skin’s natural balance or cause irritation). Rather, natural skincare harnesses the power of ingredients like plant extracts and oils that are typically gentler on the skin, with fewer chances of adverse effects. These ingredients also tend to be richer in absorbable vitamins and nutrients that help support your skin barrier.

Natural skincare brands also lean towards sourcing their ingredients sustainability, and minimizing their impact on the environment through organic farming and eco-friendly packaging. If you’re looking to lessen your exposure to synthetics, opting for clean skincare can expose you to less potential harmful ingredients, while helping better our planet!

What ingredients should you look out for?

When choosing skincare, it’s just as important to know what to avoid as it is to know what to look for. Steer clear of harsh ingredients like parabens, which are preservatives that can disrupt hormones, and phthalates, often used in fragrances, as they may harm your health. Synthetic fragrances and artificial dyes can irritate sensitive skin and trigger allergies, so opt for products with natural scents or no added fragrance. Avoid sulfates (like SLS and SLES), which are harsh cleansing agents that can strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry and irritated. Ingredients like formaldehyde and its releasers (such as DMDM hydantoin) are a no-go, as they are potential carcinogens. Lastly, avoid triclosan, an antibacterial agent linked to hormone disruption and environmental harm. By skipping these ingredients, your skin and health will thank you in the long run!

It’s important to look for ingredients that are gentle, effective, and naturally derived. Below we’ve listed a couple of ingredients that we love seeing in our clean skincare products!

  • Hyaluronic acid: A must-have for hydration, as it helps your skin retain moisture and keeps it looking plump and healthy.
  • Vitamin C: A beneficial ingredient, known for brightening the skin, reducing dark spots, and protecting against environmental damage caused by free radicals.
  • Collagen & vegan collagen: For a boost in skin elasticity, look for collagen, which helps maintain a firm complexion. Vegan collagen is also a great way to boost your skins own natural collagen without relying on animal-derived sources.
  • Plant-based oils: Jojoba, argan, and, rosehip oils are fantastic for deeply moisturizing the skin without clogging pores or causing breakouts.
  • Gentle exfoliants: Natural options like fruit enzymes from papaya or pineapple can smooth your skin while being kinder than harsh scrubs.
  • Soothing ingredients: To calm irritation or redness, ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile, and green tea extract work wonders.
  • Niacinamide (vitamin B3): A powerhouse ingredient for balancing oil production, reducing the appearance of pores, and improving overall skin texture.
  • Squalane: A lightweight yet highly effective hydrater that mimics your skin’s natural oils. Plant-based squalane is a great cruelty-free alternative, too!

Bonus — the packaging is recyclable and is formulated to work well for sensitive skin.

Customer Review | “This stuff is liquid gold. In the past 10 years since I first tried it, I’ve never found any other product that does as much for my skin as this oil does. This oil obliterates my acne almost overnight — I also have extremely sensitive skin that overproduces oil/sebum to the point that it results in face dandruff (that to the untrained eye looks like flaky dry skin), but this balances it out making my skin look so dewy and healthy when NOTHING else works, not even prescription medicine. I hope to use this stuff until I die.” – Abigail (Read more reviews.)

We’ve researched and tested dozens of the best ingestible beauty supplements — these are our top picks, made with clean and natural ingredients.

While natural beauty and wellness brands may not be looking to discontinue topical skincare lines anytime soon, a shift is happening in the industry. “You are what you eat” is how the famous saying goes, and this is true for our hair, nails, and skin health too.

Studies on the impact of the gut on skin health reveal that “…any alteration among gut microbial diversity (dysbiosis) can increase [human intestine] vulnerability…which can subsequently influence skin health.” This is amongst one of the many reasons why we are seeing so many beauty and wellness brands release supplements, vitamins, powders, and ingestibles for skin health. Nourishing and supporting our internal health ultimately shows on the outside, too.

How do beauty supplements help with our skincare routines?

Ingestible beauty supplements combat external concerns like acne, dehydration, and declining collagen levels while also supporting overall wellness. By complementing your morning face wash and moisturizer with a skin-focused supplement, you’re supporting your skin from the inside out with ingredients that support hydration, elasticity, and barrier health over time. Many formulas are designed to work systemically, meaning they may also help balance gut bacteria, improve digestion, and support steady energy levels, all of which can influence how your skin looks and feels. Think of them as a supportive layer in your routine, not a replacement for topical care. And yes, sunscreen is still non-negotiable — your skin will absolutely thank you.

Is it safe to take beauty supplements?

Beauty supplements can be safe but there are some things to consider. With the rising popularity of “skin, hair, and nails” supplements, there are many recent studies that reveal the risks surrounding some of the trendier supplements, particularly related to ingredients, dosages, and a lack of third-party testing. Dietary supplements are also regulated as food, not drugs, meaning supplement manufacturers do not need to provide any proof of safety, efficacy, or quality prior to putting their product out on the market. This makes it especially tough to scope out which products are safe for our health.

While there are some concerns around the safety of beauty supplements, choosing high-quality, well-formulated products can make them both effective and safe to consume. Beauty supplements from trusted brands clearly list how much of each vitamin, mineral, or botanical you’re getting and avoid ones that make unrealistic claims (like “miracle skin fixes overnight”). Supplements that have been certified by reputable organizations for clean ingredients and safety (like non-GMO or USDA organic) and responsible and ethical standards (like grass-fed and vegan) ensure what’s on the label is actually in the bottle. It’s good to check the ingredient list and stick with clean, recognizable ingredients rather than overly long lists of artificial additives, fillers, or high doses of nutrients you don’t need. It’s also smart to consider whether the supplement fits with your diet and any other vitamins you already take. If you have health conditions or take medications, speak to a healthcare provider to make sure it’s right for you.

