We’re not just editors, we’re also moms who have given clean vitamins to our kids for years. These are our picks for kids’ fiber supplements with natural ingredients that are free from unnecessary sugar, dyes, and additives

As a parent, I’m always looking for anything to make my son’s life easier, healthier, and safer. From time to time, your little one might experience uncomfortable complications such as constipation, which is where a children’s fiber supplement comes in. These can promote regular bowel movements, and fiber is also proven to help with weight control, prevent heart disease and diabetes, and even lower chances of getting some types of cancer.

Fruits, veggies, beans, and whole grains are often recommended for adding more natural fiber into your child’s diet. But as we all know, picky eaters don’t always want dietary fibers. If you’ve noticed those nutritional gaps, you’re not alone — most American children and adults don’t get enough fiber from food alone. When in doubt, trust in these best-selling fiber supplements designed specifically for kids.

What makes fiber supplements safe for kids?

Some fiber supplements are considered safe for children, but the experts at Kaiser Permanente say natural fiber supplements are safest (though they could make your child feel bloated). Keep in mind that the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) says, “food-based, natural fibers are recommended over supplements.”

If you can’t get the most natural source of dietary fiber, talk to your child’s doctor about taking a fiber supplement. The AAP also notes that ingesting fiber supplements without enough water can actually worsen your child’s constipation. Make sure your little one stays well-hydrated and follow instructions carefully if you choose to offer a fiber supplement. In more extreme cases, your doctor might prescribe a stool softener or laxative.

Our criteria:

Our team has tested and researched dozens of supplements for kids and scoured thousands of customer reviews to find the best clean fiber supplements for children that are dye-free, formulated without any added or unnatural sugar, and are easy to take. We regularly update this list with emerging options that meet the following criteria:

 • CLEAN INGREDIENTS | Each of these options is made with natural and organic ingredients — and is free of additives, dyes, synthetics, and allergens making them safe and beneficial for your kiddos.
 • LOW OR NO SUGAR | The last thing we want is for our kids’ vitamins to be loaded with sugar. We’ve ensured each of these supplements contains no or very low amounts of sugar.
 • TASTES GOOD & EASY TO SWALLOW | Vitamins that taste good and are easy to swallow help our children get their daily dose of nutrients without any fuss. We’ve researched and can confirm each of these tastes great.

Fiber isn’t the only kid-friendly supplement we’ve written about. You can also browse the best organic kids’ multivitamins.

And for the parents, there’s convenience and a budget-friendly approach to ordering supplements for one, two, or three kids at a time. The company has thought of virtually everything, too, creating a multivitamin, daily probiotic, green powder, and immune system sticks (all of which received a seal of approval from contributing editor Stephanie Fallon).

Best For | Older kids
Active Ingredients | Nine probiotic strains and a fiber-based prebiotic
Daily Dose | One sachet poured and mixed into food or drink

For a versatile flavor, consider nabbing these sachets from Seed. Each one is powered up with nine probiotic strains and a fiber-based prebiotic, and all you need to do is tear, pour, and add it to your child’s food or drink. Just make sure you only mix it into room temperature or cold items — not anything hot. The brand recommends consuming the supplement within 30 minutes and offering it to your child at the same time each day. If your child loves it, you can use it for years. The product is made for children from age 3 to 17.

Seed products are rigorously tested for more than 20 allergens, including sugar, soy, gluten, dairy, and nuts. Each serving will provide your child with 5 grams of fiber, and the key benefits promoted are gastrointestinal immunity, dermatological health, and respiratory health. Anecdotally, several parents have gushed about this product in the reviews section, sharing that their children experienced fewer sick days and resolved skin issues such as eczema. Who doesn’t love a few bonus benefits, besides the more obvious bowel movement perk?

Best For | Flavorless supplement

For more than 30 years, Culturelle has provided probiotics supporting digestive health and immunity for everyone in the family. Similar to the mix-in from Seed, Culturelle Kids Probiotic + Fiber Packets are flavorless powders you can add to room temperature or cold foods and drinks. The brand suggests stirring it into yogurt or applesauce for best results. And unlike others on our list, it’s safe for babies 1 year and older, and they can take it up to three times per day.

There are two options available for purchase: a 24- or 60-pack. One-time purchases are a bit pricier, or you can subscribe and save 10% on your order. Perhaps the most accessible fiber supplement on the market, you can easily find it at your local Walmart, Target, CVS, and Walgreens.

Customer Review | “All I need for my little one to have daily movements. She is 5 and has been using this for almost a year. She watches me put it in her drink and doesn’t mind because she doesn’t taste it. If I forget and miss a day, she doesn’t have a movement that day or it comes out harder. This is how I know it works!” – MercuryMom (Read more reviews.

6. Begin Health

American made
Doctor approved
Third party tested

Best For | Fiber supplement with HMOs
Active Ingredients | HMOs, chicory root fiber
Daily Dose | One packet per day for kids 1-3, up to two packets per day for kids 4 and up
Prices Starting At | $33.96 for a 28-pack

Designed as a better-for-you laxative, Begin Health’s Daily Growing Up Prebiotics are fiber supplements many parents shared their doctors recommended. The most unique aspect of this powder is the 2’-FL HMOs, or human milk oligosaccharide, which is “the most abundant prebiotic in breast milk,” per the brand. As for the fiber element, each serving has 3 grams of chicory root fiber. These two main ingredients work together to support healthy digestion and more gentle bowel movements.

If you’re interested in testing out whether the supplement works for your child, start slow. Begin Health advises that parents administer half of a packet at first and gradually increase the amount over the next several days. When you’re mixing, add the flavorless powder to milk, water, or another drink. It can also work with snack foods like yogurt. These are available in packs with 28, 56, and 112 servings. If you select the second option, the family size is offered in two additional flavors: strawberry creamsicle and banana fudgesicle. While it’s allergen-friendly, this product may contain traces of milk so it’s not considered dairy-free.

Customer Review | “I added Begin Health to a smoothie for my son and it was obvious it worked! Tasteless so it was an easy add-on. Thank you for a great product.” – Hannah G. (Read more reviews.

7. Smarty Pants

Gluten free
Soy free
Third party tested
Vegetarian

Best For | Adding more veggies to your child’s diet
Active Ingredients | Organic greens blend, inulin, pectin, citric acid
Daily Dose | One to two gummies per day
Prices Starting At | $20.70 for a one-month supply

Here’s a fun fact about the Smarty Pants gummies: Consuming two of them will give your child the same amount of fiber as three cups of kale. That’s because of their organic greens blend (a powerhouse trio of kale, broccoli, and spinach) and chicory root fiber. You’ll love all the greens, and they’ll love that they’re hidden behind a delicious mixed berry flavor.

This product is best for kids 4 years and older. During the weeklong trial period, start with one gummy per day before increasing the dose to two daily. For even more supplemental support, you can add the brand’s multivitamin or find the best of both worlds in the Kids Plus Multi & Fiber. Need a little more peace of mind? The brand has also received a Purity Award from the Clean Label Project. Order every month, two months, or three months for bonus savings.

Our team has tested and researched dozens of strollers for our babies — these are our top selections for safety, non-toxic materials, and design across a range of price points.

You know what baby gear isn’t really optional? A stroller. For most parents, it’s part of daily survival. It’s how we get out of the house when we’re exhausted, how we squeeze in fresh air when the days feel long, and how we manage errands, walks, travel, and life with a baby (or toddler) in tow. Our strollers get folded and unfolded, lifted in and out of the trunk with one hand, and pushed over cracked sidewalks while we’re juggling coffee, snacks, and everything else we bring “just in case.”

Because of all that, a stroller has to work — and work well. It needs to be lightweight but sturdy, easy to maneuver, ergonomic for tired bodies, and comfortable enough that our baby actually wants to sit (and hopefully nap) in it. When we finally make it outside for a walk, we want it to feel calming and enjoyable, not like another thing to wrestle with.

And once those basics are covered, many of us start thinking about something else: what our baby is actually sitting in. Stroller seats and straps are in constant contact with their skin (and mouth, iykyk), and not all fabrics are created equal. Some are treated with flame retardants, PFAS (often called “forever chemicals”), and other synthetic finishes we’d rather keep out of our children’s everyday environment. That’s usually when the search begins for a stroller that functions beautifully and is made from safer materials.

The good news? Parents don’t have to choose between performance and peace of mind — not anymore. More brands are finally listening and designing strollers that are lightweight, thoughtfully engineered, and made with non-toxic fabrics that support babies’ comfort and our sanity. The strollers below are raising the bar, and as very tired parents, we’re genuinely grateful for it.

What stroller materials are safest for everyday use?

If you’re trying to limit unnecessary chemical exposure (without sacrificing comfort or practicality), here are some fabrics and certifications that are worth paying attention to:

GREENGUARD GOLD certified fabrics
Products with this certification are tested for low chemical emissions, especially volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can off-gas into the air and contribute to indoor air pollution. GREENGUARD Gold is a more stringent standard designed for sensitive groups, such as children. This means certified products tend to release fewer chemicals into the air than uncertified ones, which can be beneficial for items your baby uses frequently.

