The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

Our team of editors has spent the last twelve years testing the best non toxic mattresses across price points. These are our top selections in 2026.

We spend nearly a third of our lives sleeping — and there’s no better place to invest in our well-being! 😴

Over the last decade, our editorial team has reviewed dozens of organic and non toxic mattresses in our own homes and with our own families. In addition to hands-on testing, we regularly tour mattress factories in person, investigate proper certification and material use, interview the brands’ leadership teams, scour online reviews, and annually survey our audience for up-to-date consumer preferences.

Why choose an organic mattress?

Organic mattresses use certified organic materials, including natural wool, latex, and cotton. They avoid the risks of harmful substances that may harm immunity, hormone health, and the nervous system. “Repeated exposure to harmful chemicals in some traditional mattresses can impact your health, starting with how well you sleep. Some of these chemicals can contribute to symptoms including skin and respiratory irritation, hormone disruption, effects on your nervous system, and even impaired immune function,” emphasizes Dr. Jaclyn Tolentino. Having a safer sleep environment is especially important to vulnerable sleepers like young children, as 2025 research published in the journal Environmental Science and Technology shows.

Organic materials and production practices also ensure a more eco-friendly environmental impact. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the primary global body that governs a rigorous certification process for organic fibers, but we’ve outlined all the relevant organic certifications. While many companies may use words like “natural” and ”organic” as unfounded marketing terms, less than 2% of mattresses on the market actually receive organic certifications.

What does “non toxic” actually mean?

You’ll often find brands touting the use of non toxic materials — but that doesn’t actually promise us anything. This is a form of greenwashing, which, as clean living expert Lindsay Dahl explains in her book Cleaning House, is a marketing tactic brands use to persuade customers that the product is safe for their homes.

“‘Nature-made’ or ‘non toxic’ or ‘clean’ doesn’t mean that any criteria were met for quality or safety,” writes Dahl. “It’s simply language that makes the customer think that the product is harmless and good for them.”

Instead, what’s most important is the certifications behind the claims, like GOTS, GOLS, and UL GREENGUARD Gold, and many more listed below, that are verified by third party testing and review. So, while “non toxic” isn’t inherently a bad word or descriptor, it’s not enough to guarantee that the mattress you buy is truly sustainable or organic.

What is our review process?

10 testers

90+ nights tested per mattress

3 sleep experts

6 factory tours

1,600 the good trade readers surveyed

Each mattress on this list has been individually reviewed by one of our editors. Unlike other review sites, we don’t order mattresses to a showroom; we actually bring these beds into our homes and sleep on them for months (or years!) to test long-term comfort and durability. Our top considerations are health and safety, comfort, environmental impact, durability, and long-term value. In addition to hands-on testing, we regularly tour mattress factories, investigate certifications, interview brands, scour online reviews, and survey our own readers for your preferences.

Rest assured, every non toxic mattress on this list has received rigorous certifications for safety and eco-friendly production and has been tested firsthand by one or more of our editors. This guide has also been medically reviewed by Dr. Jaclyn Tolentino, a board-certified family physician.

Our criteria:

  • ORGANIC CERTIFICATIONS | Every mattress on this list has received rigorous certifications for safe materials and eco-friendly production; each brand’s specific certifications are listed in the icon section above their feature. None of the mattresses on this list contain harsh flame retardants, and all are free from toxic chemicals, PFAS, VOCs, and fiberglass.
  • COMFORT | Comfort is key, so we try each mattress ourselves, spend hours scouring online reviews, and represent all the feedback from our readers that we collect through surveys, comments, and emails. The brands on this list are here because they are organic and people love to sleep on them.
  • AFFORDABLE | Every brand on this list sells directly to the consumer online and ships the mattress to your home, removing retail costs and reducing the final price. We’ve provided a range of options, from budget to luxury, without compromising safety.
  • ECO-FRIENDLY & GIVE BACK | All of the brands on this list employ eco-friendly production practices that help reduce water pollution, sequester carbon in the soil, and support biodiversity. Many of these companies also give back to their communities by donating high-quality organic mattresses to housing shelters and families in need.

Avocado stands out as one of the best organic mattresses thanks to its certified materials, comfort, and transparency — and it’s our editors’ top pick. It’s the kind of grown-up purchase that’s truly transformed our sleep, with noticeably better rest (and improved sleep scores) across our team.

Co-founders Alex and Jeff D’Andrea couldn’t find an affordable, safe, and truly non toxic mattress for their family — one free from petroleum-based polyurethane foams, toxic flame retardants, chemical adhesives, and off-gassing VOCs. In a marketplace filled with greenwashing and white-labeled beds, Avocado stands apart by owning its entire supply chain while meeting the most rigorous standards for health and sustainability. Each organic mattress is handmade in California using GOTS-certified organic cotton and wool from India, and GOLS-certified organic latex from India and Guatemala. Some premium models even include plush FSC-certified Pure Talalay latex. Every Avocado mattress is GREENGUARD Gold Certified for low emissions and built for a wide range of sleepers — from side to stomach to back.

The brand also offers a vegan-certified mattress, an organic cotton mattress protector, a waterproof mattress protector, and a wide range of sustainably made solid wood furniture. As a member of 1% for the Planet, Avocado gives back to environmental and social nonprofits, is a Certified B Corporation, and is Climate Neutral Certified. Our editors have personally reviewed the flagship mattress, the luxurious plush mattress, the budget-friendly Eco Organic mattress, and the popular Eco Organic Kids Mattress.

This year, our team of editors visited the Avocado mattress facility in Fullerton, CA, where we joined the co-CEO of Avocado Green Brands, Vy Nguyen, for a tour to see how these mattresses get made. We also saw a demo of hand needle-tufting, where long steel needles thread cotton straps through the mattress to secure the layers in place without glue. It’s a highly skilled, time-intensive process that keeps natural materials from shifting and improves durability.

Kayti Christian has long brown hair and bangs, wearing a black turtleneck and hoop earrings, smiles softly in front of a plain background.

Our Editor’s Review of Avocado

“I tested Avocado’s Pillow-Top mattress (featuring a Euro-style button-tufted pillow top) since my husband and I are both side sleepers. It’s an added expense but ultimately worth it, in my opinion, since you don’t need to add your own topper. I felt supported and snuggled in. […] Since receiving the Green Mattress, I’ve been getting better rest, and my sleep scores have reflected that. My chiropractor has noticed my spine health is looking great, too.”

Birch’s non toxic and organic mattress may just be the coziest mattress ever. The NYC-based brand boasts OEKO-TEX and Rainforest Alliance certifications and, for every mattress sold, Birch plants one tree through the National Forest Foundation. This green mattress is made with organic, natural, hypoallergenic, and anti-microbial materials, including a natural cotton cover, hygroscopic wool (from New Zealand), and sustainably-tapped latex to keep even the warmest sleeper cool. For support, the individually wrapped steel coils (steel made in the USA) offer extra comfort and optimized pressure relief. We’ve personally tested this mattress and found it soft and springy, while still feeling supportive (see that it’s a medium firmness) and offering excellent edge support. We especially love the support of the Birch Luxe! With all its awards and natural mattress components, Birch makes it easy to sleep soundly and safely.

Our Editorial Director, Emily, visited the 3Z manufacturing facility in 2024 and got to see firsthand how Birch mattresses are made from start to finish. John Merwin, the CEO of 3Z and founder of Brooklyn Bedding led the tour for a select group of editors, answering our questions and even letting us get hands-on experience sewing edge seams on tufted mattress covers. (Did you know they pour their foam and make all their springs in-house? It’s quite the production!)

Randi Donahue is a woman with brown hair in a pink top sits near a window, reflecting on her latest mattress review, as a plant thrives in the background.

Our Editor’s Review of Birch

“After months of sleeping on our Birch Luxe mattress, my husband and I are well-rested and clear on what we’ve missed out on all these years. We are delighted with this mattress; our 8 and 10-year-old daughters agree. […] This mattress helps me sleep better, so much so that I’ve gone from avoiding bedtime to looking forward to it. Now, I just have a more challenging time getting up. In addition to deeper, better-quality sleep, I’ve also noticed my body feels refreshed and ache-free.”

All products are handcrafted in their GOLS and GOTS-certified organic production facility in California, with free shipping within the contiguous USA. Our Editorial Director, Emily, visited the PlushBeds facility in Camarillo, California, where she learned about how much the brand’s quality ethos is inspired by the most legacy mattress makers in Europe — and how, at the end of the day, quality is the name of the game. The company offers a thorough selection of certified organic and eco-friendly mattresses at accessible prices, especially through key holidays, so keep an eye out for their promotions (although the brand also has luxury mattresses at top-tier price points — trust us, we’ve experienced them firsthand and the quality is unmatched).

Each of the brand’s mattresses is GREENGUARD Gold Certified, ensuring your bed has met some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low chemical emissions (plus, the brand never uses PFAS in its production). The company also provides environmental scholarships for college students, gives back to environmental and social nonprofits, and offsets 100% of its carbon emissions via TerraPass. For side sleepers like us, PlushBeds’ memory foam options are among the best non toxic mattresses. It doesn’t give us too much — or too little — firmness. Medium is just right!

Kate Arceo, a woman with long brown hair smiles while wearing a white top.

Our Editor’s Review of PlushBeds

“After our first night of sleep on our Signature Bliss mattress, I noticed it was the first morning in weeks that I’d woken up without any aches and pains. […] Since sleeping on our new mattress, I’ve noticed a significant reduction in motion transfer. With a husband who tosses and turns and two little children who occasionally end up in between us, more nights than not I can feel at least one family member or another shifting around in our bed […] since upgrading to our PlushBeds mattress, the motion transfer is at an all-time low.”

Bear’s mattresses are GREENGUARD Gold and CertiPUR-US certified, ensuring low VOCs and beds that are free from toxic chemicals and harsh flame retardants. In our testing, we’ve found the Bear Original to be an excellent budget-friendly option for back sleepers who prefer a firmer feel. The Bear Natural offers a cozy pillowtop feel on a firm base, making it a good option for people who toss and turn, since there’s low motion transfer. While most Bear models don’t offer the same organic certifications as the top three selections on this list, we still recommend it for its safety certifications and accessible price point.

Emily McGowan has short, light pink and blonde hair, and smiles, wearing a dark green top and a necklace.

Our Editor’s Review of Bear

“While there was a bit of an adjustment period with the deep tufts on the Bear Elite, they provide airflow underneath me and help alleviate my night sweats — a worthwhile tradeoff if you ask me. The cushy top offers softness without sacrificing stability, and I’ve noticed that I stay asleep more consistently throughout the night, without the anxious wakeups. If you’re looking for a range of fully organic certifications, you might want to check elsewhere; however, Bear mattresses are GREENGUARD Gold Certified, and made with CertiPUR-US® certified foams.”