Our Criteria:

After researching, corresponding with brands, and combing through customer reviews, our editors have chosen the best beauty supplements that are safe, made with clean and natural ingredients. We update this list regularly with new, emerging favorites, and all of our picks are evaluated to meet the following criteria.

  • CLEAN INGREDIENTS | These beauty supplements are made with clean, natural, and organic ingredients that are nourishing and supportive for both your internal and external wellness.
  • BRAND CERTIFICATIONS | Each of these beauty supplements carry certifications by reputable organizations and are third-party tested or clinically tested to ensure they’re safe, effective, and free from unnecessary additives and contaminants.
  • EASY TO TAKE/DIGEST | It can be challenging to add another supplement to your routine, especially if it’s hard to swallow or tough to digest. That’s why we’ve included powders, teas, and easy-to-take capsules that suit different needs and are gentle on your digestion.

Vegan

Best For | Liver function
Active Ingredients | Organic turmeric root extract, organic dandelion root extract, organic milk thistle seed extract, organic ginger root powder
Price | Starting at $90/3-pack bottles; discounted subscriptions available

When we talk about beauty supplements, the liver doesn’t always get the spotlight, but it should. Dose For Your Liver is a drinkable, clinically backed herbal supplement designed to support your liver as it filters out unwanted elements and keeps your body running smoothly. Because the liver plays a role in hormone balance, digestion, and energy production, supporting it can have a ripple effect on both how you feel and how your skin looks. When your liver is overworked, it can show up externally as dullness, congestion, or low energy. When it is supported, your body is better able to process nutrients, manage inflammation, and stay balanced. Dose uses real ingredients like curcumin, milk thistle, dandelion, ginger, and orange in an easy-to-absorb liquid form that is gentler on digestion than capsules and simple to take daily.

Our Editor’s Review | “Dose quickly became part of my morning routine. I keep it in the fridge and take one shot a day. So simple and I literally look forward to it. Over time, I can see this becoming less about playing catch-up and more about maintaining balance. My digestion feels calmer. My energy, steadier. It’s supportive in the most perfect way in that it doesn’t feel medicinal at all — which is exactly what I want from something I plan to use long-term.” – Emily Wagner, Contributing Editor [Read our full review.]

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

Our editors have used and researched the best in skincare and wellness for years. These are our favorite lymphatic drainage tools made from thoughtful materials to be gentle and effective.

If you ever wake up with your face feeling puffy or you’re just hoping to feel less congestion, lymphatic drainage massage might be just what you need. These facial massages can help reduce inflammation, depuff your face, and release stagnation that can build up in the lymph system. While lymphatic massages can be done with your hands, many people prefer to use lymphatic drainage tools to help. On this list are some of our favorite lymphatic drainage tools, from gua shas to microcurrent facial tools, to add to your self-care routine. 🫶

What is lymphatic drainage?

The lymphatic system is an important part of our immune system, helping our body filter out waste and bacteria. The network of vessels and organs lies beneath the skin and includes lymph fluid. Lymphatic drainage massages help move excess lymph fluid toward working lymph vessels and nodes so they can help filter out the toxins in your body. This helps reduce inflammation and puffiness in our face.

What are the types of lymphatic drainage tools?

The most common type of lymphatic drainage tool is the gua sha. These handheld tools are typically made from jade, rose quartz, or stainless steel, and help massage your face to depuff and aid in lymphatic drainage. Some other types of lymphatic drainage tools for your face include: face massage rollers, lymphatic brushes, multitools like this one from True Botanicals, or even massage tools that incorporate microcurrents like this one from NuFace

How to do a lymphatic drainage massage on your face:

You can do a lymphatic drainage massage with your hands, but tools can help aid with the process and provide extra benefits — plus, tools might just make it a bit easier to slide along your face. Before you get started, make sure you wash your hands and the tool you’re using. Everyone (and every tool) has a slightly different recommendation for how to do it, but here’s a general outline for beginners:

  1. Prep your skin by gently massaging your favorite facial oil onto your face and neck. This will help the tool glide as you do the massage.
  2. Start with your neck. Gently massage the tool up and down your neck a few times using a flat side of the tool. Do this at least five times.
  3. Then, move to your jawline. You’ll want to flip the tool so that the side with divots is on your chin. Move from the center of your chin upward along your jawline. Do this at least five times.
  4. Move your way up your cheek, using the flat side of the tool again. At the end of each pass, make sure to lightly “jiggle” the tool to release tension. Do this at least five times.
  5. When you get to your under eyes, make sure to lighten the pressure, as it’s a sensitive area. Continue the same sweeping motion from the center of your face to the outside. Do this at least five times.
  6. Move the tool in an upward motion on your forehead. Do this at least five times.
  7. Finally, move the tool down your face, releasing all of the tension and allowing the lymphatic drainage to release.

Want to follow along with a video? Our team loves this quick 5-minute face lymphatic drainage massage. Many of the tools on this guide also have specific tutorials and videos for how to use them for the best results.

Our criteria:

  • EFFECTIVE | The tools on this list are ergonomically designed to help with lymphatic drainage without applying too much pressure on your skin.
  • EASY TO USE | These lymphatic drainage tools are simple to use and come with instructions, tutorials, and in some cases videos for how to best use them.
  • AFFORDABLE | We’ve included lymphatic drainage tool options for every budget on this list.

Pair your lymphatic drainage tools with some new skincare, since many of these tools require moisture before you begin — check out our favorite natural and nontoxic skincare.