Organic cotton
Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, and because it’s a natural fiber, it doesn’t typically require chemical finishes. That makes it a good choice for breathability and comfort, especially next to baby’s skin. Many stroller brands that prioritize safer materials use cotton certified organic or GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard).

Wool or wool-blend fabrics
Wool has natural temperature-regulating properties and is inherently more flame-resistant than many synthetic fibers, allowing some manufacturers to avoid adding chemical flame retardants to meet safety standards. That said, true wool-blend strollers are less common than polyester, and you’ll want to check whether manufacturers treat wool in other ways.

Responsibly made recycled fabrics
Many strollers use polyester or nylon — because these materials are durable and easy to clean — but you can find versions made from recycled PET or other recycled inputs. These don’t automatically guarantee “non-toxic,” but some brands are certified (e.g., OEKO-TEX or GREENGUARD) or make explicit claims to be free of PFAS and flame retardants to minimize harmful chemical treatments.

A few nuances worth noting:

 • “Non-toxic” doesn’t have a single legal definition for strollers — no stroller can realistically be 100% free of all synthetics and chemicals, and there’s no mandatory safety test for fabrics the way there is for car seats or cribs.
 • Certifications like GREENGUARD Gold focus on emissions, not every possible harmful ingredient — so they’re one sound signal, but not a guarantee of zero exposure.
 • Labels such as OEKO-TEX or GOTS can also be strong indicators of low chemical residue levels, especially for fabrics that come into contact with skin.

Our criteria:

There’s no shortage of stroller options, from long-standing baby brands to newer, sustainability-focused companies. To help simplify the decision, we’ve curated this list using the criteria below and regularly update it as better materials and innovations emerge.

 • NONTOXIC MATERIALS | We prioritize strollers made without harmful chemicals like flame retardants, PFAS, BPA, and phthalates. Many of our picks feature GREENGUARD GOLD certified fabrics, organic textiles, or naturally resilient materials like wool.
 • DESIGN, SAFETY & FUNCTIONALITY | Every stroller we recommend meets essential safety standards while offering thoughtful, practical design — from ergonomic seating to sturdy construction that lasts through multiple stages (and siblings).
 • SUSTAINABILITY & VALUE | Our selections span a range of price points, but each one delivers strong value through durability, responsible sourcing, and safer materials. Investing in a well-made, non-toxic stroller isn’t just a purchase — it’s a long-term investment in your family’s health and a more sustainable future.

Table of contents

1. Nuna

GOTS certified
Greenguard certified
Natural materials
Third party tested
Warranty offered

Best For | Everyday strollers, travel systems, and parents who want premium design with safer materials
Nontoxic Materials | GREENGUARD Gold certified fabrics; select models feature Merino wool + TENCEL™ lyocell inserts
Features We Love | Lightweight designs, UPF 50+ canopies, single-hand fold, smooth suspension, near-flat recline options, generous storage baskets, 360 swivel wheels
Prices Starting At | $425+

Nuna is a go-to brand for parents seeking a high-quality, non-toxic stroller built for daily use. It’s the brand our editors love and trust most (read our Nuna review here) because the carseats and strollers are thoughtfully designed for real life — they are easy to fold, smooth to push, and comfortable for even the most wiggly baby. The SWIV, for example, has a lightweight carbon fiber-reinforced aluminum frame, one-touch braking for safety, and a button-activated 360° rotation on all 4 wheels, enabling side-to-side motion and instant pivot navigation. Fancy, no!?

Many Nuna strollers are GREENGUARD Gold Certified, meaning they meet strict standards for low chemical emissions. This matters for strollers, where babies are in close contact with the seat fabric and canopy. Some models, like the Nuna TRIV next, also include a removable insert made with Merino wool and TENCEL™ lyocell, which are naturally breathable and gentle on baby’s skin.

Functionally, Nuna strollers are both comfortable and convenient. The TRVL is especially popular for travel thanks to the lightweight frame and self-folding design (our editors have taken them on flights with ease), while the MIXX next works well as an everyday stroller with its smooth suspension, supportive recline, and spacious storage basket.

If you’re searching for a stroller that’s easy to use, comfortable for your baby, and made with safer materials, Nuna is a reliable, well-designed option that holds up to everyday life.

2. UPPAbaby

Greenguard certified
Natural materials
Third party tested
Warranty offered

Best For | Growing families who want a stroller system with flexible configurations (including options that support multiple kids, depending on model)
Nontoxic Materials | GREENGUARD Gold certified strollers (low chemical emissions), products meet applicable flammability standards without brominated/chlorinated chemicals like PBBs/PBDEs
Features We Love | Expandable seating (single to double), large UPF 50+ canopies, reversible seats, generous storage baskets, smooth suspension, adjustable handlebars
Prices Starting At | $250+

UPPAbaby is a brand we love and trust for baby gear that is solid, intuitive, and built to last. The strollers are designed for daily use — they are easy to steer, steady on uneven sidewalks, and spacious enough to carry everything that somehow comes along for every outing.

On the materials side, many UPPAbaby strollers are GREENGUARD Gold Certified, meeting the strict standards for low chemical emissions. The brand also states that its products meet required flammability standards without using certain brominated or chlorinated flame-retardant chemicals, which is an important consideration for fabric safety.

What really sets UPPAbaby apart, though, is the flexibility. Models like the Vista V3 are designed to adapt as your family grows, with options to move from a single stroller to configurations that accommodate multiple children (a huge sustainability win since you don’t need to get a new stroller). Reversible seats, large UPF 50+ canopies, and cushioned, adjustable seating help keep babies comfortable from newborn days through toddlerhood.

3. Bumbleride

Family owned
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Recycled materials
Warranty offered

Best For | Active families who want an all-terrain stroller with a strong focus on safer, eco-conscious materials
Nontoxic Materials | OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 (Class I)–certified fabrics made from 100% recycled PET; free from flame retardants, PFAS, BPA, phthalates, PVC, lead, formaldehyde, and chlorine

Bumbleride is ideal for highly active parents or for those who live in rural areas. The stroller is designed for uneven sidewalks, dirt paths, and everywhere in between. The air-filled tires and full suspension make a noticeable difference on rougher terrain and deliver durability without compromising comfort.

Materials are where Bumbleride really stands apart, though. All stroller fabrics and padding are OEKO-TEX Standard 100, Class I certified, meaning they’re tested for harmful substances and considered safe for direct contact with babies. The brand also states its strollers are made without common chemical additives parents often try to avoid, including flame retardants and PFAS. Fabrics are produced from 100% recycled plastic bottles, balancing durability with a lower environmental footprint.

Moreover, these stroller seats are padded and supportive, and many models recline or lie flat for newborn use. The canopies offer ample coverage for longer outings, and the double stroller is perfect for twins or siblings.

4. Zoe

Greenguard certified
Natural materials
Third party tested

Woman owned

Best For | Lightweight, travel-ready strollers that are easy to fold, expandable for growing families, and tested for everyday comfort and safety

The lineup includes travel-friendly strollers and modular choices to grow with your family. As for features, it has all the bells and whistles, including UPF 50+ canopies, breathable seat fabrics, and thoughtfully engineered frames that balance comfort for baby with convenience for parents. 5. Guava Roam

Greenguard certified
Natural materials
Small business
Warranty offered

Best For | Active parents who want one stroller that can handle daily walks and real runs
Nontoxic Materials | GREENGUARD Gold–certified fabrics; free from added flame retardants, PFAS, and PVC
Features | Remote-locking front wheel, airless all-terrain tires, independent suspension, adjustable handlebar, compact one-hand fold that stands upright, seat supports kids up to 60 lbs
Prices Starting At | $650

The Guava Roam is built like a jogging stroller but without the clunky, oversized feel that usually comes with one. We appreciate that we can use it for real runs or everyday walks and errands without feeling like we’re pushing a tank. One of the best features is the remote-locking front wheel, which lets you switch from stroll mode to run mode right from the handlebars. Add in airless tires (no flats, ever) and independent suspension, and you get a ride that’s steady and comfortable even when the terrain isn’t.

And for a jogger, it’s surprisingly compact. It folds down smaller than most and stands on its own, making it much easier to get in and out of the car. The seat reclines for on-the-go naps, supports children up to 60 pounds, and is suitable from around six months — or from birth with a car seat adapter. Material-wise, the Roam is GREENGUARD Gold Certified, while the seat fabrics and sunshade are polyester. Read our editor’s review of the Guava pack-n-play to learn more about why we love this brand so much.

Note: earlier Roam models made between 2020 and 2021 were recalled due to a brake issue. Newer models aren’t affected, but it’s worth double-checking if you’re buying secondhand.