Purchasing a non toxic mattress is an investment, and it can feel daunting. But Awara makes it easy to take the leap with a 365-night trial, premium customer service, and a forever warranty. Our editor took the plunge with an Awara (and in her dream size, the Cal King!), and she and her husband have slept like babies and never looked back.

We love Awara’s natural luxury hybrid mattress for its breathability and organic components, as well as the nine-inch contouring support core for pressure relief. It’s firm yet plush, and we feel confident that the mattress is supporting our bodies and promoting a healthy night’s sleep. Its ability to keep hot sleepers cool at night is outstanding (hello, fellow sweaty sleepers 👋), the latex is breathable, and the coils boost airflow. The mattress arrives at your door in a cardboard box, and it’s as easy as rolling it out and using the fabric handles to place it on your bed frame for a supremely cool and comfortable night’s sleep.

Langa Chinyoka has long braided hair, wears a white T-shirt and stands in front of a bookshelf.

Our Editor’s Review of Awara

I like a firm mattress, so the Awara mattress was perfect for me. It had just enough give (admittedly, I did do a bounce test and it passed with flying colors) while retaining its shape. I’ve been a tosser and turner my whole life, but I slept like a stone on my Awara. From someone who has been called a restless sleeper by everyone I have shared a bed with, this was a monumental achievement.”

Their twin mattress is the most affordable on our list and makes going organic more reasonable for the whole family.

Ashley D'Arcy has long brown hair and a visible tattoo on their upper arm and is sitting indoors.

Our Editor’s Review of Brentwood Home

“Brentwood Home’s Oceano mattress is medium soft, rated a 4.5/10, but with reinforcement from springs and edge protection. […] I have fewer aches and pains, and I feel so much more comfortable throughout the night. It’s brought me back to a sense of comfort that I thought I left behind in childhood. One thing to note is that this mattress measures in at 14 inches tall, adding 3+ inches to our existing setup. We might have to rethink our current platform bed frame, but it’s more than worth it!”

Saatva is a leading disruptor in the mattress industry. From latex to memory foam, the company has an impressive collection to fit every person’s sleep needs and, by cutting out retail commissions, the company can sell to consumers at a fraction of the cost. Saatva’s disruptive model extends beyond distribution: its non toxic mattresses are made with plant-based, eco-friendly materials and crafted in the USA. The company also gives back by donating hundreds of natural mattresses to high-need organizations nationwide.

Several of our editors rave about the luxury innerspring mattress — it’s their forever pick. For a memory foam mattress comparable to iComfort and Tempur-Pedic (but at a fraction of the cost), we love Loom & Leaf, Saatva’s memory foam line. While memory foam is not an all-natural material, these mattresses are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning the foam is low in VOCs. For a latex option, Saatva’s Zenhaven Mattress is 100% all-natural Talalay latex, which is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to mold, microbes, and dust mites. The Talalay manufacturing process is entirely water-based, minimizing the amount of environmentally harmful byproducts.

Trinity Wilbourn has wavy hair, and is wearing a white top and necklaces, gazes upward thoughtfully.

Our Editor’s Review of Saatva

“Saatva’s Classic Mattress in Luxury Firm features a patented Lumbar Zone® Technology and responsive dual-coil design made of recycled carbon steel meaning it’s super supportive and will never sag. Nowadays, when I wake up in the morning, I am neither creaky nor cranky and my lower back pain is gone. I recommend this mattress if you suffer from back pain, are a side sleeper who prefers a firmer option, or you want to win at life!

Our Editor’s Review of My Green Mattress

“The Pure Eco mattress has just enough plushness on top to give that delicious, sinking-into-a-cloud feeling without being a bean bag that destroys your back. The feeling of this mattress is on par with memory foam, only it’s not made of the synthetic, chemical stuff. […] After about an hour of too-excited-to-sleep zoomies, our daughter crashed into one of her deepest sleeps on her first night. She’s reported nothing but love for her bed every night since!”

With a range of options, including mattresses for kids, vegan mattresses, as well as luxury customizable and split mattress options, we can see why the brand is so well-loved. Naturepedic mattresses are particularly favorites for hot sleepers and folks who are sensitive to smells or have allergies, thanks to being hypoallergenic. Plus, all of their mattresses are formaldehyde-free and made without PFAS or chemical flame retardants while still maintaining flammability standards. (Psst — the brand’s crib mattresses are waterproof without the use of harmful chemicals, too.)

While Naturepedic mattresses do run on the more expensive side, you can count on the fact that you’re getting one of the best non toxic mattresses, made responsibly and sustainably in the USA, that will last you decades.

Brianna Schubert has glasses and a striped shirt, and is sitting on a bed, thoughtfully resting an arm on their chin.

Our Editor’s Review of Naturepedic

“In my research, I found the hypoallergenic properties of latex mattresses are good for people who are sensitive to smells and have allergies (aka me). Since switching to Naturepedic, my sleep has been great (and my fiancé reported his sleep has improved too!). We both noticed the lack of motion transfer — feeling each other move in the middle of the night — and loved the luxury feel of it. And when I had a two-day migraine, it was fantastic to have a mattress that kept me cool and supported my head, neck, and back while I rested.”

Our editors’ top considerations when shopping for an organic mattress:

There are now over 175 bed-in-a-box mattress brands to choose from 🤯. Selecting a new mattress is totally daunting! Especially since, as Dr. Matthew Walker, Professor of Neuroscience and Psychology at the University of California, Berkeley writes, “[S]leep is the single most effective thing we can do to reset our brain and body health each day.” Mattress shopping is an incredibly personal decision — and a steep investment — so it’s important to find the perfect fit. (Of course, our favorite brands listed above offer sleep trials to make sure you’re completely satisfied, but it’s never fun having to coordinate the return of a mattress that didn’t work out for you.) Here’s a look at what factors you might consider depending on the type of sleep preferences you have.

As Dr. Michael Breus, clinical psychologist and sleep medicine expert, notes: “When putting together the ideal sleep environment, it’s not just about optimizing temperature, humidity, noise, and light. Having the right mattress, pillows, and bedding can also help you feel relaxed and ready for a good night’s rest.”

Start your search with a budget and mattress size in mind, which may help you narrow down the type of mattress within your price range before considering other factors. We’ve listed the types of mattresses below in order from least expensive to most expensive.

When do you know it’s time to get a new mattress?

Most mainstream mattresses will last 7–10 years in your home, but there are a few other indicators that might mean it’s time to get a new one. First, inspect your mattress for visible wear and tear — are there any points that sag, or new lumps that aren’t supposed to be there? Does the mattress squeak or creak when you roll over on it? Then, consider the quality of your sleep in the past few months. New aches and pains (especially in your shoulders, neck, and back), increased allergy sensitivities, or poor sleep quality in general might indicate that it’s time to get shopping. And, maybe, even make an upgrade to an organic mattress!

Which type of mattress should you choose?

  • Innerspring mattresses are ideal for people who prefer a more traditional mattress feel (think: a little bouncy), and for folks who tend to sleep hot thanks to the good airflow around the springs.
    • Pros: Often more affordable, supportive, and breathable
    • Cons: You might notice squeaking or creaking, there’s not much motion isolation (so you’ll feel it if your partner tosses and turns), and innerspring mattresses may wear out faster than other types
  • Memory Foam mattresses are excellent for side sleepers and people who deal with joint pain. The foam offers greater motion isolation than innersprings do, which means you won’t wake up if your bedmate moves or gets up a lot.
    • Pros: Contours to your body, offering motion isolation and pressure relief
    • Cons: Can retain heat (watch out, hot sleepers), and depending on the materials, you might experience off-gassing odors
  • Hybrid mattresses offer a balance of innerspring and foam mattresses. We think of them as the “Goldilocks beds” because they’re just right for a wide range of people. You’ll get support and comfort no matter how you sleep (especially if you sleep in multiple positions).
    • Pros: A balance of support and comfort (not too firm or soft)
    • Cons: Can be heavy depending on the materials used, and more expensive because of the multiple components
  • Latex mattresses offer similar contouring and support to memory foam, making them a good choice for people sensitive to odors or with allergies. Latex is also naturally well-ventilated, making it a great choice for hot sleepers. And, of course, latex is a natural material, so you can feel better about the eco-impact of your mattress. You can find a complete list of all-latex mattresses here. Both Dunlop and Talalay latex are good options — because of their different production methods, Dunlop will be more dense and Talalay will tend to be lighter and bouncier. Dunlop latex can be made with all-natural materials, unlike Talalay, which needs synthetic additives, which means Dunlop latex is the only option that can receive an organic certification.
    • Pros: Hypoallergenic, responsive without being too bouncy (or making you feel like you’ve sunk into quicksand, like some memory foam), and has impressive durability for many years of use
    • Cons: All-natural latex mattresses can get very heavy if they’re not mixed with other materials and often carry the highest price tags

Which firmness should you look for?

  • Back Sleepers typically enjoy medium-firm to firm mattresses. For support and spinal alignment, look for memory foam, latex, and firmer hybrid mattresses.
  • Side Sleepers will typically sleep well on soft to medium mattresses. Look for softer memory foam and hybrid mattresses to relieve pressure on your shoulders and hips.
  • Stomach Sleepers will likely snooze best on firm mattresses. Look for firm innerspring and foam mattresses that reduce sinking so you can keep your spinal alignment.
  • What if you’re not sure? You can tell if a mattress is too soft for your needs if you feel stuck or unsupported, experience back pain or stiffness, or overheat due to sinking in too much. If a mattress is too firm, you’ll notice aching in your pressure points like hips, shoulders, and knees (or even numbness or tingling). You might also notice that you toss and turn when you’re trying to sleep, or that there’s a large gap under your lower back when you lay flat on the bed.

Other important considerations when choosing a mattress:

  • Are you a sweaty sleeper? Hot sleepers will like the breathability of latex, hybrid, and innerspring mattresses. If you do opt for foam, look for gel-infused or open-cell foam for extra airflow. If looking into hybrid mattresses, we recommend looking for ones with natural fabrics in the top layers — like organic cotton, wool, and natural latex.
  • For cold sleepers, beds that you sink into will cover a larger surface area of your body (so, think soft), and you’ll benefit from the heat retention qualities of memory foam and other foam mattresses.
  • If you snore, consider mattresses compatible with adjustable bed frames to elevate your head and improve airflow. Research has shown that even a 12-degree incline can be an unobtrusive way to reduce snoring and help you sleep through the night.
  • If you have allergies, consider hypoallergenic mattresses made from organic latex and bamboo viscose or rayon. These materials also help protect against dust mites.
  • Consider your preference between hand-tufting and other methods of layer bonding, such as glue. Some brands may use glues that won’t last as long as a quality tuft, or may contain toxic ingredients that you don’t want in your mattress.
  • Warranties typically cover factory defects but may not cover standard wear and tear. Check with your mattress maker before deciding to see if you’ll be covered down the line if the mattress wears in ways you don’t like!
  • If you tend to roll around a bit at night or want to maximize the usable surface of your mattress, look for models that offer a high level of edge support, which can help keep you on the bed. This is also handy if you have mobility issues and need extra firmness when getting out of bed in the morning.

