We’ve kept dry in many sustainable raincoats over the years — these are our top picks for women’s raincoats that are verifiably waterproof and PFAS-free.

Staying dry in downpours can feel a bitlike an Olympic sport. Alas, rain is an inevitable part of life. But worsening climate change also means more precipitation in the future, so we’ll need to protect ourselves against the elements.

Whether you’re a city gal trying to walk your dog or a country girl heading out in a storm to work outdoors, a good raincoat is a must. But most waterproof raincoats contain PFAS and PFCs and that’s not always the safest or most sustainable option. 🌧️

What are PFAS — and why are they in my raincoat?

When it comes to sustainable waterproof jackets, going PFAS-free is quickly becoming the gold standard. PFAS — short for “per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances” — are synthetic chemicals traditionally used to create the water-repellent finishes on raincoats and other outdoor gear. While they do a great job of keeping rain and snow at bay, they’re also incredibly persistent in the environment and have been linked to hormone disruption, certain cancers, and other health concerns. Because of this, more brands are starting to rethink their waterproofing methods and work toward PFAS-free alternatives.

That said, the outdoor apparel industry is still in the middle of that transition, and many brands haven’t fully eliminated PFAS just yet. In the meantime, there are still plenty of ways to choose a more sustainable raincoat. Jackets made with recycled materials, lower-impact manufacturing, and durable designs that last for years can all make a meaningful difference. While PFAS-free waterproofing is the ultimate benchmark to look for, these other sustainability efforts are still a big step in the right direction when it comes to shopping for eco-friendlier rain gear.

Our criteria

Our editors have worn and researched dozens of raincoats — and vetted thousands of customer reviews — to select our favorites from sustainable brands. We regularly update this list with new favorites that meet our criteria:

 • WATERPROOF | All of the brands below have waterproof or water-resistant styles, made possible by PFAS/PFC-free finishes and/or sustainable materials. Some designs include additional layers or padding for extra dryness, too.
 • NONTOXIC | Most of these brands are verifiably free from PFAS and PFCs, with all carrying certifications ensuring they are safe for human use.
 • ECO-FRIENDLY | The majority of brands below are using upcycled or recycled materials, like plastic water bottles or fishnets rescued from ocean waste, to be as eco-friendly as possible.

If you’re in the mood to shop more sustainable all-weather wear, check out our guide to jackets and coats for cooler weather and our favorite brands for sustainable footwear.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We’ve personally tested and researched dozens of nontoxic self-tanner lotions and self-tanning products — these are our editor’s top picks for safe, clean, and streak-free options at a range of price points.

We crave the feeling of the hot sun on our skin and the afterglow of a good tan, although our idea of tan and what actually happens (i.e., skin turns red, burns, peels, then freckles back to normal) are two different things. This is where self-tanner comes in. Get the glow without the burn, UV damage, and subsequent wrinkles. But what you use to get your glow is super important.

Why use nontoxic self-tanner?

A study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that skin absorbs an average of 64% of contaminants. Typical self-tanners contain toxic ingredients, including mineral oil (a petroleum-based product that blocks pores and can be carcinogenic); sodium hydroxymethylglycinate which may break down into formaldehyde; isopropyl myristate which may bind to skin as nitrate (a carcinogen); amyl acetate which is sometimes used as a paint and lacquer solvent (gross); octyl stearate, an irritant that blocks pores; and other artificial fragrances and dyes made of petrochemicals.

Since none of us wants our largest organ covered in potentially cancer-causing chemicals, not to mention the nasty smell of DHA, we’ve rounded up the best nontoxic tanning lotions to keep your summer glow without the toxic load.

Our criteria:

Our editors have tested, researched, and scoured thousands of customer reviews to determine the very best natural skincare brands. These brands are organic, chemical-free, and luxurious, and they come at a variety of prices. We update this list regularly with emerging favorites that meet the criteria below.

 • NATURAL/ORGANIC | Each of these self-tanners is made with clean, natural, and organic ingredients that are safe and nourishing for your skin.
 • EFFICACY | We’ve tested and researched the best self-tanners to ensure their formulas are effective and will give you the glow you desire (without the streaks!).
 • AFFORDABILITY | Natural beauty can be expensive! We’ve included self-tanner brands that are easy on the wallet, so we can all benefit from the products.