Are The Lovevery Play Kits Worth It? (Editor Review) https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/lovevery-play-kit-review/ https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/lovevery-play-kit-review/#respond Tue, 03 Mar 2026 00:19:43 +0000 https://www.thegoodtrade.com/?p=72602 It turns out that I love the quality, safety, and thoughtfulness behind Lovevery. For us, it’s a meaningful investment in playtime that grows with our kid.

The post Are The Lovevery Play Kits Worth It? (Editor Review) appeared first on The Good Trade.

]]>
Summary: The Lovevery Play Kit has been a wonderful way to introduce developmentally intentional play into our daily routine without adding clutter to our home. I love the quality, safety, and thoughtful design behind the toys, and I genuinely think it’s a meaningful investment for families who want playtime that grows with their child.

What I Love

 • Intentional, developmentally aligned play: Lovevery focuses on toys that support real developmental milestones, so I don’t have to guess what my daughter is ready for.
 • Simple, clutter-free setup: The kit arrives with only what we need, minimal packaging, and toys that are ready to use right out of the box.
 • Durable, safe materials: The toys are built to withstand daily baby exploration, including chewing, rolling, and general eight-month-old chaos.

Things to Consider

 • Premium price point: Play Kits start around $80, so it’s an investment, though the durability and developmental focus help justify the cost.
 • Some toys take time to click: Not every item will be interesting right away — the kit is designed to grow with your child.
 • Best for curated toy households: If you prefer a minimal, intentional toy approach, the subscription model fits well. If you like having a wide variety of toys available at once, it may feel more structured.

Before having my daughter, I was adamant that our house would not be overrun with toys (said every first-time parent). Part of this was practical — we simply don’t have the space. We rent, and our two-bedroom house serves multiple purposes throughout the day as home, office, and daycare. But it’s also because I grew up with three siblings, and our grandparents loved buying us new things. As a kid, this was the dream. As an adult, though, it’s made me embrace minimalism and be very cautious about excess and clutter.

Similarly, as a new mom who works full-time and is working to rebalance my postpartum hormones, the anxiety is real. I’ve been learning that the less-is-more approach is essential for my mental health and for staying grounded throughout the day. This includes things like clothes — I don’t need more choices; I need reliable, comfortable outfits — and it’s true for our living space as well. I need less stuff, including fewer toys.

“I need less stuff, including fewer toys.”

With a bright-eyed, curious child who wants to put everything in her mouth and loves colors, sounds, and textures, it means finding toys that spark her imagination while also contributing to the clean, organized ethos of our home. Enter, Lovevery.

About Lovevery

Lovevery was founded in 2017 by mom-entrepreneur Jessica Rolph, who started the company after wondering why so many baby toys felt more decorative than helpful for real development. The company is based in Boise, Idaho (fun fact: my in-laws just moved there, and we walked past the HQ while having lunch downtown) and the brand has grown into a favorite with parents for its playkits that emphasize meaningful, science-backed play. Instead of filling homes with a lot of random toys, Lovevery focuses on creating things that actually match how children learn and explore at each stage of development (music to my ears).

“The brand has grown into a favorite with parents for its playkits that emphasize meaningful, science-backed play.”

But back to the Play Kits. You’ve probably seen them on social media, in your parent chat groups, or on Facebook Marketplace being sold secondhand. They are also popular with registries, even before having our daughter, I had heard about the subscription toy boxes. Here’s how they work:

Each kit comes with a carefully selected set of toys along with booklets that explain how to use them and why they matter at that stage of development. For example, the 0–12+ week box is designed to help newborns form new brain connections as they strengthen their vision and build body awareness. It includes sensory toys, black-and-white contrast cards, a rattle, and a few other age-appropriate items. The goal is to take the guesswork out of what a baby should play with (if you’ve ever stood in the toy aisle, you know the feeling) by offering only what children are ready to engage with — whether that’s grasping, stacking, problem-solving, or early language play. It’s a thoughtful little package that supports curiosity and development. Plus, it makes for a fun mail day.

Trying the Lovevery Playkit

I was really excited to test Lovevery out with our daughter. We kept things fairly basic and soft in her early months (aka the potato period), so receiving the kit felt like a milestone for all of us as we introduced more intentional toys and more vibrant colors. (You can start sooner — Lovevery offers kits from 0+ weeks — we just happened to begin our subscription at the seven-month mark.)

We chose the Inspector Play Kit, and it arrived the week of her seven-month birthday. The kit was described as a way to “watch your baby’s attention and focus grow as they explore nesting, stacking, and new concepts like object permanence.” The kit includes a Ball Drop Box for building gross motor skills and learning that something can exist even when you can’t see it; a set of sustainably harvested wooden balls; the “I Love You All the Time” board book, which pairs sweet reminders with rhythmic language and baby faces; “Things I See” texture cards featuring everyday objects; Nesting Stacking Drip Drop Cups for tower-building, pouring, and containment; a First Puzzle to support fine motor and problem-solving skills; a Montessori-inspired Treasure Basket; a Felt Ball Set; and Wooden Sound Cylinders for exploring similarities and differences in sound — an early skill tied to reading later on.

“The kit was described as a way to ‘watch your baby’s attention and focus grow as they explore nesting, stacking, and new concepts like object permanence.'”

Everything arrived in a small box with minimal packaging. As any parent knows, efficient and straightforward is the name of the game and opening the kit was a true no-fanfare experience. Within minutes of it arriving, I had everything opened and spread out on the floor. The included guide made it easy to understand each object’s purpose, how to introduce it, and the skills it supports. Of course, everything had to pass the mouth test first, so I let her explore (and chew) freely. The wooden balls were an immediate hit.

We were so excited that we spent a solid ten minutes playing with everything right away. She was immediately drawn to the wooden and felt balls. The round shapes and contrasting textures fascinated her, and she loved watching them roll across the floor. The nesting cups were also a quick favorite — less for stacking and more for holding and, yes, tasting. She also loved the sound cylinders, and we’ve been practicing shaking them together.

“We were so excited that we spent a solid ten minutes playing with everything right away.”

We’ve had the kit for about a month now (she turned eight months today as I write this), and I’m curious to see how her interest in the toys evolves over the coming weeks. A few items haven’t quite clicked yet. She enjoys watching me demonstrate the ball drop box, but hasn’t figured out how to do it herself. The texture cards hold her attention for about 30 seconds before heading straight to her mouth, and the first puzzle hasn’t sparked much interest so far. The basket gets used for storage and as a hat while she delivers very passionate speeches to her stuffed animals. Welcome to the babbling era.

Final thoughts: Are the Lovevery play kits worth it?

While we only tried the Inspector Play Kit, Lovevery offers kits for infants, babies, and toddlers. The range goes far beyond subscription boxes, too — from tummy time mats and play gyms to play kitchens and Montessori-style bookshelves. There are bath toys and blocks, a music set, and even a monthly book club for early readers. It doesn’t feel like just a toy company; it feels more like a hub for science-backed learning, with thoughtful resources to help parents feel equipped and confident.

“It doesn’t feel like just a toy company; it feels more like a hub for science-backed learning, with thoughtful resources to help parents feel equipped and confident.”

A few other things I appreciate: The brand prioritizes sustainability and nontoxic materials. Products are designed by experts in the United States and manufactured with partners in Asia who adhere to high sustainability and labor standards. The main facility where products are assembled and quality-checked is powered by 200,000 square feet of solar, and renewable, bio-based, and recycled materials are used whenever possible.

There’s also a preloved shop, where you can buy gently used kits or resell your own once your child has outgrown them. And for families who need additional support, Lovevery offers disability resources and customized kit options to meet children where they are developmentally.

Finally, I love how flexible the brand is with subscriptions, single purchases, and gifting. Kits start at $80, but you don’t have to commit to a subscription if you’d rather buy a Play Kit on its own. The site also makes it easy to gift a subscription to new parents or send a gift card so they can choose what works best for their family.

“Lovevery is a worthwhile investment given the quality and intentionality of its products.”

Overall, Lovevery is a worthwhile investment given the quality and intentionality of its products. Everything is designed to support my daughter’s development and help her build real skills. I appreciate that the toys are made with safe, sustainable materials and that they’re durable enough to save for future children or pass along to friends.

When you consider how much money can go toward random toys in those early years — or well-meaning gifts that don’t quite hit the mark — Lovevery just makes sense. It keeps things age-appropriate, thoughtful, and refreshingly clutter-free. We’ll definitely be trying The Explorer Play Kit when she moves into the next stage.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

I’ve personally tested and researched the top nontoxic prenatal vitamins — these are my favorites for clean, organic, gentle formulations with bioavailable ingredients. I’ve also included personal notes from my experience taking each brand.

In 2020, my husband and I decided to start trying for a baby. As a newbie to all things conception and cycle tracking (I was a former IUD girlie who had never even taken prenatals), it felt like stepping into a whole new world. I quickly found myself deep-diving into articles, podcasts, and books about fertility, nutrition, and all the ways to support a healthy pregnancy, trying to make sense of it all.