What certifications ensure a mattress is organic or non toxic?

While there are a range of natural materials that offer non toxic sleep, we look for brands that carry additional certifications to ensure their mattresses are as safe as they claim to be. Here are the certifications we look for when evaluating organic (and sustainable) mattresses.

  • GOTS Certified: The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the gold standard for organic cotton, wool, and other textile components. Only textile products made from 95% certified organic raw materials can become GOTS Certified. There are also stringent worker protections that ban exposure to toxic chemicals and child or forced labor. Because GOTS’ rigorous certification requires environmental and social criteria across the entire textile supply chain, it is the gold standard for ensuring health and safety.
  • GOLS Certified: The Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) ensures that the latex in your mattress (and pillows) contains more than 95% of certified organic raw material. Similar to GOTS, GOLS also requires both environmental and social criteria throughout the entire textile supply chain.
  • MADE SAFE: MADE SAFE is a non toxic certification for everyday products, like mattresses, bedding, and skincare. This certification is extremely stringent, and every product is screened to validate that over 6,500 substances on the banned and restricted list have been avoided or constrained, eliminating the worst hazards commonly found in products used in our homes and daily routines.
  • GREENGUARD Certified: A GREENGUARD Certification means that your mattress meets some of the world’s most rigorous and comprehensive standards for low emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into indoor air. GREENGUARD Gold certification ensures the lowest emissions and off-gassing (making it especially good for folks who might be extra sensitive).
  • OEKO-TEX Certified: OEKO-TEX is a consistent, independent testing and certification system that ensures every component in a mattress is free from harmful substances (from raw materials to the final product).
  • CertiPUR-US: While CertiPUR-US doesn’t consider organic or natural materials, it does set a non toxic standard for the flexible polyurethane foam used in many hybrid and memory foam mattresses. This certification ensures that foams meet safety standards and are free of ozone-depleting substances, flame retardants, mercury, lead, formaldehyde, and phthalates, and have low VOC emissions.
  • B Corporation: B Corporations meet the highest standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. Organizations must be verified through B Lab, a nonprofit dedicated to ensuring a fair and sustainable global economy to become a B Corp.
  • Climate Neutral Certified: Climate Neutral Certified brands measure and offset their entire carbon footprint and implement plans to reduce future emissions — we look for these when searching for more sustainable options. Some companies even claim to be carbon-negative by removing more carbon than they emit, although that is not an official certification.
  • Fair Trade Certification: One of the most rigorous social standards, the Fair Trade certification means that materials are sourced ethically and workers are paid fair wages.
  • USDA Certified Organic: The USDA Organic seal assures consumers that raw materials like cotton or wool are 95% or more organic. This seal does not cover any chemicals used in the production process, or the entire mattress like GOTS does.
  • eco-INSTITUT Certification: The eco-INSTITUT label is awarded to mattresses that have been tested for harmful substances, odors, and emissions in order to ensure healthier indoor air quality.
  • FSC Certified: The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) examines wood components like bed frames, as well as paper packaging materials. This certification ensures that these products come from responsibly managed forests.
  • PETA-Approved Vegan: The PETA-Approved Vegan certification assures shoppers that no animal products were used in the manufacturing process (such as wool, down, or leather). Many organizations offer other vegan certifications, too, like the Vegan Action certification. Just make sure that the entire mattress is vegan — not just a handful of the components.
  • 1% for the Planet: Members of 1% for the Planet donate 1% of annual sales to environmental causes, which is a bonus when we’re looking for sustainable bedding options.

What are common harmful substances found in traditional mattresses?

While you can find more affordable mattresses than the options on this list, it’s important to recognize that not all mattresses are created equal. Most conventional mattresses available online and in-store contain harmful substances that affect your home’s air quality and your health through chronic, long-term exposure. Here are a few to look out for:

  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are gases emitted from certain solids or liquids, including many synthetic materials used in mattresses. (They’re also common in paints!) VOCs have health impacts ranging from mild irritation and nausea to liver, kidney, and central nervous system damage. Some VOCs are even known carcinogens.
  • Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) are a group of man-made chemicals used in some mattresses and furniture for their water and stain-resistant properties. Research on these “forever chemicals” by the CDC and the EPA has linked PFAS to liver damage, thyroid disease, decreased fertility, high cholesterol, obesity, hormone suppression, and cancer.
  • Chemical flame retardants, like brominated or halogenated flame retardants, are added to mattresses to ensure they meet fire safety standards. These flame retardants have been linked to health issues such as endocrine disruption, neurodevelopmental issues, and cancer, especially in vulnerable populations like infants or the elderly.
  • Fiberglass is used in some mattresses as an inexpensive flame retardant, but fiberglass fibers can be released into the air and environment if the mattress cover is removed or torn. Aside from short-term irritation, chronic inhalation of fiberglass can worsen respiratory conditions like asthma or bronchitis.
  • Polyurethane is a commonly used foam in mattresses, but it can release VOCs through off-gassing. (That new mattress smell? It might be the polyurethane!) This can cause respiratory irritation and headaches, and some research suggests potential endocrine disruption.

What is greenwashing?

Greenwashing is the practice of a company claiming to be more environmentally friendly—or non toxic—than it really is, often through misleading marketing language. This is particularly prevalent in the mattress industry, so our reviews focus only on brands that hold trusted third-party certifications like those listed above. Not every mattress will be perfect, but when it comes to such big investments in our daily routines and well-being, we want to know that the brands are accountable to outside sources for their claims about non toxic materials and sustainable production.

How to care for an organic mattress (and why they last longer!)

A mattress can be a steep investment — especially when you opt for an organic or natural one. But the perks of a well-crafted mattress include longevity: many of our favorite mattresses last 25+ years while maintaining quality and comfort. (And, compared to more “mainstream” brands that release more VOCs and can crumble as they age, you won’t get that funky smell or degradation with natural mattresses). That doesn’t mean you don’t have any upkeep; in order to keep your mattress cozy for the long haul, here’s how to best take care of it:

  • Always use a mattress protector to prevent spills from absorbing into the mattress (the number of times we’ve spilled coffee in bed has taught us this lesson firsthand).
  • Rotate and flip the mattress according to the manufacturer’s suggested timeline. Each timeline may differ, but the standard is to rotate once every three to six months.
  • Snuggle up with natural and organic bedding to get the most breathability out of your new mattress — it’s a game-changer.
  • Clean spills immediately (and use a mattress protector, as noted above) to keep your mattress dry and mold-free. If you live in a humid environment, consider getting a dehumidifier to reduce moisture retention.

How long will an organic mattress last?

Standard mattresses have a 7-10 year lifespan, but many organic options on our list feature lifespans of 25 years and longer! Some even offer lifetime warranties; that’s how deeply the brand stands behind their product. Review each brand’s recommendations for how frequently to replace your mattress, but know that generally, the higher the investment, the longer the mattress should last.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We’ve researched and tested ceramic plates from our favorite sustainable brands — these are our top picks for durability, safety, sustainability, and design.

When choosing dinnerware from big-box retailers, what looks like a sturdy plate may actually be made from easily broken tempered glass or, worse, plastic. But if you’re looking to invest in your next set of plates, we recommend looking at ceramics. Not only are ceramics durable for long-term use, but they’re also made with natural clay.

What to look for when shopping for ceramics:

There are three main types of ceramics: Earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. Earthenware is fired at an average of 1950 degrees Fahrenheit (1000+ degrees Celsius), resulting in a hardened look that may need an additional glaze. Stoneware is mid- to high-fired from 2200 to 2350 degrees Fahrenheit (1200 degrees Celsius) with a finished product that will be more durable and waterproof. Porcelain, firing at the highest temp (2400 degrees Fahrenheit, or 1300+ degrees Celsius), is often white, shiny, and hardened in appearance. With this in mind, we’ve sourced a few brands offering sustainable ceramic plates so you can upgrade your kitchen thoughtfully.

Our Criteria:

  • THOUGHTFUL DESIGN | Each of these home brands prioritizes sustainability and craftsmanship when choosing materials and design.
  • DURABILITY | The below brands use the highest quality ceramic materials to ensure your plates will last against wear and tear and stay beautiful, even after many (many!) meals.
  • AFFORDABILITY | Ceramic dishes and stoneware are naturally more expensive. We’ve done our best to select brands that balance craftsmanship with accessible pricing.

The post What It’s Really Like To Buy Custom, Made-To-Order Furniture In An Instant Era appeared first on The Good Trade.

]]>
I have a small nightstand that belonged to my grandparents. It’s a simple wooden table with one cupboard. It feels like a relic of my childhood and serves as a reminder of summers spent in the Bay Area, running through the sprinklers with my sister and modeling our grandma’s high heels and jewelry. In the evenings, we ate KFC on TV trays, and my grandpa would drink iced tea, always setting his glass on the side table. I have no idea where they bought it or how long they had it for, but it carries their memory. I plan to hold onto it forever.

I love furniture with a story. I love the richness that pieces can bring to a home. I’ve never been able to afford custom furniture — I’ve relied heavily on thrift shops and secondhand options — but I’ve also always been drawn to the idea of buying something handmade or even custom.

When I learned about Hardman Design, a handcrafted furniture company with roots in Britain (where I went to graduate school and lived for two years) and Berlin, a city I visited while processing a period of deep grief, I felt an immediate connection. Then the brand offered to work with me on a review of one of their sideboards. I, of course, agreed. Here is what it was like to choose a made-to-order piece for my home and why I’m strongly advocating we boycott fast furniture and only buy custom-made moving forward.

Minimalist living room with light wood furniture, a white armchair, nested coffee tables, a rug, large windows, and decorative plants, illuminated by natural sunlight.

About Hardman Design

Hardman Design is built around a simple ethos: create handcrafted, sustainable furniture meant to be kept and passed down for generations. Founded in 2012 by British designer Liam Hardman, the company blends German precision with British craftsmanship. Every piece balances warm hardwoods with clean, timeless silhouettes that feel modern and removed from social media trends.

What makes Hardman feel especially relevant today is their made-to-order model. Every piece is built only after it has been purchased, including standard pieces (like the one I received) and custom furniture, which is a perfect option if you want to tailor something specific to your space.

“Rather than adapting your home to fit a standard size or finish, the piece can be adjusted to suit the proportions of the room and the way it will actually be used,” says the Hardman Design team. “That might mean refining the dimensions of a sideboard so it sits comfortably within architectural details, or selecting a finish that responds well to the light in that space.”

There are currently 21 design collections to choose from, with products ranging from dining tables and outdoor seating to bed frames and bookshelves. I selected the sideboard from the METIN collection for our small dining nook.

But first, more on why custom and made-to-order furniture matters more than ever in 2026.