Don’t forget the sunscreen! Just because you have a tan doesn’t mean you can forgo lathering up. Here are our favorite nontoxic and mineral sunscreens (and face sunscreens, too).

1. Lux Unfiltered

The accessories line is impressive: an exfoliating mitt, soft velvet tanning mitt, back tan applicator, face kabuki brush, and a body kabuki brush. Customer Review | “This is such a reliable glowy tan. Exactly what I wanted for my bridal shower (see pictures!). I use the medium color and it’s perfect. Sometimes if I have drier patches of skin it looks blotchy upon application, but it always comes out super even, so don’t be alarmed at first! When you rinse off, there’s usually an initial layer of “brown” tint that rinses off, then almost a “green” tint when you use soap. So make sure to use soap as well if you’ll be wearing light colored clothes! This is so worth it!” – Haley (Read all reviews.)

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We’ve researched our favorite sustainable jewelry brands for the best amethyst jewelry pieces — these are our top picks for their fairly sourced materials and timeless design.

February’s birthstone is the amethyst, the purple-hued quartz crystal famous for its healing properties, namely for headaches, fatigue, and anxiety. The name itself comes from the Greek “amethystos,” which means “remedy for drunkenness,” and might be why it has long been associated with Bacchus, the God of wine. Once rare enough to only be available to royalty, the stone is now more common, though still impressive with a dramatic color range of pale lilac to deep eggplant.

What does amethyst symbolize?

Amethyst has been attributed with various symbolic meanings throughout history. It’s often seen as a stone of protection, purification, and tranquility. Its calming energy is believed to promote emotional balance and inner peace, which is great for use during meditation and spiritual practices! It’s also linked to wisdom, intuition, and clarity of mind, helping to boost decision-making. Moreover, amethyst has been connected to physical healing and is believed to alleviate stress, insomnia, and headaches, while also stimulating the immune system. Gifting this birthstone or acquiring one for yourself can emphasize inner spirituality, healing, and inner harmony, making it a gift to be cherished by all our February babes.

Our team has reviewed hundreds of sustainable jewelry brands, and we’ve selected our favorite amethyst birthstone necklaces, rings, bracelets, and earrings from the brands below based on eco-friendly production practices, fairly sourced materials, and quality design.

So go on, treat yourself (or your favorite February birthday pal!) to one of these beauties!

And if you’re on the hunt for a different gemstone, we’ve got you covered with our guides for our top aquamarine, emerald, and garnet jewelry pieces!

The post 10 Best Sustainable Underwear Brands (2026 Review) appeared first on The Good Trade.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

I got intimate with dozens of sustainable underwear and lingerie brands — these are my favorite options made from natural and organic materials by ethical brands.

In 7th grade, I got my first bra. I was so embarrassed about needing one that I stalled as long as I could with tank tops that had built-in ones until my mom insisted on something real. By then, I was a 32B, and what I brought home was shiny and wired. The next day at school, I felt exposed, and a few kids whispered, wondering if I’d stuffed my bra.

It’s funny to look back on that vulnerable moment now as I confidently review ten bra and underwear brands on the internet. I’m pleasantly surprised by how many supportive, flattering options exist — and how many are made from healthy, sustainable materials instead of the polyester blends I wore in middle school… and let’s be real, into adulthood.

I’ve always heard that good underwear can boost your confidence, but honestly, it’s never been top of mind for me. Before this review, my drawer was basically a lineup of black bralettes and black thongs: A minimalist system that made getting dressed automatic. And the thong thing? Pure practicality. My logic’s simple. If the underwear’s going to end up there anyway, I might as well start there.

But after testing so many “new-to-me” brands, I’m happy to report that I’ve finally found some wedgie-free briefs and colorful bralettes that have officially expanded my underwear horizons. I’m pleased to say, I’m currently wearing a purple set as we speak.

Why consider sustainable underwear and lingerie?

Opting for sustainable underwear and lingerie is a great choice for both your health and the environment. Rather than making intimates with conventional materials, which often have unwanted chemicals and pesticides, sustainable brands prioritize natural and recycled materials that are made with less harmful chemicals and dyes. Lingerie and underwear made with sustainable fabrics like organic cotton, hemp, and bamboo are gentler for our skin and nether regions as they are naturally hypoallergenic, breathable, and reduce the risk of any allergic reactions.