Little did we know, our journey to parenthood would be far from straightforward. It would span years of trying, fertility treatments, and eventually IVF — finally bringing us our daughter, who’s due next month. Through it all, I became an expert in my own body, as well as in the world of prenatal supplements. I learned about the importance of key ingredients like choline and CoQ10, and I became hyper-aware of fillers and additives that didn’t sit well with my body.

I tried dozens — literally dozens — of prenatal vitamins, each with its own pros and cons. Some were better for the preconception phase because they were more robust (albeit a bit harder to swallow), while others were more gentle on my stomach, especially helpful when dealing with morning sickness.

Below, I’ve shared my absolute favorite prenatal vitamins, along with why I trust and recommend these brands. I’ve also included some notes about what worked best for me during different stages — whether pre-pregnancy, during those early days of nausea, or while growing a healthy baby. And if you keep reading, we’ve consulted trusted experts to answer common questions like how to choose the best prenatal for you and how to confirm ingredient transparency — so you can feel confident in your choice, no matter where you are in your journey.

And oh, as a sidenote, men should be taking prenatals too! They’re equal parts of the equation. To learn more about why, listen to this episode of The FriedEggs Podcast (hosted by yours truly alongside one of my closest girlfriends) as we interview the founders of WeNatal about the importance of men’s fertility supplements.

How to choose the right prenatal for you:

Prenatal supplements can help bridge nutrition gaps and promote a healthy pregnancy, and they can also offer the energy pregnant people are desperate for! As the body becomes more exhausted and depleted of nutrients, prenatal vitamins can help rejuvenate and restore energy levels. Unfortunately, many prenatal vitamins on the market include subpar ingredients at suboptimal doses. Not to mention, many of them have a strong taste or are difficult to stomach, especially in the first trimester.

1. Confirm quality and transparency.

“Two major things to remember: Not all prenatals are created equally AND not all ingredients on the label are in clinically recommended dosages,” shares Ronit Menashe, cofounder of WeNatal. When choosing a prenatal vitamin, check for one that’s been third-party tested for purity and potency. Look for certifications like USP, NSF, or GMP, which show that the brand meets high standards for quality and production. Ensure the vitamins are free of common allergens like gluten, soy, and dairy and don’t contain artificial additives.

Consider a prenatal made from organic, whole food-based ingredients. These are often packed with natural vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that your body can absorb more easily than synthetic options. Plus, going organic can help reduce your exposure to synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, and other chemicals during pregnancy.

2. Consider a full dosage of essential nutrients.

When picking a prenatal vitamin, look for one that includes essential nutrients in forms your body can easily absorb and in effective amounts, such as vitamin D to reduce the risk of miscarriage, pre-eclampsia, gestational diabetes, low birth weight, and preterm birth, as well as choline (one of the most essential vitamins for a baby’s brain), and antioxidants like vitamins A, C, E, selenium, manganese, and acetyl L-carnitine.

Some prenatal vitamins are more basic and may not have a complete nutrient profile, so it’s a good idea to chat with your doctor about whether you need a complete formulation or if a simpler version will work for you. The upside to a simpler option? It’s usually cheaper, requires fewer pills, and might cause less nausea.

3. Prioritize brands that are transparent about the bioavailability of ingredients.

Look for bioavailability in the prenatal formulation, as this can affect how well your body absorbs the nutrients (i.e., you can’t absorb them if you’re peeing them out!). “High-quality prenatals use more bioavailable forms of nutrients (which is more expensive), ensuring that your body can absorb and utilize the ingredients properly,” says Menashe.

4. Talk with your doctor about forms of folate.

Folate is a necessary ingredient in prenatal vitamins to help prevent miscarriages, spinal cord injuries, and neural tube defects in babies. We recommend talking with your doctor about your specific needs amidst the ongoing discussion about the MTHFR gene variant and folic acid (synthetic folate) vs the L-methyl folate form.

5. Decide if you want iron, omega-3s, and CoQ10 included.

“Iron is a big deal for moms-to-be (your needs double during pregnancy), yet many women’s prenatals don’t contain it,” according to Menashe. Iron is essential for preventing anemia during pregnancy, but some women may find that iron causes gastrointestinal discomfort. If you opt for a prenatal with iron, look for ferrous bisglycinate (also called ferrochel), a form that is generally gentler on the stomach. Ferrochel is also more effectively absorbed and does not deactivate or block the absorption of other nutrients. We’ve noted which prenatals on this list include iron.

Omega-3s are linked to reducing the risk of preterm birth and promoting healthy gestational length. Additionally, they support the development of the baby’s heart and immune system. For mothers, omega-3s help reduce inflammation, support mood stability, and may even lower the risk of postpartum depression. Since the body can’t produce omega-3s naturally, getting them through a diet, such as fatty fish or supplements, during pregnancy is important. We’ve noted which prenatals on this list bundle in your omega-3s.

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a great addition to prenatal vitamins because it plays a vital role in energy production and antioxidant protection. During pregnancy, your body’s energy needs increase, and CoQ10 helps support healthy cellular energy levels, which can be especially beneficial for both the mother and the growing baby. It’s also a powerful antioxidant, helping to protect cells from oxidative stress, which is important for overall health during pregnancy. Some studies suggest that CoQ10 may even improve egg quality and fertility, making it a helpful nutrient for those trying to conceive. Including CoQ10 in your prenatal can give you an extra boost of energy and added protection against cell damage. We’ve noted which prenatals on this list include CoQ10.

6. Consider the form and what’s best for you (pills, powder, etc.).

Think about which form of prenatal vitamin will work best for you — pills, powders, or even a bar! If you go the pill route, consider how many pills you are comfortable taking daily; higher doses of nutrients often require multiple pills, which could be a tradeoff for reaching functional dosages. The smell and size of the pills can also impact your tolerance, especially if you are experiencing nausea or morning sickness.

7. Evaluate cost, convenience, and packaging.

Finally, consider your budget, the convenience of accessing your prenatal vitamin (whether through local stores, online subscriptions, or pharmacy delivery), and packaging sustainability. Some prenatals offer individual daily packaging, which is highly convenient but less environmentally friendly. Top brands offer monthly subscriptions and refills, making it easy to get your prenatals in the mail and on time every month. It’s worth considering the factors that can affect your consistency in taking the supplement and your overall satisfaction with the experience.

WeNatal understands that nutrient deficiencies are a big reason why couples struggle to get pregnant. The brand stands out as one of the few on the market that aligns with current clinical recommendations for choline, folate, zinc, vitamin A and vitamin D. The formula includes 24 scientifically proven ingredients (almost double compared to what’s on the market), that benefit both moms AND dads-to-be from preconception to post postpartum. That’s right: Conception is not a one-sided equation, and it shouldn’t be up to only one partner to prepare their bodies for a possible pregnancy. WeNatal serves couples with clean and science-backed formulas — the three prenatal pills for women have a whopping 400 mg of choline, and the WeNatal For Him contains 100 mcg of selenium (essential for sperm motility), among other antioxidants and nutrient-dense ingredients.

As for taste/smell, we love the mintiness and how easy these three capsules are to swallow. The microencapsulation technology protects nutrient potency, ensuring they remain stable until released in the digestive system, reducing nausea and stomach upset and providing better absorption. From beautiful packaging and travel cases to the family manifestation journal, WeNatal brings partners together and makes us feel less alone on a journey that sometimes feels isolating.

My Review | “This is easily my favorite prenatal on the market as they’ve fit functional doses of bioavailable ingredients into three pills that are super easy to swallow and come in gorgeous bottles I can store on my kitchen counter (because pregnancy brain!). I took it before, during, and after my pregnancy, and while going through IVF. I truly believe the men’s prenatal is what improved my husband’s sperm count between six months of testing, and after taking WeNatal, we were able to get two healthy embryos, which resulted in our healthy baby girl.

For a brand that literally walks us through our pre- and post-conception journey, we love Perelel, founded specifically by an OBGYN. These prenatal vitamins with bioavailable ingredients are specific to each trimester (including a men’s multi-packs) for the most effective supplements, and the colorful and counter-friendly packaging isn’t terrible to look at either. When trying Perelel for ourselves, we loved the simplicity (trying to conceive is exhausting enough) and how travel-friendly the individual packets are. We took them on the road for a weekend trip and saved so much room in our suitcase. The supplements are also a no-nausea formula, and we had no issue getting these down in the morning on an empty stomach. Our editor also loves Perelel’s postnatal vitamins for supporting healthy healing after birth. Perelel is Clean Label Project-certified ensuring it’s products are at the top percentile of purity and quality.

My Review | “I’m really impressed by these prenatals! The ingredients and formulations feel so well-tailored to my exact stage, and I love that they’re designed by OBGYNs and a top-notch medical team. The individual packets are super handy for travel, but I do wish they’d cut back on the plastic waste for everyday use.