Why custom and made-to-order matter more than ever in 2026

It’s no secret that overconsumption is at an all-time high. It’s estimated that Americans throw out at least 12 million tons of furniture every year. Fast furniture is harmful to the environment and human health, as many cheap furniture options contain VOCs that are released through off-gassing. The industry has made it possible to furnish a home overnight. But that’s not necessarily a good thing.

“We operate at a different pace,” says the Hardman Design team, describing how their production model is built around careful craftsmanship and long-term quality rather than volume or speed.

“Our role isn’t to compete on how fast something can be delivered or how many pieces can be produced… It’s to offer furniture that’s made carefully and intended to become part of the home rather than pass through it,” they say.

The philosophy extends into material choice and construction. Hardman Design works with sustainably sourced hardwoods, including FSC-certified oak and walnut, materials selected for their durability and natural character.

“Solid hardwood has natural movement, variation, and character,” the team says. “When it’s properly understood and respected in construction, it becomes incredibly durable. We design our pieces to accommodate that movement, keeping them stable through seasonal changes and everyday use.”

Unlike synthetic or veneered materials, which are designed to look new for as long as possible, solid wood is meant to evolve. It develops patina, responds to light, and can often be refinished over decades. “That ability to change is part of what gives the piece a long life,” the team explains. “Craftsmanship is about foresight — thinking about how something will perform ten or twenty years from now, not just how it looks on the day it arrives.”

Still, it’s not always an easy choice. There’s an allure to overnight shipping, and we’re constantly bombarded with shifting design trends. Choosing a handcrafted piece of furniture requires patience, a financial investment, and a willingness to commit before you’ve even touched the finished piece. But there’s also a different kind of satisfaction that comes with it, one that I experienced myself.

Working with Hardman Design

I began working with Hardman Design in the winter of 2025. Once I decided on the METIN Sideboard for our space, the first step was to wait for the wood samples to arrive. The website itself is incredibly easy to navigate, with all the options laid out up front: wood type, finish choices, and a range of sizes. The brand has a showroom in New York City, but I also found their social media helpful for seeing videos of each piece, giving me a better idea of exactly what I wanted for our home.

The METIN Sideboard is available in widths from about 43 to 94 inches, all with the same 17-inch depth and 28-inch height. Since our eating area is small, and I wanted something that would provide storage without feeling heavy or oversized, I chose one of the pre-designed configurations rather than creating a fully custom piece. For the finish, I opted for oak because of its warmth and durability. The smallest option starts at $3648.

In terms of timing, Hardman Design is transparent about what to expect: the build time for the METIN Sideboard is around 15–17 weeks, plus another three to four weeks for delivery to the U.S. once it’s completed. It’s a stark contrast to the “two-day shipping” model we’ve all become accustomed to, but I don’t see this as a drawback. Good things take time, right?

A wooden sideboard with two cabinet doors and three drawers, holding stacked books, sample tiles, and a glass vase with flowers, next to a round table on a hardwood floor.

Receiving the Metin Sideboard

Fast forward to February 2026. Winter is nearing its end! I received a notification that the sideboard was at London Gatwick Airport (cue nostalgia) and on its way to Los Angeles. It arrived a few days later on a pallet, carefully packaged and then unpacked even more carefully by the white-glove delivery service — I highly recommend this for solid-wood furniture and investment pieces.

Assembly was straightforward, with only minimal steps required to lock the legs in place. In other words, no IKEA allen wrenches.

What surprised me most, apart from how truly beautiful the sideboard looked in our home, was the smell that lingered for 24 hours. It didn’t smell like chemical finish or mass-produced furniture, but rather like real wood, like when my dad used to work on woodworking projects, and the garage would fill with the scent of sawdust. It was unexpectedly luxurious in a very simple way.

A case for investing in made-to-order pieces

The Metin Sideboard from Hardman Design is gorgeous with plenty of storage space. The soft-close drawers are a much-appreciated inclusion!

It’s been a few weeks since the sideboard became part of our family, and I really do mean family, because this is a piece we will keep forever. I didn’t realize how beautifully wood could catch morning light until I saw the oak surface glowing softly under the sun. Aesthetically, I love how the piece grounds the room. It’s not oversized, and I actually like that. It sits under the window and does its job well, offering beautiful storage while blending into the background of our home. It makes the room feel warmer and more lived-in. I also love how I can see the German and British inspiration in one piece.

Functionally, the storage is deep and generous. Our microwave fits inside, and there’s plenty of space for dishes and everyday items like linens and coffee mugs. I especially appreciate the soft-close drawers and cabinets. My daughter is learning how to open and close everything she sees, so no smashed fingers, please!

Overall, I’m genuinely so happy with this piece that it’s hard to imagine going back to cheaper particle-board furniture. Investing in made-to-order furniture has helped me rethink what it means to buy something for our home. Good furniture isn’t rushed; it’s built with intention, patience, and care. In a world that moves around instant gratification, choosing to wait feels countercultural, as does spending more than $100 on a piece of furniture. But I have to believe it’s entirely worth it.

This is absolutely a luxury purchase, and I don’t take that lightly. Made-to-order and custom furniture isn’t accessible for everyone, which is why I also love exploring secondhand options.

There is also something to be said for the cost accrued when we replace “cheap” furniture every few years, or more. It does add up. And I like the idea of owning fewer things but keeping them forever. This may not be the way of trends, but it’s the way of intentional and sustainable living.

All this to say, if you can afford to buy a made-to-order or custom piece of furniture, even if it’s just one piece for your home that you choose to keep forever, it’s a truly special process. Hardman Design strikes a beautiful balance of craftsmanship and care, making the journey feel as meaningful as the finished piece.

I researched and tested the best filtered shower heads in my bathroom — these are my top picks for filtering out chemicals and heavy metals with notes on install and benefits for each.

Overall Favorite: Jolie, $122+ | Best Multi-Pressure: Canopy, $125+ | Best Handheld: sproos!, $120+

Do you have sensitive or dry skin, a dry scalp, eczema, or brittle hair? It might be because of “hard water,” also known as water with extra minerals. Most of the US water supply falls under this category, and while not all minerals in hard water are dangerous, there is potential for contaminants like heavy metals. Plus, the minerals in hard water can build up in our skin, hair, and even the shower itself. But don’t worry! Filter shower heads can help reduce hard water, and in turn, provide benefits for your hair and skin.

I tried out the three top filter shower heads out there, so if you’re looking to make the switch, read on to hear what I liked about each of them. Reap both the wellness and sustainability benefits — and enjoy softer, more nourished, and shinier skin and hair along the way. 🚿

What do filtered shower heads do?

In short, filter shower heads reduce hard water (that’s water with a high mineral content) and unwanted contaminants. Filtered shower heads use Kinetic Degradation Fluxion (KDF) — otherwise known as a zinc or copper filter — to get rid of these contaminants, like heavy metals, chlorine, and other minerals, and instead pass through clear, clean water. But how exactly do they filter water? It varies depending on the brand, but generally, as the water passes through the filter, it catches the contaminants on the way. These filtered shower heads have multiple layers within the filters to catch different elements as they pass through.

The filters also take into consideration things like hot water and the velocity of the water, which is one way that shower head filters differ from a sink or pitcher water filter. Another difference from sink or pitcher water filters: The filtration area of focus. Sink filters focus on filtering water for drinkability, contaminants, and taste, whereas a shower head filter focuses more on reducing hard water and removing contaminants that could cause dry or irritated skin and hair.

What are the benefits of having a filtered shower head?

Some studies suggest that minerals in shower water might contribute to dryness and irritation, both for your hair and your skin. Shower head filters can help remove these and other chemicals, like chlorine (which is great for keeping bacteria out of water but not necessarily great for your skin and hair), from your water. Filtering these elements out can leave your skin feeling smoother and your hair looking shinier.

Plus, if you live in an area with hard water, a filtered shower head that softens water can help reduce hard water damage to your hair and skin. While research on the effectiveness of filtered shower heads is still ongoing, many users swear by them for improving their overall shower experience and water quality.

How often do I have to change the filter?

Most filter shower heads — all of the ones on this list — should be changed every three months. The filters are catching things like minerals, dirt, rust, and other chemicals, and that builds up! Just look at the side-by-side image that Sproos provides here. You can literally see all of the gunk that gets filtered out. So, if you don’t change it every 90 days, you might find that it’ll lose its effectiveness and could even become clogged from all of the minerals and gunk that it’s collecting. Luckily, all three of these brands offer subscription plans that send you a new filter every three months so you don’t even have to think about when to do it. The filter will show up at your door, and it takes just a few minutes to swap it out.

Our methodology & criteria:

I personally tested three of the most popular shower head filters on the market to determine which was best for filtration, water pressure, and ease of use.

Four packaging boxes labeled "sproos!", "canopy", and "Jolie" are arranged on a tiled floor against a white brick wall.

To test the filter shower heads, I installed each myself and noted how long it took me to install (and if there were any difficulties). I tried them out for two weeks, taking note of how soft my hair and skin felt after using each. Being someone who is very sensitive about water pressure — I need good water pressure for my thick hair — I noted the different water pressures for each. To get a male perspective, I also regularly asked my husband his thoughts on the showerheads throughout the trials.

  • EFFECTIVE FILTRATION | These filtered shower heads effectively filter out harsh chemicals, heavy metals, and help soften hard water, for healthier and softer skin and hair.
  • GOOD WATER PRESSURE | The showerheads we tested provide good water pressure while also offering low-flow options to reduce water consumption and prevent unnecessary water waste.
  • EASY TO USE | Each of these filtered shower heads fit standard showers, are easy to install, offer filter subscriptions, and look aesthetically pleasing, making it an upgrade that you, your hair, and your skin will appreciate for years to come!

1. Jolie

Eco friendly packaging
Natural materials
Recycled materials
Small business
Subscriptions available

Best for | Overall favorite
Features | Five colors, filters last 90 days, DIY installation, biodegradable packaging
Prices starting at | $122

Jolie’s philosophy is that clean beauty starts with clean water. Using two filter media, American-made KDF-55 (high-purity copper-zinc) and calcium sulfite, Jolie’s Filtered shower head removes heavy metals and chlorine from your water. The shower head has been third-party tested as well to back this claim up. They have customers’ reviews sharing how the filtered shower head has helped them with their ailments, from eczema to acne to thinning hair and more.

The shower head itself only has one pressure setting; however, it’s a steady stream coming through the precision-cut 0.1mm holes. It comes in five colorways, from modern chrome to bright red. And in the box — which is made from biodegradable reclaimed cardboard and paper pulp — you’ll find a tiny wrench, plumbers tape, instructions, your first filter, and the shower head itself. The filter is good for 90 days, and you can sign up for Jolie’s filter subscription ($35 every 90 days) so you don’t have to remember when to change it.