Underwear and lingerie made with natural and skin-safe materials also help reduce exposure to PFAS, harmful “forever chemicals” often found in synthetic fabrics and treated textiles. PFAS can accumulate in the body, potentially leading to health risks like hormone disruption and immune system effects. Sustainable brands prioritize nontoxic, natural, and certified safe materials, minimizing the risk of PFAS exposure while also protecting the environment from chemical pollution.

Turns out, there’s real science behind why breathable, natural fabrics matter. Organic cotton and other plant-based materials help keep things balanced down there: Less moisture, fewer chemicals, and way less chance of irritation or infection compared to the polyester blends that are the norm for conventional underwear.

What should you look for in natural and nontoxic lingerie?

Wearing fabrics without microplastics is especially important for your bras, since synthetic fibers can shed tiny plastic particles that not only irritate sensitive skin but also end up in your body and the environment over time.

The brands I checked out use materials like organic cotton, bamboo, and even OKEO-TEX certified silk. My biggest takeaway? You don’t need synthetics to make fabrics that are soft, luxurious, supportive — and actually comfy.

To help further avoid PFAS and other harmful chemicals and dyes in our intimates, here are the certifications we like to look for to ensure we’re putting only the safest and healthiest fabrics on our skin:

 • OEKO-TEX® STANDARD 100: This independent certification system tests for harmful substances, including PFAS, ensuring textiles are safe for skin contact.
 • GOTS: A textile that is GOTS-certified meets the Global Organic Textile Standard, which includes the prohibition of PFAS and environmentally friendly processing.
 • Bluesign®: This system ensures responsible chemical use and bans PFAS in certified textiles.

By purchasing your underwear and lingerie from a sustainable brand, you’ll be supporting ethical and eco-friendly brands that put the health of our planet (and our intimate areas!) first.

Our criteria:

For my testing process, I wore these sustainable underwear brands everywhere — working from home, to dinner, coffee dates, workout classes, and even on a plane. With bras, I was paying attention to support, shape, comfort, and that all-important “barely there” feel. For underwear, I was on the hunt for no wedgies, no visible lines, and no tight elastic — comfort that makes you forget you’re even wearing them.

Our team has researched and tested dozens of brands and scoured thousands of customer reviews for this round-up of our favorite sustainable underwear and intimates. We update this list regularly with emerging favorites that meet our criteria:

 • ORGANIC/NONTOXIC | Organic and nontoxic materials are used by each of these brands to make the comfiest and cleanest undies.
 • ETHICAL/FAIR TRADE | Each brand adheres to strict ethical and fair trade practices in the sourcing and manufacturing of their garments.
 • CERTIFICATIONS | We’ve ensured each one of these sustainable lingerie and underwear brands meets one or more of the following certifications, ensuring they are free from harmful chemicals like PFAS: OEKO-TEX® certified, GOTS-certified, or Bluesign® approved.
 • SIZE INCLUSIVITY | We’ve made sure to prioritize sustainable brands that are size inclusive, so everyone can enjoy safe and sustainable lingerie.

Once you’ve checked out our favorite sustainable lingerie brands, step up your next layer of comfies with our guides to the best sustainable athletic wear and pajamas. Don’t forget to stock up on these PFAS-free period undies, too!

Best For | Everyday cotton underwear
Materials | Organic cotton, elastane

Prices Start At | $35 for bras, $16 for underwear

Pact’s cotton basics help make the world a better place. This ethical brand goes to great lengths to make sure its entire supply chain — from the planting of organic cotton to the final sewing and everything in between — is as clean and responsible as possible. This super-soft underwear uses certified organic cotton (with a small blend of elastane for longevity and fit) and is finished in certified Fair Trade factories. Don’t sleep on the multipacks and fun patterns!

Editor review: I was genuinely surprised by how flattering Pact’s lace thong set was — the bralette gave me some serious lift! Some lace can feel cheap or itchy, but Pact’s is soft and actually feels good on your skin. I also tried their Everyday Classic Fit Bikini underwear and loved that you can pull them up to make them a little more high-waisted or let them sit low on your hips. The cotton fabric feels breathable and ultra-light, and the elastic doesn’t pinch or feel constricting. I love that they come in an affordable 5-pack for everyday wear.