Form | Powder & capsules

Needed prenatal wins in our book when it comes to taste and form. While the brand offers capsule supplements, we were most intrigued by the prenatal multi-powder, formulated by perinatal and nutrition experts and packed with 400 mg of choline. We blended the vanilla powder inito our morning smoothie and also tried it with nut milk (so delicious!). We also tried the ethically sourced prenatal collagen powder for extra protein dissolved in our morning coffee and couldn’t even taste it. We love that Needed — a certified B Corp — offers a wide range of supplements for all stages of conception and for men, too. The sample packets make it easy to test and try before committing to a month’s supply.

My Review | “Needed’s prenatal powder is a serious lifesaver if you can’t stomach capsules. It’s gentle on the stomach, and the vanilla flavor isn’t overly powerful. I love mixing it into a morning smoothie with additional antioxidants and adding a scoop of collagen powder as well. It’s not chalky and I hardly notice it’s even there.”

Natalist makes taking prenatal vitamins easier and more enjoyable with their chewable prenatal gummy vitamins. Long gone are the days when you plan your supplement schedule throughout the day, as these gummies pack 21 key vitamins for optimal maternal and fetal health in just three vegetarian gummies. They taste delicious, are perfect for on-the-go, and actually make us look forward to taking our prenatals. We also love the addition of DHA, as each serving includes 75 mg for optimal brain, eye, and nervous system development. At the same time, highly bioavailable MTHF folate works to protect against neural tube defects. All your essentials — and more — in just three gummies a day.

My Review | “I love that these prenatal gummies make me feel like a kid again. They are soft, chewy, and perfect for days when I just can’t stomach another vitamin in pill form. They also have DHA, which I love! (One less pill, you know?)”

5. FullWell

Clean Ingredients | Bioavailable nutrients, non-GMO, allergen-friendly
Standout Features | Developed by a registered dietician & fertility expert, monthly subscriptions, HSA/FSA eligible
Frequency & Dosage | 8 capsules per day
Form | Capsules
Price | $50 for a 30-day supply

FullWell was developed by Ayla Barmmer, a registered dietician, women’s health and fertility expert, and mama herself. What we love most about these prenatal vitamins are the stellar ingredients and the fact that the formulas are non-GMO and third-party tested. While you have to take four fairly large capsules twice a day, FullWell includes more choline, magnesium, and calcium than most prenatal vitamins on the market and ingredients in active, bioavailable forms. They are also free from allergens like soy, gluten, corn, and dairy. For us, that tradeoff is worth putting the best ingredients in our bodies to prepare for conception or during pregnancy/postpartum.

That said, these may be harder to stomach while experiencing morning sickness (the smell is fairly strong and might be off-putting if your scent is heightened) or if you have difficulty with pills. Still, it gets an A+ in our book. The monthly subscription and bundle options (the brand has fish oil, a nerve-calming tonic, and men’s prenatal) are great for saving on cost as well.

My Review | “Full transparency: the eight pills a day is a lot — and these aren’t small pills either. I am partial to this brand because of the potency and how incredible the ingredients are (worth it, IMO), but it may be difficult to stomach if you’re having nausea in the first trimester. I recommend these specifically for those going through IVF and fertility journeys, as they can be easier to take during pre-conception! And once you can handle taking pills again, this a top pick from the team!”

6. Ritual

Clean Ingredients | Bioavailable nutrients, non-GMO, vegan, gluten & major allergen-free
Standout Features | Monthly subscriptions, recycled packaging, third-party testing, traceable supply chain, eligible for FSA & HSA reimbursements
Frequency & Dosage | 2 capsules per day
Form | Capsules
Price | $44 for a 30-day supply

Ritual is more than just a leading name for natural supplements — the brand is also one of our neighbors, located in sunny SoCal. We love that these prenatals integrate a dozen clean (and fully traceable) nutrients responsibly sourced worldwide to guide us from pre- to post-pregnancy. The capsules are also vegan-friendly and free from gluten, allergens, and GMOs.

It’s important to note that Ritual’s prenatal supplement offers lower doses of several key nutrients needed during pregnancy, including just 10% of the recommended daily value of choline. If you’re experiencing dietary gaps or have significant food aversions during pregnancy, you may want to consider a more comprehensive prenatal option. Otherwise, we love this as a more budget-friendly option and that you can choose from citrus or mint and allow yourself to smile while taking just two (yes, two!) golden capsules.

My Review | “I’ve been taking Ritual on and off for the past few years of my fertility journey and, I have to say, it’s one of the easier prenatals on my stomach! I love that it’s only two pills and that it comes in a minty or citrusy flavor. While it lacks a few of the ingredients I prefer from other brands, it’s a great budget option, and the subscription model with fast shipping makes it easy to restock.”

If you struggle with taking multiple prenatal vitamins daily — we hear you — and so does Tend Prenatal. Founded by Hannah and Behzad Varamini, they were inspired to create an easy-to-take prenatal after Hannah struggled with swallowing pills throughout her whole life. And so, the Tend bars were born! These snackable prenatals contain 25 essential nutrients, all from organic whole foods, and with zero synthetic vitamins, minerals, or fillers (and it’s vegan). You’ll get a whopping 4000 IU of vitamin D, 105 mg of choline, 700 mcg of folate, and even more in each bar. Best of all, you only need one bar a day! Choose from flavors like lemon berry, chocolate sea salt, strawberry patch, and chocolate peanut butter, or get the variety pack to taste all four.

My Review | “OMG! A pregnancy without a million horse pills? I rejoiced when I learned of these bars. They’re delicious (of course, the chocolate is my favorite) and pack all the nutrients needed for prenatal support.”

Seeking Health carries a number of prenatal supplements in capsules and powders, but our favorite is the Optimal Prenatal Capsules for its five-star ingredients, including 800 mcg of folate and 250 mg of choline. Suitable for vegetarians and free from allergens and GMOs, these capsules contain all of the bioavailable nutrients our bodies (and future babies!) need for healthy development and pregnancy. Again, this one requires four capsules twice a day (a big ask, we know!), but the smell and taste are fairly subtle. The best ingredients that are relatively easy to consume — a win-win!

My Review | “Another brand we both love and dread (eight pills, gah!). The ingredients are some of the best, though, and we are grateful for how gentle it is on our stomachs, despite the horse-sized pills.”

For the most affordable option on our list, we turn to Garden of Life, a company that has been around since 2000. The Vitamin Code Raw Prenatal is a comprehensive whole-food multi-nutrient formula specifically formulated to meet the unique needs of women during pre-conception, pregnancy and lactation. With over 20 powdered organically grown fruits and vegetables, it offers the nourishment to support us and our developing baby. We especially love that this specific formula is free from synthetic binders or fillers, artificial flavors, sweeteners, or additives commonly used in tablets. If you’d prefer tablets, the prenatal once daily is another affordable option. It is USDA organic, tummy-friendly, and includes fruits, vegetables, and herbs in its formulation.

My Review | “For the most affordable option, these are a great choice for a daily prenatal, especially since it’s only three pills a day!”

Why Should You Consider Organic Prenatals?

When it comes to supporting your growing baby (and your own body!), every little choice matters—including the prenatal vitamins you choose. Organic prenatals can be a smart way to reduce your exposure to synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and genetically modified ingredients, which often show up in conventional supplements. In fact, the International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) has flagged concerns about toxic chemicals in some prenatal vitamins, noting that they can have long-lasting effects on both mom and baby. By choosing organic, you’re opting for vitamins that meet higher purity standards and often undergo extra testing for things like heavy metals. While organic doesn’t automatically mean perfect, it’s a step in the right direction for mamas-to-be who want to be a little more mindful. At the end of the day, it’s about giving your baby the best start possible, while also taking care of yourself.

What Are the Relevant Certifications for Prenatals?

With so many prenatal vitamins on the market, those tiny certification symbols can actually tell you a lot! In the U.S., the FDA doesn’t pre-approve dietary supplements the same way it does for prescription meds, so third-party certifications are key to knowing what you’re really getting. Look for the USP Verified seal, which confirms your vitamins meet strict standards for quality and purity. There’s also NSF International, which makes sure supplements actually contain what’s on the label (no sketchy fillers here!). And if you see a GMP Certified mark, that means the vitamins are made in a facility that follows strict safety and quality practices. These certifications can give you that extra peace of mind, especially when you’re already navigating a million pregnancy decisions.

When Should You Start Taking Prenatals?

Here’s a pro tip that’s often overlooked: You should start taking prenatal vitamins before you’re even pregnant. Experts recommend starting them at least one to three months before you start trying to conceive, because nutrients like folic acid are essential for your baby’s development in those very first weeks (before most women even know they’re pregnant!).

Dr. Natalie Crawford, MD, a fertility doctor in Austin, Texas, and host of the “As a Woman” podcast explains that we are born with a (metaphorical) “vault” of all the eggs we’ll ever have in our ovaries. Each month, a few of these eggs leave the ovary, with just one of that group eventually ovulating. “However, the entire process of folliculogenesis [creating a follicle] takes three months,” says Dr. Crawford. “I like to explain this as: Your eggs are starting to be selected three months prior to when they are the group available to grow and ovulate. This represents a time when our eggs are likely more sensitive to the world around us, and setting a good foundation with your lifestyle can be beneficial.”