Jolie’s shower head is easy to self-install, using only the tools they provide (the wrench and the tape), and the filter is easy to change, too. Another cool thing: If you’re curious about what exactly is in your water, Jolie will create a free water report that tells you what chemicals are in your water based on where you live.

Our Editor’s Review | “From the packaging to the shower head itself, Jolie feels luxurious and high-quality. I love the simple design and durable feel to it. I found the filter and the shower head itself easy to install, and the cute aqua-colored wrench made me feel like a plumbing genius while I was installing it. Showering with the Jolie shower head was a delight, too. The water pressure is great but not over-the-top, and my hair felt so soft even after just one shower. “Indulgent, not wasteful,” is how the brand describes it, and I couldn’t agree more.”

2. Canopy

Natural materials
Plastic/Pfas free
Small business
Subscriptions available

Best for | Multi-pressure
Features | Four colors, three-stream settings, three-stage filter, pure essential oils aroma included, filters last 90 days, DIY installation, HSA/FSA available
Prices starting at | $125

Canopy is a New York-based beauty and wellness-forward brand that creates devices for your home that help you build your wellness routine. This includes their filtered shower heads, which are designed with a three-stage filtration system that uses activated carbon, copper-zinc, and calcium sulfite — all natural materials — to filter your water from chlorine, magnesium, calcium carbonate, iron, and other contaminants.

There are two shower head options from Canopy: the Filtered shower head and the Handheld Filtered shower head. Or they also offer a Shower System that includes both, if you prefer to have the option to switch back and forth. The regular shower head has three stream settings: wide, narrow, and dual, which you can easily switch between using the little toggle on the bottom of the shower head.

All of the shower heads come in four colorways and include your first filter. However, you have to change the filters every 90 days and you do have to purchase the replacement filters separately. Canopy does offer a subscription ($40 every 90 days, includes an aromatherapy essential oil) where you can get replacement filters sent to you every 90 days. All of Canopy’s shower heads also come with a bottle of aromatherapy essential oil and a felt diffuser that you can hang off your shower head to create a spa-like experience while you shower.

The shower heads are easy to self-install, and the only tools — a wrench and optional plumbing tape — are included with your purchase.

Our Editor’s Review | “I had really high expectations for Canopy’s shower head. The packaging, the fancy, chrome look of the shower head, and the aromatherapy were all really impressive and made me excited to try it out. Installation was easy, especially with the little notch on the neck of the shower head to help you turn it tight. The aromatherapy essential oils made me feel like I was at the spa, luxuriating in the scented steam. However, while it did a great job at filtering water, I found myself slightly underwhelmed by the water pressure, even when I turned it from the wide spray to dual. If you’re looking for an option that doesn’t have as intense of a stream, this could be a good choice.”

3. sproos!

Eco friendly packaging
Recycled materials
Warranty offered

Best For | Handheld
Features | Three shower sprays, pause button, long shower hose, 50% recycled materials, colorful designs
Prices starting at | $120

Creating home-improvement shower solutions that are renter-friendly is the name of the game for Sproos. Their handheld shower head and filter set — developed by a filter expert and shower designer — has a two-step filtration system that uses a pre-filter to catch rust, sediment, and larger particles and an American-made KDF-55 to filter chlorine and heavy metals. The filter is made of 50% post-consumer recycled materials, too, for a more environmentally-friendly option.

The shower heads themselves are iconically colorful, available in bright fun colors like blue, red, yellow, green, and pink. They also have two metallic options as well, if you prefer a more traditional shower head color. The handheld shower head has a long hose and multiple flow settings, as well as a pause button, which can be used for washing pets and kids, or even watering your plants! Sproos comes with everything you need to install it yourself, including a full-size wrench and detailed instructions right on the box itself.

Our Editor’s Review | “I love the playful, bright color options of Sproos. That’s definitely what appealed to me the most right off the bat. I opted for the blue shower head, excited about the pop of color it’d add to my bathroom. Both the shower head and the filter were easy to install, though when I turned it on, I found that one end of the hose dripped a bit when the water was running. Despite this, the shower head’s water pressure was great! My husband couldn’t stop talking about how much softer his hair felt from this shower head. I loved the handheld option and the steady stream of water on the main setting. The other two water flows weren’t as practical in my opinion, but it’s nice to have options!”

I personally reviewed the best organic kids bedding on the market — these are my favorites with notes on safety, comfort, ease-of-care, and durability.

It’s no secret we’re big fans of making our beds with the best and most organic materials, and we want to ensure our family members are sleeping well (and safely), too. This is especially the case for the littlest ones in our home! Organic bedding for kids can reduce exposure to harsh chemicals, support sensitive skin, and help little ones sleep more comfortably.

This guide focuses on child-friendly brands that prioritize natural materials, responsible sourcing, and quality construction so that our kids can get the safest sleep possible.

Why consider organic bedding for kids?

While getting our babies and kids to sleep may feel like a challenge at times, the truth is that their little bodies need it. In fact, babies under one year old sleep upwards of 16 hours a day, which means what they are sleeping on is in close proximity to them more than fifty percent of the time.

Conventional kids’ bedding is often made with polyester blends, synthetic finishes, and chemical treatments that may off-gas over time, while organic brands tend to use breathable, plant- and animal-based fibers that are kinder to developing bodies and to the environment.

Choosing organic bedding also supports better farming and labor practices, with many brands investing in fair wages and lower-impact production. So whether you’re prioritizing sustainability, lower toxin exposure, or a combination of both, shopping kids bedding with gentler materials and practices is a practical way to align everyday routines — like bedtime — with long-term health and eco-conscious values.

How to choose the right organic bedding for your child

When you shop for kids’ bedding, think about factors such as your child’s comfort, your climate, and how easy everything is to wash and dry. Consider weaves like percale (crisper and cooler) versus sateen (smoother and slightly warmer), as well as fabric weight for different seasons.

Common materials you’ll see in kid-focused organic bedding include:

  • Organic cotton: Soft, breathable, and versatile for sheets, duvet covers, and pillowcases.
  • Wool: Naturally temperature-regulating and moisture-wicking, often used in blankets and comforter fills.
  • Down or down-alternative: Offers a fluffy, cloud-like feel in comforters and duvets, better suited to older kids and teens.
  • Natural latex and other plant-based fills: Sometimes used in pillows for responsive support.

What certifications ensure kids’ bedding is organic or nontoxic?

Because marketing language can be vague, certifications help confirm that bedding meets strict safety and environmental standards. Ideally, I’ll choose bedding that has the GOTS certification, and when that isn’t available, or the price is out of reach, I’ll opt for OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100.

Some key labels to look for include:

  • GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard): Ensures textiles (like cotton or wool) are predominantly organic and processed without many harmful chemicals, while also requiring responsible labor practices.
  • GOLS (Global Organic Latex Standard): Applies to natural latex, verifying organic cultivation and limiting harmful substances.
  • OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100: Verifies that finished textile products are tested for a long list of potentially harmful substances.
  • Fair Trade and similar labels: Focus on fair wages, safe working conditions, and ethical labor across the supply chain.

Our criteria & methodology:

Our team looks for brands that balance safety, comfort, and practicality for family life. We pay particular attention to how bedding performs after repeated washes and in homes with sensitive children.

As a mother of two and a self-proclaimed sustainable home goods connoisseur, I’m continually searching for products that balance sustainability, safety, longevity, and budget. I’ve washed my kids’ bedding hundreds of times over the last five years, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that just because they’re organic and have a hefty price tag doesn’t mean they hold up.

A variety of neatly stacked bedding items, including pillows, quilts, comforters, sheets, and blankets, are arranged on a bed against a white wall.
I tested each of these organic bedding brands at home with my kiddos to see how they hold up.

Below, I’ll note which brands feel the most durable, which is best for transitioning to organic bedding on a budget, and my top pick for mattresses, mattress covers, and nontoxic bedding basics.

Our criteria for top kids’ bedding brands:

  • ORGANIC & NONTOXIC | Use of organic fibers and avoidance of harsh finishes and treatments wherever possible.
  • COMFORT | Soft handfeel, breathable weaves, and options that work in different climates and seasons.
  • AFFORDABLE | A range of price points, with emphasis on durability and long-term value for growing families.
  • SMELL | Minimal chemical or “factory” odor out of the package, important for sensitive kids.
  • DURABILITY | Strong stitching, quality fabrics, and good performance after multiple washes.
  • ECO-FRIENDLY & GIVE BACK | Thoughtful production practices, better materials sourcing, and social or environmental initiatives.

Think about what your child needs most — cooling sheets for hot sleepers, extra-cozy layers for colder rooms, or hypoallergenic materials for sensitive skin — as you browse these brands. And, if you’re looking to refresh your own bedding, take a look at our favorite organic mattresses, mattress protectors, bedding brands, and comforters, too.

Their focus on climate-conscious production and natural materials makes them appealing for eco-minded families. The brand leans into a cozy, layered look that older kids and teens often enjoy, with fluffy, comfort-focused options that still avoid harsh chemicals. Families can mix and match pieces to create a comfortable, cohesive bed setup that grows with their children.

Kate’s Review | Prior to having children, my husband and I spent every spare penny we had on a brand new Avocado mattress for our own bed. To this day, the brand is my number one choice for their full range of bedding, including duvet inserts, pillows, and mattresses. Their nontoxic waterproof mattress cover is one of my all-time favorite (and underrated!) products, and has saved all of our mattresses from many a mess. Their organic sheets are as lovely as the rest, but I would prioritize their foundational items like pillows and mattress covers for families that want to narrow down their choices.

2. Makemake

USDA organic

Best for | Playful, kid-centered designs

Makemake focuses on children from the start, pairing safe, natural materials with fun colors and prints that kids love. Their bedding is designed to feel soft and breathable while still standing up to frequent washing and everyday play, which I found to be true of our experience. Parents who want a bed that looks as joyful as it feels will appreciate the emphasis on kid-friendly aesthetics without sacrificing safer materials. The brand holds GOTS and OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certifications, as well as being Fair Trade certified. It’s a strong option if you’re building a themed room or encouraging kids to get excited about bedtime.

Kate’s Review | My daughter squealed with delight when I unveiled her new pink floral duvet (and protested when I needed to take it off for a wash). By far, Makemake has the widest selection of playful prints, and balances impressive certifications with cost well. This is the set that remains on my daughter’s bed, and I wonder if the print will make her feel nostalgic when she looks back on her childhood bedroom. I know it will make me feel that way.

3. Coyuchi

Coyuchi is known for its simple, nature-inspired designs and commitment to organic cotton. Their bedding tends to feel cool and breathable, which is especially helpful for kids who sleep warm. The brand’s muted colors and relaxed textures work well in minimalist or coastal-style kids’ rooms. Families who prioritize organic fibers, sustainability, and a calm, uncluttered look will likely find Coyuchi a good fit.