2. Organic Basics

B corp
Budget friendly
Cruelty free
GOTS certified
Natural materials
Recycled materials
Vegan

Best For | Affordable underwear
Materials | Organic cotton, Tencel™ Lyocell, recycled nylon, elastane

Prices Start At | $30 for bras, $12 for underwear

Organic Basics lives up to the motto of “Basically Better Made” with its incredible everyday essentials. The team first and foremost focuses on sustainable materials — like regenerative organic cotton and TENCEL — as well as ethical production. From bras to briefs, the brand also offers multipacks of its most-loved sets and pieces, so that you can easily make the switch to a more sustainable underwear drawer!

Editor review: Organic Basic’s Core Rib Tank Bralette felt supportive and breathable on a hike — and the website doesn’t mention this, but I’ve even worn it backwards, which gives a slightly deeper scoop neck and looks great! I also tried and love their Core Triangle Bra, which is definitely in my top three favorites. The fabric is soft, there are no clasps, and I love that you can adjust the straps. For underwear, I tried the Core Rib High-Leg Briefs, which give plenty of coverage, and the Soft Touch Veil Thong, which honestly feels like you’re not wearing anything at all.

3. Quince

Budget friendly
Eco friendly packaging
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Plastic/Pfas free

Best For | Multipacks
Materials | Organic cotton, cotton, modal, rayon, nylon
Size Range | XS – XL
Prices Start At | $25 for bras, $30 for underwear

Quince is all about bringing us the highest quality, all-natural clothing at affordable prices, and they’ve nailed it when it comes to their underwear and bra collections! Crafted with materials like OEKO-TEX certified organic cotton and micromodal, you’ll experience the softest, most breathable fabrics on your delicate regions. Did we mention that their underwear sets start at $30 for a 6-pack?! We’ll be stocking up on these conscious and comfy essentials.

Editor review: I tried the Stretch Lace Sweetheart Bralette in both colors — and I definitely liked it more in black. The tan wasn’t as flattering on my skin tone. The lace is soft and held up nicely in the wash, though I will say the tags are a little bulky and need to be cut off for comfort. For underwear, I tried the Stretch Lace Cheeky Brief – they look and feel beautiful to the touch, but just didn’t work for me. I have a rounder backside, and these gave me an instant wedgie. Would definitely work better on a flatter behind.

4. MATE the Label

1% for the planet
American made
B corp
Circular fashion
Climate neutral
Eco friendly packaging
GOTS certified
Natural materials
Woman owned

Best For | Full-coverage underwear
Materials | Organic cotton, spandex
Size Range | XS – 2XL; up to US 12
Prices Start At | $38 for bras, $28 for underwear

Pesticides and synthetics are a thing of the past with MATE the Label’s intimates collection. The brand crafts its soft and airy undies and loungewear sets with natural and nontoxic materials. Breathable organic cotton and low-impact dyes are used to make MATE’s signature underwear in a variety of flattering cuts and rises. Whether you’re looking for comfy high-rise briefs or a mid-rise bikini, all the pieces are cut, sewn, and dyed in their downtown Los Angeles factory. Not only that, MATE is climate-neutral and ships all their garments in eco-friendly packaging. Score!

Editor review: Mate’s Tencel Wireless Comfort Bra was one of my favorites for everyday wear. It has double-layered support — which you can really feel — because it smoothes and supports nicely under a tee. The adjustable hook-and-eye closure and straps make it feel totally customizable. I also tried the Organic Comfort Scoop Bralette, which is super soft and perfect for lounging around the house. For underwear, the Tencel Comfort High-Rise Cheeky Briefs were too full coverage for me under pants, but they’re silky smooth and great for bedtime. The Organic Comfort Mid-Rise Bikini was another nice everyday basic, made with materials you can feel good about.