Dr. Crawford continues, “The rule for preconception is starting folic acid three months before you conceive. Since folic acid is essential in fetal development, specifically the development of the brain and spinal cord, starting folic acid before conception is crucial to avoid birth defects.” The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) suggests aiming for at least 400 micrograms of folic acid daily during this time, as it helps prevent neural tube defects.

Beyond folic acid, prenatal vitamins are packed in with other essentials like iron, calcium, and DHA to help keep you and your baby healthy. According to the Cleveland Clinic, getting a head start on prenatal vitamins helps your body be pregnancy-ready when the time is right. So think of it as your first little act of love, long before you’re sharing baby kicks and nursery plans.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We’re not just editors, we’re also moms. After reviewing clean mattresses for a decade in our family homes, these are our top selections for a nontoxic and organic baby mattress.

Babies under a year old sleep a lot — upwards of 12–16 hours a day. This sleep is critical in supporting both their cognitive and physical growth. But how much thought do you give to what they’re sleeping on? Traditionally, crib mattresses are made of or topped with polyurethane foam, which comes from petroleum, and they often contain potentially dangerous fire retardants. Plus, crib mattresses’ vinyl linings can emit harmful phthalates. Yuck.

Below, we discuss the essentials of organic crib mattresses and round up the best healthy crib mattresses on the market. Read on to learn more. 👶

Why are organic and nontoxic crib mattresses important?

Natural or organic mattresses reduce exposure to harmful chemicals commonly found in conventional mattresses. They can also be resistant to allergens, and offer durability through high-quality materials. These mattresses are often made with natural materials like organic cotton or wool, promoting better air quality and a safer sleeping environment for babies.

Let’s talk about potentially harmful chemicals. You know that weird smell when you first open something from a factory, like a mattress? That’s called off-gassing, and polyurethane foam is known for it. What you’re smelling are volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, and according to the American Lung Association they can be harmful in high amounts. In general, the less synthetic a mattress is, the less VOCs it emits. Crib mattresses are also often lined in vinyl — great for its waterproofing ability, sure, but not so great since it emits phthalates, chemicals linked to harmful health effects like disrupting your endocrine system.

“We know these flame retardants are hazardous…the fact that you found these chemicals in crib mattresses is evidence of an ongoing problem that we as a nation have been unwilling to confront.”

-Dr. Jerome Paulson, pediatrician

Since mattresses must contain flame retardants to meet government flammability standards, many companies use synthetic ones like boric acid, PBDEs, and antimony trioxide. Children are most vulnerable to the potential toxic effects of these synthetic chemicals because they’re still developing, according to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Dr. Jerome Paulson, a George Washington University pediatrician, stated in the Chicago Tribune: “We know these flame retardants are hazardous…the fact that you found these chemicals in crib mattresses is evidence of an ongoing problem that we as a nation have been unwilling to confront.”

What should you look for when purchasing organic crib mattresses?

Alright, so we’ve gone over how some crib mattresses can be less than ideal for a baby’s health. So how do you shop for a better option? Your best bet is to look for third-party certifications that indicate product safety. The following are the ones we look for when it comes to organic crib mattresses:

 • GOLS Certified (Global Organic Latex Standard): This certification ensures that the latex in your crib mattress contains more than 95% certified organic raw material. Stringent environmental and social criteria must also be met throughout the product’s supply chain in order to be certified.
 • GOTS Certified (Global Organic Textile Standard): In order to receive a GOTS certification, 95% of a product’s materials must be certified organic. This certification is the gold standard for organic cotton, wool, and other textile components. They also monitor strict worker protections that ban exposure to toxic chemicals and child or forced labor.
 • GREENGUARD Certified: A crib mattress with this certification ensures the product won’t emit VOCs at a harmful level. GREENGUARD’s standards is one of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive for ensuring the lowest emissions and off-gassing.
 • OEKO-TEX Certified: A crib mattress with this certification means it’s free of 100 commonly used toxic substances and allergens (from raw materials to final product).
 • MADE SAFE: This nontoxic certification requires your crib mattress to validate that over 6,500 substances on the banned and restricted list have been avoided or constrained.
 • USDA Certified Organic: This seal guarantees that the raw materials used in your crib mattress, such as cotton or wool, are at least 95% organic. However, unlike GOTS certification, it does not account for chemicals used during production or certify the entire mattress.

Our criteria:

There are a lot of organic crib mattress brands on the market — from niche organic cotton crib mattress brands to affordable organic baby mattress lines from larger manufacturers — so we’ve selected the best sustainable brands making nontoxic crib mattresses for your little ones using the criteria below. We regularly update this list with emerging standouts.

 • ORGANIC | Each brand’s mattresses are made of natural or recycled materials like cotton, wool, latex, and recycled or clean polymers that meet third-party specs. We also look for brands that are PFAS-free.
 • SAFETY & CERTIFICATIONS | Each brand features third-party certifications like GOLS, GOTS, and USDA Certified Organic to guarantee your little one’s safety. We’ve vetted these brands to make sure they never contain harmful substances found in traditional mattresses.
 • FIRMNESS | Every mattress is firm to give your baby a safer sleeping experience and to reduce the risk of SIDS.
 • PRICE | While we’ve selected mattresses across a range of price points, they’re all high quality and long-lasting.

What are common harmful substances found in crib mattresses?

While you can find more affordable crib mattresses than the options on this list, it’s important to recognize that not all crib mattresses are created equal. Most conventional crib mattresses available online and in-store contain harmful substances that impact your home’s air quality and most importantly, your baby’s health with chronic, long-term exposure. Here are a few to look out for:

 • Polyurethane is a commonly used foam in mattresses, but it can release VOCs through off-gassing. (That new mattress smell? It might be the polyurethane!) This can cause respiratory irritation and headaches.
 • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are gasses emitted from certain solids or liquids, including many synthetic materials used in mattresses. (They’re also common in paints!) VOCs have health impacts ranging from mild irritation and nausea to liver, kidney, and central nervous system damage. Some VOCs are even known carcinogens.
 • Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals used in some mattresses and furniture for their water and stain-resistant properties. Research on these “forever chemicals” by the CDC and the EPA has linked PFAS to conditions such as liver damage, thyroid disease, obesity, hormone suppression, and cancer.
 • Chemical flame retardants, like brominated or halogenated flame retardants, are added to mattresses to ensure they meet fire safety standards. These flame retardants have been linked to health issues such as endocrine disruption, neurodevelopmental issues, and cancer, especially in vulnerable populations like infants or the elderly.
 • Fiberglass is used in some mattresses as an inexpensive flame retardant, but fiberglass fibers can be released into the air and environment if the mattress cover is removed or torn. Aside from short-term irritationchronic inhalation of fiberglass can worsen respiratory conditions like asthma or bronchitis.

What You Can Learn By Watching Your Child Play https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/what-is-play-therapy/ https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/what-is-play-therapy/#respond Tue, 24 Feb 2026 07:40:03 +0000 Our editor participated in a weekend training on play therapy — here's what she learned.

The post What You Can Learn By Watching Your Child Play appeared first on The Good Trade.

]]>
I’m not sure what I was picturing when I thought of play therapy before I participated in Dr. Jodi Mullen’s training — but everything I learned and experienced over the course of those two days inspired and taught me more than I thought was possible.

“I can safely say that there is so much depth and richness in working with children, especially once you learn to speak their language.”

As a training clinician in the first year of my MSW and my very first internship at a mental health clinic, I didn’t have very much background on working with children, and I have long understood myself to be more comfortable working with adults. However, when the opportunity came up at the clinic where I intern to train alongside other interns and experienced clinicians with a play therapy and sand tray therapy expert, I was intrigued to say the least. We spent two days learning in-depth theory, practicing clinical technique, and even engaging in some sand tray play ourselves. Now, I can safely say that there is so much depth and richness in working with children, especially once you learn to speak their language.

In psychoanalytic theory, which is where all therapy (both child and adult) got its start, free association and language are the ultimate keys to the momentum of progress. Free association is the therapeutic practice of allowing the patient to ramble and speak freely, connecting random thoughts, stories, feelings, and memories as tightly or loosely related as they may be. In psychoanalysis, this is how we make discoveries, connect to ourselves and our emotions, and better understand our experiences. One might assume, as I did, that the more eloquent a patient is, the more attuned they can be to the process of free association. However, what I lacked, and have since gained, is the ability to ask the simple question: What do we mean by “language?”

While words are the language of adults, play is the language of kids. It’s not just how they occupy themselves — it’s a form of self-expression for them. And in order for that self-expression to be as authentic as possible, kids need to feel safe and supported.

“While words are the language of adults, play is the language of kids.”