Kate’s Review | Long before we had kids (and long before we had the budget for it!), we splurged on a set of Coyuchi flannel sheets. They are my favorite sheets to this day and have held up longer than any of our other sets. Their kids’ bedding is no different, and I appreciate that they offer undyed options for those of us who prefer minimal processing or require ultra-gentle materials. One of my favorite offerings, though, is their heirloom-quality blankets for kids and babies. In fact, my children were literally playing tug of war with the quilt pictured last night, and while I urged them not to break it, I knew full well that wouldn’t happen because of Coyuchi’s hearty construction.

4. Quince

Quince focuses on offering high-quality basics at more accessible prices, often using direct-to-consumer pricing to keep costs lower. Their organic cotton bedding gives families a clean, breathable option without a premium markup. The simple designs and neutral colors can easily move with kids from one room style to another as they grow. It’s a strong choice for families wanting to outfit multiple beds with organic textiles while watching their budget.

Kate’s Review | Quince’s accessible price point makes the brand my top recommendation for families who are transitioning to organic bedding on a budget. Our family has slept on their linen and cotton varieties, and I recommend the Classic Organic Percale sets for durability.

5. Naturepedic

Naturepedic is widely recognized for its strict approach to non-toxic materials and its focus on children’s sleep products. Their bedding lines minimize chemical exposure while remaining soft, comfortable, and easy to launder. Many parents start with this brand for crib products and continue into the big-kid years because of its strong safety profile and third-party certifications, including GOTS, GOLS, EWG, FSC, and MADESAFE certified. While pricing can be higher than some competitors’, the combination of durability and peace of mind can make the investment worthwhile.

Kate’s Review | Naturepedic has an impressive glossary of third-party certifications which speaks to their sustainability and safety credibility. The brand has a wide array of beautiful colorways, too, that can serve kids and families for a lifetime of use. Additionally, 1% of every purchase is donated to environmental advocacy groups Naturepedic is partnered with, such as Textile Exchange, AllergyKids foundation, Childhood Cancer Prevention Initiative, and more.

6. West Elm

OEKO-TEX® certified

Best for | Stylish, modern kids’ rooms
Key products | Organic cotton sheet sets, quilts, duvet covers, and kids’ collections
Materials | Organic cotton and responsibly sourced fibers in select lines
Ideal ages | Kids & teens
Price range | $$

West Elm offers modern, design-forward bedding with certain collections featuring organic cotton and better-materials sourcing. These pieces can help tie together a stylish kids’ room while still aligning with more eco-conscious values. Families can find both playful and more grown-up looks, making it easier to refresh rooms as children’s tastes change. When shopping, it’s helpful to look for clearly labeled organic and ethically sourced lines within the broader assortment.

Kate’s Review | I’ve long been a fan of West Elm for offering organic and sustainable bedding and home goods, and the organic kids sheet set we tried is well-constructed and durable. While their beautiful line of kids’ bedding is extensive, the amount of certified organic options is very limited. I was only able to find one full set of sheets in the kids section (pictured) and would love to see more organic offerings in the future.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

Our team has researched and tested dozens of essential oil diffusers for safe, high quality, and affordable options — these are our top nine picks.

Essential oils have been used for centuries, aiding with sleep, relaxation, and overall healing. We love using them often, too (see our top essential oil picks for a good night’s sleep). It only takes a few deep breaths to understand how soothing these aromas can be!

We especially love diffused oils for homes that need alternatives to candles — whether you’re prioritizing for pet and child safety, have sensitivities to certain ingredients, or just want a home fragrance you can set and forget without worry.

Why look for non-toxic essential oil diffusers?

Nontoxic essential oil diffusers are a must if you’re looking to maintain a healthy and clean home. BPA-free and ceramic diffusers are a great option to help eliminate the potential of harmful chemicals being released into the air when the diffuser is heated. Another way to prevent this is by going for a non-heated or non-electronic diffuser (we’ve listed some options below!).

Diffusers are also a safe and nontoxic alternative to candles for scenting your home, as they use water and essential oils (which are safe when used correctly), rather than synthetic fragrances which are found in many conventional candles and can pollute our homes. As always, be sure to use care when introducing essential oils in your home, being especially mindful of how, when, and where they are used around children and pets.

These fragrance diffusers and nebulizers maximize their reach and fill our homes, offices, and home offices with natural and therapeutic scents. Plus, the essential oils we’ve paired them with use natural ingredients, and are responsibly sourced so you can breathe easy!

Our criteria:

  • NONTOXIC MATERIALS | We’ve compiled the best essential oil diffusers made with nontoxic materials that are BPA-free and safe for the home.
  • DESIGN AND QUALITY | We’ve selected high quality essential oil diffusers that are impeccably designed, will look beautiful (or discreet!) in your space, and that are made to last.
  • AFFORDABILITY | We’ve made sure to include affordable essential oil diffuser options for both small and large spaces, so we can scent our homes while staying cost-effective.

If essential oils aren’t for you, our guides on nontoxic candles and eco-friendly humidifiers will keep your home smelling fresh and your air quality on point. And for keeping your home in tip top shape, these eco-friendly cleaning supplies will make cleaning easier and safer for your health and your space!

We’ve outfitted our home kitchens with nontoxic accessories and appliances for years — these are our top picks for toaster ovens that are PFAS-free with safe materials.

Sometimes it’s easier to heat up food in the toaster oven — and often, it’s even more delicious. Everything from chicken tenders to veggies gets deliciously crispy in the toaster oven. Not to mention that you can cut down on cook time and resources. Instead of heating up your oven (and your whole kitchen!) to cook a single salmon fillet, an air fryer or toaster oven — also sometimes dubbed a convection oven — allows you to quickly cook smaller meals to perfection. While many options on the market contain coatings, plastic pieces, and other questionable materials, there are more and more safe options hitting the shelves so you don’t have to worry about anything besides getting the perfect cook for your meal. So we’ve researched and rounded up options that are nontoxic and made with safe materials.

Why choose a nontoxic toaster oven for your kitchen?

Conventional toaster ovens and air fryers often are made with nonstick surfaces, which traditionally can contain PTFE, PFAS, and PFOA coatings. PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances) are artificial substances created by DuPont (the makers of Teflon) in the late 1930s. They’re found in a myriad of products, from nonstick cookware to makeup. PTFE and PFOA are similar man-made chemicals that aid in nonstick. The problem with all of these chemicals is that they’re forever chemicals, meaning they’re nearly impossible to get rid of. They also pose certain health risks when exposed — not exactly something you want in your food every time you cook! Choosing a nontoxic toaster oven is a great way to reduce your exposure to these chemicals.

What materials should you look for in a nontoxic toaster oven?

When you’re shopping for a nontoxic toaster oven, it’s best to look for materials like stainless steel, aluminum, and ceramic coating. Ceramic coating is a great chemical-free coating that’s nonstick but without all of the harmful chemicals. Stainless steel is good, but you want to make sure it’s a high-quality stainless steel that isn’t galvanized stainless steel or coated with PTFE. One way to check if the product is truly free from these chemicals is to look for the chemical disclosures, if possible.

Our criteria:

Our editors have filled their kitchens with safe, durable cookware and appliances for years. We’ve relied on our first-hand experience, corresponding with the top brands, and reading thousands of customer reviews to make our selections of the best toaster ovens on the market. The options on this list are all PFAS-free, made with safe materials like stainless steel, and designed to last. We regularly update this list with new favorites that meet the following criteria.

  • NONTOXIC | Not only are these toaster ovens free from PFAS, PTFE, and PFOA coatings, they’re also made with stainless steel interiors and exteriors that won’t leach harmful chemicals into your food.
  • SAFETY & DESIGN | All of the toaster ovens on this list feature thoughtful, safe designs — from cool-touch exteriors and automatic shut-off to precise temperature control and easy-to-clean interiors.

If you’re interested in going nontoxic in your kitchen, check out our editor’s review of the best nontoxic cookware and our favorite wooden cooking utensils so you can ditch the black plastic!

Customer Review | “This is a beautifully designed air fryer. The build quality is great like all Breville products I have used. The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We’ve researched and tested hundreds of desks with eco-friendly and nontoxic materials — these are our top picks for a sustainable home office.

We’re upgrading our desks to maximize our productivity and comfort, and we think you might be too. If you’re also on the hunt for a new desk that is a step up from IKEA, check out these sustainable and nontoxic options with local manufacturing, responsibly sourced materials, and low or neutral carbon emissions. Top it off with a comfy and eco-conscious desk chair, and you’ll be good to go.

Why choose a desk made with eco-friendly and nontoxic materials?

You might opt for a wooden desk or one made with nontoxic and sustainable materials for a few reasons — aesthetic appeal, durability, safety, and sustainability being at the top of the list. Unfortunately, many conventional desks are treated with toxic chemicals like formaldehyde, phthalates, flame retardants, and wood preservatives to prevent surface defects, which can wreak havoc on the air quality of our home and health. That’s why choosing a nontoxic desk made with all natural and nontoxic finishes is so important, especially when most of us spend the majority of our days at our desks!

The natural beauty of wooden desks offers a timeless appeal and can easily complement other furniture in your home. High-quality materials are also made to be sturdy and durable, especially when made from hardwoods — meaning your furniture will stand the test of time. Best of all, many sustainable wood desks are made with wood from sustainably managed forests, or reclaimed wood, which is better for our environment.

Our criteria:

Our editors have filled their homes with sustainable and nontoxic furniture for years. We’ve relied on our first-hand experience, corresponding with the top brands, and reading thousands of customer reviews to make our selections. The options on this list are all nontoxic, eco-friendly, and will enhance the comfort and overall look of your workspace. We’ve even included at least one more affordable option on the list. We regularly update this list with new favorites that meet the following criteria.

  • COMFORT & DESIGN | All of the nontoxic desks on this list — whether you’re looking for solid wood, bamboo or something else — will elevate your space.
  • SUSTAINABLE & ECO-FRIENDLY | The brands below use reclaimed or responsibly sourced materials to ensure your desk is good for the earth and good for you too. You’ll find options that are FSC certified, Climate Neutral, and registered B Corps. These high quality materials mean your desk will last for years to come, too.
  • NONTOXIC | Not only are these nontoxic desks made with natural materials, they’re never treated with any hard chemicals that could disrupt your health while you work. Most of these come with reputable certifications that indicate low-to-no emissions.
  • AFFORDABLE | Investing in your workspace can be steep. We’ve included at least one option that is lower cost for smaller budgets.

And, of course, if these desks aren’t your style, consider renting or going secondhand. Be sure to add on these nontoxic rugs and sustainable office chairs for a cozy and conscious upgrade to your workspace!

Why I Love Avocado Furniture’s Coffee Table And Chairs https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/avocado-furniture-review/ https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/avocado-furniture-review/#respond Thu, 05 Mar 2026 15:23:26 +0000 I tried four pieces from Avocado's sustainable furniture line. They're a beautifully crafted addition to my home. Here are my thoughts, and lots of photos!