Psychoanalysts Melanie Klein and Anna Freud, despite major ideological clashes, were both pioneers of child analysis through play. Klein posited that using play and toys in child therapy could very directly mirror the adult process of verbal free association by revealing unconscious fantasies, anxieties, and conflicts. Anna Freud, on the other hand, was more beholden to the original stages of development and saw play as a rapport-building mechanism, focusing more on establishing and exploring relationships.

We can see these opposing foundational views come together in how play therapy and sand tray therapy — a form of play therapy that uses a sandbox, toy figures, and sometimes water — are practiced today. One of my major takeaways from training with Dr. Mullen is that both in play therapy (as well as regular play), the therapeutic aspect manifests in two parts: The play itself, and the trust you build with the patient.

“What makes play therapy a powerful experience of healing and growth is that play therapists are trained in the language of children; play, ” says Dr. Mullens. “Children are able to communicate in their natural language and are not limited to the verbal-based, left-brained, adult-centric ways of therapy. Additionally, it is not what the play therapist does, but who they are. The benefits of play therapy require play therapists to create the neuroception of safety.”

“Just like how active listening can open up avenues for adults to communicate with one another beyond a therapeutic setting, so too can we listen to the way children play.”

If we follow the line of thinking that play is the language of children, they are expressing themselves whenever they play, not just when they’re in front of a clinician. Just like how adults use language to convey meaning all the time. It would be silly to assume that the only words that mean something are the ones you say to your therapist. Dr. Mullen says about this, “If we understand as parents the importance and value of play and recognize that through play, children show us their perspective, we can be more attuned to our children and their way of seeing the world.” Just like how active listening can open up avenues for adults to communicate with one another beyond a therapeutic setting, so too can we listen to the way children play.

Her book, “Freakishly Well-Behaved Kids” goes further in-depth about this very principle: Learning about the child’s perspective, the way that they see and conceptualize their lives and environments, can be revolutionary to understanding them as whole people. How, then, from a child-centered lens, do we use play to learn about our own children and the children in our lives? While play therapy is practiced in a specific environment with a clinician and is very distinct from the act of playing with one’s own children, there are parts of the therapeutic practice that can be helpful to bring home.

Being fully present with your child and allowing yourself to observe without judgment or fear is a huge piece of the puzzle. While interpretation is part of the clinical foundation, my intuition is that, as a parent, digging too deeply into symbolism and interpretation isn’t nearly as important as noticing how they play. What emotions manifest for them? What themes do they gravitate towards repeatedly? Do they prefer to play alone or involve others? For example, if your child is incredibly selective about the toys they choose and sees the selection of toys as a key part of play, that might give you some insight into how they think about their surroundings. Especially from the parenting angle as opposed to a clinical one, it can be intuitive. Simply noticing what they notice and how they move about their world can be very transformative.

“Digging too deeply into symbolism and interpretation isn’t nearly as important as noticing how they play.”

One of the details that I found the most fascinating about training with Dr. Mullen was the revelation that while play is the language of children, adults can use the language of play, too. We did, of course, all speak it at one point. Play might even be described as our mother tongue, even if it has been forgotten over time. When I asked her what makes someone a good candidate for play therapy or sand tray therapy, she responded, “I am biased here, I think all children and adults benefit from ways of communicating that are not verbally-based, and neuroscience backs this up. Play and sand play therapy are well-suited to children developmentally. It is also well-suited to traumatized people of any age, people with expressive language challenges, and to any or all of us who, on occasion, cannot find the words to express our lived experiences with heartbreak, anxiety, grief, etc.”

As play therapy is all about using toys and play to express oneself freely and process emotions, traumas, and changes free from directives, it can serve different purposes for different people. For children, it can meet them where they’re at. For adults, it can allow for a brand-new way of understanding and conceptualizing your experiences.

Sometimes, when the language we are used to trying time and time again leads us in circles, it can be freeing to express things in a new and unexpected way. It can even lead to new insights and reflections. While play therapy is mostly utilized in a clinical setting for children, adults can benefit immensely from play therapy, and from play in general! That being said, it seems to me that one of the best ways to learn your child’s language of play is to do so experientially from time to time. Not just as an observer of play, but as a participant.

“When the language we are used to trying time and time again leads us in circles, it can be freeing to express things in a new and unexpected way.”

Try engaging in an observant and mindful experience while playing with your child, noticing the dynamics, themes, and ideas that emerge. Maybe even experimenting with play on your own to gain a new perspective. It might feel silly to play with toys on your own as an adult at first, but having experienced it firsthand, I would describe it as an amazing reflective exercise, maybe even a little like journaling. It’s not always easy, either. Tough stuff can come up, just like with any process of self-exploration.

From a play therapy lens, there is so much that you can learn about your child — and yourself! — with the art of play. Learning about yourself can open up new ways of understanding your child, and learning about your child can open up new ideas about how you understand yourself.

And through a combination of cultivating a safe space for kids to express and be themselves, and noticing them with care and presence, you can make space for so much processing, development, trust, and learning.

When flu and cold season hits, we like to use natural ways to boost our immune systems. These are our favorite supplements for keeping you and your family healthy and protected.

A robust immune system offers us complex and multifaceted protection against a host of unavoidable exposures to pathogens. The more tuned up your immune system, the more natural protection and fighting power you gain against illness-causing germs and toxins that wreak havoc on your health. But stress, seasonal weather changes, gut health, and a host of other factors can influence the strength and ability of our natural immune defenses, challenging its power and protection. If your body is out of balance or overloaded at the moment — or if you feel yourself coming down with something — supporting your natural immunity with immune-boosting supplements makes a whole lot of sense.

Immune support supplements can reinforce and optimize your body’s natural defenses against outside threats in many ways. These include increasing your intake of vitamins and nutrients that are used by your immune system to function, reducing the length of time of illness when already sick, and fortifying the barriers and linings the body uses to keep the “ick” out in the first place. Many immune support supplements are safe for any age, offering a bubble of protection and immune fortification for the entire family, even against the toughest school and work party germs! (Plus, we’ve even included an option formulated just for kids.)

What ingredients should you look for in immune support supplements?

While the effectiveness of some immune support supplements can be controversial, we do know certain ingredients are proven to be effective in supporting not just the immune system but overall health so the immune system can stay functional and focused. Since our immune system has both an innate and an adaptive capacity, we want to be sure we are well-rounded in our approach. When seeking an immune support supplement, you want to be sure you are supporting it with some or all of the following proven ingredients:

 • Vitamin C: Vitamin C is crucial to the proper function of the immune response system. It helps B cells differentiate and produce antibodies that neutralize threats like bacteria and viruses. Vitamin C also enhances the process in which a cell destroys invading microorganisms and is essential to maintaining the epithelial barrier, which protects us against pathogens entering the bloodstream.
 • Elderberry: Elderberry extract is effective in blocking influenza A, influenza B, and H1N1 viruses. It contains flavonoids that are said to reduce inflammation and protect cells. It can be taken as a preventative but taking it at symptom onset can also shorten the duration of an illness. This is also safe to be taken at any age, for long periods of time with no risk or adverse effects.
 • Zinc: Zinc is used in the development and function of T-cells, which are responsible for moderating the body’s inflammatory response during times of immune stress.
 • Vitamin D: Maintaining adequate levels of Vitamin D improves immune health and decreases susceptibility to autoimmune diseases. Vitamin D also helps regulate the adaptive immune system.
 • Colostrum: Colostrum is a protein and nutrient-rich liquid produced by mammals after birth. Not only does it help sustain a newborn and ward off infection, but research shows that when taken through all stages of life, it helps maintain and enhance mucosal lining on your skin, lungs, and gut barriers. Most colostrum supplements are sourced from cows and contain immunoglobulins and antibodies that interact with immune cells in the gut to trigger a beneficial immune response. Just note that colostrum is not dairy-free!

Summary: WeNatal supported me through every stage of my fertility journey, from infertility and IVF to pregnancy and postpartum. I relied on their supplements during egg retrievals and embryo transfers, continued throughout pregnancy as my body changed, and still use them to support my recovery after birth.

What I Love:

 • Ingredients I trust, backed by science: The formulas are built around research-supported nutrients chosen to support real egg and sperm health. After a few months, my AMH increased, and my husband’s semen analysis improved, which gave us measurable confidence going into IVF.
 • Supports both partners: It’s rare to find supplements made for him and for her, and having supplements to support both of us in our fertility journey helped unify our experience and bring us together.
 • Subscription convenience: With auto-refills, I never missed a dose during fertility treatment, pregnancy, or postpartum — one less thing to think about!
 • Calm, beautiful, and sustainable packaging: The first order includes glass jars, and subsequent orders arrive in refill packets. The packaging makes taking supplements (especially during something as stressful as IVF) a simpler and more organized experience. Plus, I don’t mind storing them in plain sight!