The post Why I Love Avocado Furniture’s Coffee Table And Chairs appeared first on The Good Trade.

]]>
Summary: Not many furniture makers are keeping the craft alive in the USA these days, and Avocado’s timeless pieces prove that quality is still paramount to the brand. I tested two styles of chairs and two tables, and found them to be sturdy, comfortable, and gorgeous additions to my home. There’s no offgassing and each piece carries the same certifications you’ve come to know and love from the Avocado brand. The furniture pieces are larger, heavier, and more costly than what you’d find at a typical IKEA or other box store, but there’s also a clear heirloom quality to each piece (which is why the price tag is high — I’ll have this furniture for life.) I can’t wait to see if the brand ever moves into making couches!

Pros:

  • Avocado’s furniture is mature and sophisticated while keeping a timeless design, and upholding comfort and sustainable certifications. Plus, they’re made to order in the USA!
  • There has been zero off-gassing with these pieces — not like couches I’ve purchased from IKEA or Wayfair
  • The absolute heirloom quality of these pieces means I’ll be sharing these pieces with my grandchildren one day (if I have them, hah!)
  • The coffee table is spacious and unique, and I’m more than happy to become a coaster household to maintain it
  • After years of buying furniture in boxes, these pieces arrived fully assembled — what a relief!

Cons:

  • These pieces are pricey! But if you’re investing in your forever home, it’s important to know that the price is really commensurate with the quality of furniture you’re getting
  • While everything is very sturdy, the small side table tips over easily if you have a cat who likes to jump on things. 🐈‍⬛
  • Since these pieces come preassembled, shipping is much more resource-intensive than shipping flat-pack pieces. There’s a lot of plastic, tape, and foam used in protecting the furniture in transit (and it can be a little difficult to remove, be patient!)
  • As a made-to-order furniture brand, Avocado only offers furniture as a final-sale item (although there is a ten-year warranty) — if you’re unsure about your purchase, visit a showroom or order wood samples before committing

My home is an ever-evolving space — from the early days of dumpster-diving and side-of-the-road finds, through the IKEA overhaul, and now on to a season where I’m being more selective about the furniture that comes into my home, I’ve done a little bit of everything. (And, to be honest, every roadside treasure I pass I still evaluate for quality, purpose, condition, and my space needs; I’ll never pass up a free find that I can use).

But for the past two years, I’ve undergone a shift where I’m making much more slow, intentional decisions about how I decorate. I’ve become well-versed in scouring shops and perusing reviews to find exactly what will fit in my one-bedroom Los Angeles apartment, and a little more ruthless in what I sell and donate. Call it a mid-30s reset; the first several chapters of my life are over, and it’s time to enter into a new one. This time, if it’s possible, I want to prioritize peace, routine, and slowing waaaayyy down. And I want my home to reflect those values, too.

“Avocado makes a lounge chair made from the same materials and with the same certifications as my favorite mattress of all time? Sign. Me. Up.”

I’ve slept on an Avocado mattress and bed frame for over three years, so when I started seeing the brand expand into other bedroom furniture, like dressers and nightstands, I was intrigued. When the collection expanded beyond the bedroom to include desks, tables, chairs, and other living room pieces, I was ecstatic — a lounge chair made from the same materials and with the same certifications as my favorite mattress of all time? Sign. Me. Up.

As we move into 2026 and I settle into my fifth year in this apartment, I had the chance to review some of Avocado’s new releases and updated designs. Here’s a quick look at which pieces I’ve tested, and I’ll dive into more detail below. Note that these prices are subject to change based on seasonal sales, but I have listed the regular list price below.

Avocado’s materials & sustainable certifications

Before we dive into my review of each individual piece, I think it’s important to note the benefits of choosing a brand like Avocado for your next furniture upgrade. There really are no other brands creating furniture with this degree of sustainable and nontoxic certifications that I’ve ever come across. Avocado is a B Corp, Climate Neutral Certified, and gives back through 1% for the Planet, just for starters.

“Lots of hours are spent working on these pieces by hand. I appreciate the artisanship and dedication that I saw while I toured the factory.”

The furniture is made using long-lasting hardwoods like maple and walnut, in an FSC®-certified woodshop right here in California. I even got to tour Avocado’s factory in Fullerton, CA, where I spoke with senior leadership and watched furniture like this get made! It was a great reminder of how much care goes into the construction of this furniture — lots of hours are spent working on these pieces by hand. I appreciate the artisanship and dedication I saw while touring the factory.

And for the final touches, the wood is stained with a zero-VOC ECOS® wood stain from Belgium, which is nontoxic and odor-free. (Traditional lacquers or varnishes can contain harsh chemicals that can cause headaches, nausea, and respiratory issues, which is why cheaper furniture can sometimes give off a “new-furniture” smell). For this review, I chose walnut, a dark, slightly cool-toned shade that looks warmer in the sunshine. If you’re on the fence, you can order a wood sample to make sure you get the right fit.

The upholstered products, such as the lounge chair and Truss chair, feature alpaca wool upholstery and are filled with the same GOLS-certified organic latex foam Avocado uses in its mattresses. Talk about dreamy!

My review of Avocado’s furniture bestsellers

And now, for the main event. Below, you’ll find my key takeaways for each of these classic pieces, with a look at how I styled them in my home. These mid-century modern pieces go so well with my cheerful aesthetic, and really compliment the streamline modern layout of my semi-circle living room.

Lounge Chair & Ottoman

Price | $2,299

This Mid-Century Modern beauty is a showstopper. In fact, I moved the pieces around my apartment several times to make sure these chairs felt like a focal point in my space. Since they’ve arrived, I’ve done nearly all my work, reading, and journaling while kicking back.

I especially love that the seat cushion has two wooden slats stitched into the underside, which keep it from sliding while I sit. And the upholstery — OH, the upholstery! The alpaca fiber is super soft and durable against a kitty cat who currently needs her nails clipped.

There are two wood options, maple and walnut (pictured), with 5 options for naturally dyed upholstery. I chose the color cream!

Truss Coffee Table

Price | $1,299

I’ve been without a coffee table or any type of side table for…a couple of years? Which means that I finally have a safe place to put my coffee or red wine without spilling on my furniture.

This triangular coffee table is shaped like a guitar pick and elegantly fills the space in my semicircular living room. (One of the main reasons I hadn’t had a coffee table for so long was because I was waiting for a non-rectangular option to speak to me — and this is the perfect fit!)

This coffee table is an absolutely gorgeous piece of furniture, as all of these pieces are, and I will have to remember I’m a coasters household now. There’s no way I’m letting this beauty get water rings (plus, that just means I have to crochet myself some coasters!)

Wood Side Table

Price | $349

I am smitten with this cutie side table! Its small size makes it the perfect pairing with the lounge chair (which is a generous, cozy size).

This side table is perfect for a book or two, a cup of tea, or setting your phone aside after a long day. It’s super lightweight at only five pounds, making it versatile and portable for your living room needs.

While this is still extremely sturdy, I will note that curious cats, pups, or kids may knock this little guy over (as my cat has already done twice). If you have a busy household, be sure you don’t set any drinks that will stain or candles on this piece!

Truss Chair

Price | $1,399

When I went on my Avocado factory tour last year, I was fortunate enough to see this Truss chair in its final design iterations. When it launched, I couldn’t wait to incorporate this streamlined piece into my home!

The options for the Truss chair are as numerous as those for the lounge chair and ottoman, making this a fun and flexible addition to living rooms, dining rooms, or home offices.

I initially styled this piece at my dining table, but I find it’s a little short for eating my meals. I’ll eventually move it to the desk nook in my bedroom, once I’m done repainting and re-designing. It’ll look great with my Avocado City Bed frame, which is finished in the same Walnut color!

A cozy living room with a navy sectional sofa, two white armchairs, a wooden coffee table, and a bookshelf. The walls are pink, and large windows provide natural light.
My oasis is gradually taking shape after 5 years in this space.

Shipping & product care

Before you race to the checkout, there are a few logistics to keep in mind. Once again, Avocado’s furniture pieces are high-quality, and the shipping precautions reflect that. The pieces took 4-6 weeks to ship (which may vary based on demand) since they’re all made to order, and mine required a phone call to set up an appropriate delivery time.

They arrived securely wrapped in foam, tape, and plastic wrap to avoid any dents or scratches, which makes sense at this price point. The truss chair came bundled in a box, surrounded by what appears to be scrap latex foam from Avocado’s factories — exciting to see that at least some of the packaging materials are upcycled! Otherwise, do prepare yourself for a bit of surgical plastic wrap removal, and don’t get too hasty with an XACTO blade to avoid scratching your new favorite furniture pieces.

To care for these items, I’m planning on dusting regularly and using a dry cloth to gently dab any spills on the upholstery (as someone who is prone to spilling, I’m admittedly a little scared of how nice these are. “This is why we can’t have nice things,” I say every time I spill.)

Should you consider Avocado furniture for your home?

So is Avocado’s furniture up to par with their iconic mattresses and bedding? I’ve been in the sustainability space for over nine years — and trust me, you’re not going to find a brand that matches artisanal quality with the certifications to back it up like Avocado. If you’re ready to invest in ultra-functional furniture, you’ll get more than what you pay for with these pieces from Avocado (luxury brands can cost way more than these, which helps me keep the pricing in perspective).

The price for each piece is an investment, but I truly feel these will be in my home and in my family for decades (my partner and I call the lounge chair the “grandpa chair,” and we imagine telling future generations stories by the fire from these seats). There are financing options through Affirm that can help you set up an affordable monthly payment plan. I’ve used Affirm for big purchases like couches, and it is a helpful way to furnish your home without a huge upfront financial investment.

Avocado’s furniture elevates my space to the point where I would feel confident hosting folks like my colleagues or my partner’s parents without scrambling for last-minute flimsy seating. I look forward to sharing my space with many friends and family as we move into 2026 and beyond — because we all just need a cup of coffee and a good chat in comfy chairs, right? Cheers!

It’s the details that make these pieces of furniture stand out from mainstream retailers. The three-pronged coffee table legs, the anti-slip slats on the lounge chair, the stunning burl wood on the side table legs, and of course — the seamless joinery that offers both stability and a touch of additional style.

We’ve reviewed dozens of nontoxic and organic pillows of various materials, sizes, shapes, and firmnesses over the years. These are seven standout options for side sleepers.

Do you find yourself frequently waking up with neck pain in the morning? Maybe the sleeping positions that used to present no problem are now making you sore as you age? We’ve been there.

That’s why we’re passionate about testing the best sleep products — mattresses, mattress toppers, pillows, sheets, bedding, luxury mattresses, and more — to help you get your best night’s rest ever. No one should have to just deal with neck pain, back pain, or any other discomforts ruining a good night’s sleep.

It turns out a new, high-quality pillow might be the only thing standing between you and totally relieved nighttime neck pain. Read on to learn more about side sleeper pillows, and how to choose one that’s nontoxic or organic.