Things To Note:

 • WeNatal is more expensive than drugstore prenatals, but I saw it as a crucial investment, especially given everything we were already spending on fertility treatments. For me, it was part of my IVF journey — if I was going through all of that, I needed supplements I could trust to actually support my body. On top of that, it felt great knowing I was supporting a small business that values ethics, sustainability, and science first.

I’m no stranger to the world of supplements, especially those marketed for fertility. After four years of trying to conceive and two rounds of IVF before welcoming our daughter last summer, I’ve tried quite possibly every product formulated for reproductive support. And if time in the fertility space teaches you anything quickly, it’s that not all supplements are created equal.

My husband and I had a diagnosis of unexplained infertility, which means tests didn’t show a clear problem, but we weren’t able to get pregnant. My labs fell within “normal” ranges, and his semen analysis was labeled as “fine.” Our doctors weren’t sure whether the issue was egg quality, sperm quality, or both.

Our first IVF cycle made it clear that something was wrong. I went into retrieval with 18 follicles, but only nine eggs were collected. Just three were mature enough to attempt fertilization, and only one fertilized normally. That embryo stopped developing within 24 hours.

After that failed cycle, my husband and I stepped back from treatment. We needed space — physically and emotionally — and we used that time to consult new doctors and explore different approaches. During that pause, we discovered WeNatal.

WeNatal is a Los Angeles–based fertility brand founded by Vida Delrahim and Ronit Menashe, born from their own experiences with pregnancy loss. Doctor-formulated and third-party tested, the line focuses on bioavailable, clinically informed nutrients to support reproductive and maternal health for both partners.

We both started the prenatal vitamins (one formulated for him, one for her), and I added Egg Quality+. It was the first time we had a shared supplement plan that felt intentional rather than scattered. It was also the first time my supplements made me feel calm rather than stressed. It may sound trivial, but when you’re doing fertility treatments and have dozens of pill bottles, medications, and medical supplies, it can be overwhelming. WeNatal’s simple, streamlined packaging made a small but meaningful difference.

A table lists five nutrients, their dosages, and benefits for egg health, including CoQ10, N-Acetyl L-Cysteine, Alpha Lipoic Acid, Acetyl L-Carnitine, and PQQ.

A few months later, my husband repeated his semen analysis in preparation for another round of IVF, and the results showed a clear improvement. My AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone), a marker used to estimate egg reserve, also increased, which surprised even my doctors. For the first time since starting treatment, we saw a measurable improvement, which gave us renewed hope.

Our subsequent IVF retrieval led to two chromosomally normal embryos, and one of those embryos became our now seven-month-old daughter.

I don’t see supplements as a cure or a shortcut, but they were an essential part of the foundation that supported us through that chapter. I genuinely believe WeNatal played a meaningful role in our fertility journey — which is why I continued the prenatal throughout pregnancy and added the magnesium and omega for extra support. Now, postpartum, I rely on Prenatal Protein+ to nourish my body as I return to HIIT workouts and adjust to life as a mom. As my husband and I prepare for another egg retrieval this year, these are the supplements we’ll continue to rely on.

Whether you’re navigating fertility challenges or simply looking for high-quality supplements to support hormones and overall wellness, WeNatal offers thoughtful, science-backed options.

Below, I’ve outlined each product in the line: What it’s formulated to support, how it felt to take, and the stages of life where I found it most useful.

WeNatal Prenatal

What I love most about WeNatal For Her is how it actually worked for me. My AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone) — a key marker of egg reserve — improved after a few months on the supplements, giving me measurable confidence going into our next IVF cycle. The formula includes 24 carefully chosen nutrients — methylated folate, choline, zinc, vitamin A, vitamin D, and antioxidants — which are all critical for egg quality, hormone balance, and reproductive health. Taking these in advance of trying to conceive or undergoing fertility treatments gives your body a head start, and they continue to support you throughout pregnancy.

My favorite part is how they are just three capsules a day. As I mentioned above, I’ve tried just about every prenatal out there, and some of them are legit horse pills, or require 8+ daily pills, or they smell awful. WeNatal pills are small in size and are gentle enough that I often took them on an empty stomach (even in the first trimester!). The subscription model also reduced the mental load during an already overwhelming season. This was especially important once the pregnancy brain kicked in.

WeNatal Men’s Prenatal

Say it with me: men need to take prenatals, too! When we started WeNatal, it wasn’t just me; my husband joined the journey with WeNatal For Him, and it changed how we approached fertility as a team. This formula isn’t just a basic multivitamin — it’s packed with nutrients known to support sperm count, motility, morphology, and overall reproductive health, including zinc, methylfolate, selenium, CoQ10, NAC, and vitamins A, C, D, and E. These antioxidants help protect sperm from oxidative stress and support key processes involved in sperm production and function, which typically take about 80 days to cycle through and improve. Men, take your prenatals!!

EggQuality Support

My favorite supplement from WeNatal (second to the magnesium) is this dark horse of a formula: Egg Quality+. I started taking it specifically in preparation for another round of IVF, and I stand behind this being one of the reasons why we have our daughter today. This formula is designed to support egg health at the cellular level, with a blend of antioxidants and amino acids that help mitochondria function and protect eggs from oxidative stress. Key ingredients such as CoQ10, NAC, alpha-lipoic acid, acetyl-L-carnitine, and PQQ work together to support cellular energy production, which can influence everything from ovulation to the developmental potential of embryos.

According to the brand, it’s best to start Egg Quality+ about three months before trying to conceive, as that’s roughly how long it takes an egg to mature. Like the prenatal, the pills are small and easy to swallow, with no lingering taste. They come with their own glass jar, and then subscription refills come in a pouch each month.

Rest + Digest

After I got pregnant, I added WeNatal’s Rest + Digest to my routine (though it’s also great to take before or after pregnancy). I slept terribly in my first trimester and then struggled with sciatica and restless leg syndrome for the rest of my pregnancy, so this became essential for survival. It’s melatonin-free and combines four highly absorbable forms of magnesium — magnesium glycinate, malate, citrate, and gluconate. I still take it in the evenings postpartum to relax, sleep deeply, and maintain smooth digestion. My only complaint? I constantly have to fight my husband over it because we only have one subscription. Clearly, we need to double up! It’s that good.

Omega DHA+ Fish Oil

Fish oil is one of those supplements where it’s like, do I actually need this? But then you take it and realize it’s doing wonders. WeNatal’s Omega DHA+ is just two softgels a day that provide a research-backed dose of omega-3s — 600 mg of DHA plus supporting EPA and DPA — essential for fetal brain and eye development. Omega-3s also support mood, inflammation balance, and maternal wellness during pregnancy and postpartum.

As for fishy burps or taste? I haven’t experienced either, and I’ve tried many fish oils. I also loved that it’s third-party tested for purity and mercury-free, which gave me real peace of mind throughout pregnancy.

Prenatal Protein+

I only started taking WeNatal Prenatal Protein+ postpartum — it wasn’t around when I was pregnant or going through IVF — but it’s quickly become essential for both my husband and me (there’s a version for him too!). As I’ve returned to the gym and focused on my fitness goals, this protein powder has been an easy, nourishing way to support recovery, energy, and overall wellness. Each scoop delivers 20 grams of protein, plus collagen and a complete prenatal nutrient profile, and the formula for him includes zinc, selenium, and CoQ10 to support fertility and recovery. While pricier than other protein powders, it’s the first complete 3-in-1 protein, collagen, and prenatal supplement on the market, so it saves me from having to buy other supplements.

As for the flavor, it’s rich but so delicious. I love adding it to smoothies during the day, mixing it into yogurt at night for a sweet treat, or stirring it into oatmeal on chilly mornings. It’s become an easy way to get in protein while balancing life as a new mom. There is also a prenatal protein designed specifically for him!

A diaper bag is destined to become your daily companion once your baby arrives — thankfully, today’s designs are as chic as they are sustainable. Crafted from safe materials and thoughtfully designed to withstand daily wear and tear, these bags prove that practicality and style can go hand in hand. Our editors have carefully reviewed top brands to help you find the perfect option for your growing family, so you can carry your essentials confidently and comfortably wherever the day (and your little one) takes you!

What features should I look for in a diaper bag?

When searching for the perfect diaper bag, consider more than just its appearance. Look for designs made with eco-friendly materials that align with your values and can keep up with daily adventures. Prioritize spacious pockets, easy-to-clean linings, and padded straps that stay comfortable during long outings. Gender-neutral styles can also be helpful if multiple caregivers share the bag. We’re especially fond of features like insulated bottle pockets, dedicated compartments for pacifiers and snacks, and durable, wipeable fabrics that stand up to everyday spills and sticky fingers.

Why choose a diaper bag made with sustainable materials?

Opting for a diaper bag crafted from sustainable materials is a simple yet powerful way to support a healthier planet for your family’s future. These eco-friendly bags are often made from recycled or renewable resources, reducing the environmental footprint of your daily routines. Choosing a sustainably made diaper bag also helps promote responsible manufacturing practices, ensuring your essentials are carried with care for your baby and the world they’ll inherit.