Why consider nontoxic or organic pillows?

Most of the nontoxic and organic pillows we test get their buoyancy from latex — either shredded latex or a solid molded latex fill. Latex is completely natural and nontoxic, made from the sap of rubber trees, and it’s extremely durable — this means it won’t lose its shape over time the way synthetic foam will, so pillows made of latex last much longer than traditional pillows.

We also like to look for synthetic fill pillows that have been CertiPUR-US certified. This ensures that the foam isn’t offgassing dangerous levels of VOCs, and that it’s free from potentially harmful flame retardants and phthalates.

We look for pillows with organic covers, too — this natural material reduces your risk of exposure to potentially harmful chemicals found in synthetic fabric, and an organic certification ensures the cotton was grown safely and sustainably.

What should side sleepers look for in a pillow?

Side sleepers should look for pillows that are medium to firm to provide proper support, and a higher loft to support your neck and ensure proper spinal alignment. We also like pillows with a crescent or cutout shape for side sleepers, for a closer fit and more versatility. Latex is great for side sleepers since it provides a firmer yet bouncy support, as are adjustable pillows where you can customize the amount of fill to your liking.

How often do you need to replace your pillows?

You should replace your conventional pillows around every two years, especially if you’re someone who experiences allergies or if your pillows have been noticeably less supportive or are causing you neck pain. Latex pillows, however, can last up to five years or more, especially if you follow the care instructions. Latex is more dust- and allergen-resistant than synthetic fills, and it retains its shape better over time.

Our criteria:

We’ve slept on and researched nontoxic and organic pillows for years. For this guide, we selected the best options for side sleepers, considering the construction and materials used. We’ve also noted how the pillow will hold up over time, the environmental impact of the brand, and chosen options for various budgets. Our top picks are based on the below criteria, and we’ll continue to update this piece with emerging favorites.

  • NONTOXIC/ORGANIC | These brands use natural and organic materials so there’s no need to worry about off-gassing. None contain harsh flame retardants, and all are free from toxic chemical treatments. We also look for brands that are committed to not using PFAS in any of their production.
  • COMFORT | We’ve chosen the best options with materials, filling, and construction to meet the needs of side sleepers.
  • PRICE | Each of the brands we’ve included offers a fair value for the cost of the pillow. We considered durability, longevity, and ease of cleaning, too.
  • SUSTAINABILITY | The brands below have a variety of social-good and environmental initiatives, with traceable supply chains, so you can rest easy.

Greenguard certified
Made safe
OEKO-TEX® certified
Warranty offered

Best For | Cooling with charcoal
Organic Materials | FSC latex, organic cotton, charcoal
Firmness Available | Firm
Price starting at | $139

Avocado creates some of our favorite bedding and furniture products, pillows included. Our editor tested several of their pillows if you want to read more in depth about their different models, but her favorite was the Molded Latex Pillow. While at first it felt a bit too firm, she realized it gave her a deeper sleep because it provided the extra support she needed as a side sleeper. The pillow is made of an FSC-certified latex for a firmly buoyant feel, and the latex is baked with charcoal that gives it better temperature regulation along with moisture- and odor-control properties. It’s covered by certified organic cotton fabric, and the pillow is also GREENGUARD Gold and OEKO-TEX certified to ensure a safe final product that’s free of any toxic chemicals.

Our Editor’s Review | “After many nights of sound sleep thanks to Avocado, I’m excited to be going steady with their Molded Latex option. It gives my neck and shoulders the most overall balance and support I need while sleeping — especially while pregnant and only sleeping on my side. I experienced a profound difference in sleep quality with this pillow — a deeper, more supported sleep.” – Courtney Jay Higgins, Contributing Editor

2. Coyuchi

1% for the planet
Eco friendly packaging
Gives back
Natural materials
Woman owned

Best For | Firmer solid latex
Organic Materials | GOLS-certified latex, GOTS-certified cotton
Firmness Available | Medium-firm
Price starting at | $138

Coyuchi’s Molded Organic Latex Pillow is made of nothing but GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex covered in a removable organic sateen cotton protector. The latex has small holes for airflow, and it gives you a medium-firm support that feels even and resilient—the pillow is designed to retain its shape for years, and latex is naturally resistant to mold and dust mites. Coyuchi makes a few other organic latex pillows, too, including one made with shredded latex for a softer, more malleable fill, and one with indentations to relieve spinal pressure for back and side sleepers. We love Coyuchi for the way they balance total commitment to sustainability without sky-high price tags. All of their products are made with natural fibers and materials, and 99% are certified organic. They source from regenerative farms, and they even have a recycle program by which they repurpose or recycle any textiles you send back to them.

Customer Review | “This has been a game changer pillow for both of us, both side sleepers. I was suspicious but I’m glad I gave it a shot. No more flipping the pillow and squishing it when it gets deflated. Somehow it doesn’t get too hot. It’s just perfect all the time.” – Sleepy in Seattle (Read more reviews.)

3. Naturepedic

1% for the planet
American made
FSC
GOTS certified

Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Vegan
Warranty offered

Best For | Crescent shaped pillow
Organic Materials | GOLS or FSC latex, GOTS-certified cotton
Firmness Available | Soft to firm
Price starting at | $159

For side sleepers who suffer from tense shoulders, we recommend checking out Naturepedic’s Organic Side Sleeper Pillow. Its curved shape contours to your body and makes it easy to add extra pressure point relief wherever a side sleeper needs it — whether it’s your chest, shoulder, or back. Made of an organic cotton cover filled with shredded latex, the pillow is also adjustable, letting you add or remove filling to get to your ideal firmness and providing good loft and airflow. All the latex is either GOLS or FSC certified. The brand also makes a couple of more traditional latex pillow — one made of solid latex and with adjustable shredded latex fill. And, like all Naturepedic products, the pillows are made in the US with certified organic materials and packed in paper packaging.

Customer Review | “Absolutely love this pillow. I have suffered from neck pain for many many years and after just one night I noticed considerable relief. I have already recommended it to family and friends and bought my husband one as well. You will need a special pillow case to accommodate the shape but it’s well worth it!” – Porscha (Read more reviews.)

4. Nest Bedding

Family owned
Natural materials
Vegan
Warranty offered

Best For | Side sleepers who sleep hot
Organic Materials | CertiPUR-US fill, cotton inner pouch
Firmness Available | Soft to firm
Price starting at | $124

Here’s another side sleeper option — this Easy Breather Pillow from Nest also has adjustable fill, but instead of being filled with latex, it has a CertiPUR-US fill. The CertiPUR-US certification indicates polyurethane foam that meets strict health and safety standards, meaning it doesn’t offgas VOCs and it’s free from potentially harmful flame retardants and phthalates. The cooling pillow has an outer made of a cooling synthetic blend called Icecore — this, combined with the foam fill, gives you a cool-side-of-the-pillow feel all the time. It has a 100% cotton inner shell that’s overfilled with the CertiPUR-US fill, so you can adjust the pillow’s firmness. Its crescent shape makes it versatile for all sleepers, not just side sleepers. And, like all Nest products, it combines high-quality products and more sustainable materials, for bedding accessories that’ll last indefinitely.

Customer Review | “I was reluctant to spend so much for my side sleeper, but it has been one of my best decisions ever. I no longer shift my head around on a pillow to get comfortable. I no longer wake up during the night to do the same. My side sleep is comfortable from my head drop to my morning alarm.” – Jack D. (Read more reviews.)

5. Earthfoam

American made
Budget friendly
Fair trade
Family owned
GOTS certified
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Recycled materials
Warranty offered

Best For | Bouncier solid latex
Organic Materials | Fair trade latex, organic cotton
Firmness Available | Medium
Price starting at | $99

This Earthfoam pillow is the only one that the brand makes — but, according to them, it’s really the only one that you need. The natural latex foam pillow retains its shape no matter how much it’s used, and has a medium to firm feel that’s great for back or side sleepers, or anyone who wants a little more loft to their pillow. They use Talalay latex, which is sourced from their fair trade network and results in a softer, springier product (as opposed to Dunlop latex, which is firmer and usually used more for mattresses). This natural latex core is perforated with holes for breathability and covered in nothing but organic cotton — the inner liner is a stretchy cotton, and the outer liner is removable and washable. The pillow even comes with free shipping, free returns, and a 5-year warranty.

Customer Review | “I’m a side and back sleeper and I love a medium firm pillow. This pillow is pretty awesome and fits a lot of needs. It is bouncy and soft…The height is not as scary as you think. Sleeping on this is just so reliable since it is bouncy, it doesn’t give you the sinking feeling. You don’t have to constantly re-fluff or re-adjust.” – Claire G. (Read more reviews.)

6. Coop

American made
Budget friendly
Greenguard certified
Natural materials
Warranty offered

Best For | A cutout pillow for neck support
Organic Materials | CertiPUR-US certified foam
Firmness Available | Medium-soft to medium-firm
Price starting at | $89

Coop also makes an adjustable pillow that comes in a crescent-shaped option, designed for side sleepers. But we’re actually recommending this pillow for its other shapes — the original, in a classic pillow shape, and the cut-out, which has a more dramatic half-circle shaped cut out than the crescent does, designed to reduce the gap between your neck and the pillow and help relieve back and neck pain. The pillow has a supportive nontoxic, CertiPUR-US certified, virgin memory foam fill that you can remove or add to adjust the pillow’s firmness. It’s covered in a case of super breathable Lulltra™ fabric, made of 60% polyester and 40% bamboo viscose, and the whole pillow is machine washable.

Customer Review | “I got the cut out original pillow and fell in love with it. My sleep has been better than ever and I wake up without the back and neck pain that I once had. I let my sister try it out one night and she hasn’t given it back, so I will be buying another one. My dog loves the cut out because she fits perfectly in it and lays her head on the pillow.” – Erin B. (Read more reviews.)

7. Saatva

Natural materials
Warranty offered

Best For | High loft
Organic Materials | Shredded latex, organic cotton
Firmness Available | Medium
Price starting at | $165

Saatva is one of our favorite brands for bedding — their products are luxury, made in the US, and always prioritize natural and sustainable materials. Their Latex Pillow comes in two loft options: standard and high. The standard loft option measures four to five inches tall and is best for back and stomach sleepers, so for side sleepers, we recommend the high loft option that’s six to seven inches tall. Both pillows have a shredded latex core for buoyant, breathable, hypoallergenic support that won’t sink over time. The latex core is insulated in a layer of plush, down-like microfiber fill, and it’s all encased in an organic cotton cover. The result is a pillow made of super high quality, nontoxic materials that’s been engineered for perfect comfort and support — and to last for a long time to come.

Customer Review | “I just ordered our 3rd pair of this pillow. There is a perfect balance between softness and comfort. They hold up pretty well and offer the support we need for back and neck pain. My 4 year old requested to have one after sleeping on our pillows!” – Fera G. (Read more reviews.)