5. Embrace

BIPOC Owned
Eco friendly packaging
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Size inclusive
Small business
Woman owned

Best For | Maternity, wireless
Materials | Supima organic cotton, micromodal, elastane
Size Range | XS-XL
Prices Start At | $60 for bras, $28 for underwear

Embrace makes nursing bras and underwear that actually feel and look good. The founder, Claire, couldn’t find anything soft, supportive, and made from natural fabrics, so she designed her own — she even spent a full year developing fabric from some of the finest yarns in the world. Embrace uses plant-based materials like US Supima cotton and Austrian Micromodal, skip the underwire, and focus on thoughtful details like padded, convertible straps. The bras also have removable padding for extra support and shape. Everything’s designed with care — from tag-free fabrics to sustainable materials. And they’ve branched out into non-nursing bras and underwear — which I tested and LOVED for this review — that are truly premium and flattering.

Editor Review | Embrace’s Lounge Bra is insanely soft, supportive, and flattering. It gives me shape and lift that I didn’t know was possible without wires. Better yet, the straps are so comfortable, I forget I’m wearing anything. Their High Leg Brief is my new go-to underwear for sleep and lounging – I love that it’s made of breathable 100% organic cotton. It was intentionally designed with a little more coverage, a lower risk of wedgies, and without cutting off your legs – two huge factors for me. I had never heard of Embrace, so I’m surprised that it’s become a top favorite. I even want to order more colors!

6. Araks

American made
Circular fashion
GOTS certified
Gives back
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Recycled materials
Size inclusive
Woman owned

Best For | Lingerie
Materials | Upcycled & organic cotton, plant-dyed organic linen, RECONYL, ECONYL®, stretch lace, washed silk
Size Range | XXXS – XXXL
Prices Start At | $90 for bras, $40 for underwear

New York-based brand Araks has been consciously crafting ethical and sustainable lingerie since 2000. Each piece is made locally in their women-owned NYC production facilities (all of which they started!). Araks is intentional about their footprint and fabric usage, ensuring each scrap and swatch is saved for use in future collections. Each of Araks lingerie pieces is also made with high quality, luxury fabrics like cotton crepe from Italy and washed silk from Korea, and uses non-AZO, botanical, or GOTS-certified dyes for rich colors without the synthetics.

Editor review: The Antonia Bralette and Stella Thong make a perfect set – a nice balance of comfortable, feminine, and sexy. If you prefer a brief, the Isabella Panty works beautifully too. Everything is impeccably made by hand, which shows in the details, down to the playful crochet scalloped trim. Araks has tons of fun colorways that feel unique and sophisticated – definitely a great option if you’re looking for lingerie that feels a little more elevated.

7. TomboyX

B corp
Budget friendly
Gender inclusive
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Recycled materials
Size inclusive
Small business
Woman owned

Best For | Gender-inclusive undergarments
Materials | Organic cotton, cotton, TENCEL™ Modal, recycled nylon, spandex, recycled poly
Size Range | 3XS – 6X
Prices Start At | $24 for bras, $16 for underwear

TGT team favorite TomboyX makes size- and gender-inclusive undergarments so comfy you’ll want to replace your whole underwear drawer. This B-Corp works with WRAP and Fair Labor Association-certified manufacturers and uses materials like Tencel, OEKO-Tex-certified cotton, and recycled polyester blends. (We especially love the Tencel line, it’s so soft!) Whether you’re looking for cute racerback sports bras for working out, boxer briefs for lounging around, or even period and tucking underwear, TomboyX has you covered.

Editor review: TomboyX’s Low Cut Soft Bra was so comfortable, I left it on for the rest of the day the first time I tried it. I even wore it as a sports bra with leggings and an open button-down on a 3-mile walk with a friend. The fabric is insanely soft and feels really well-made. I also tried their Essentials Soft Bra, which is a great high-coverage option. For underwear, I tried the boy shorts — they’re definitely cute, but cut my legs off in an unflattering way, so I’ll be giving them to my sister. I also tried their Tencel black thong, which is just as high quality as the bras… the silky-soft waistband stays put and feels amazing.

8. Oddobody

Eco friendly packaging
Fair trade
GOTS certified
Natural materials
Woman owned

Best For | Comfy, breathable underwear & loungewear
Materials | Organic cotton
Size Range | XS – XXXL
Prices Start At | $45 for bras, $22 for underwear

The founders of Oddobody created their brand on the single enduring rule their mothers taught them growing up: Underwear should be cotton. The breathable, compostable fabric is ideal for healthy vulvas, so every pair is made from the highest quality, 100% GOTS certified organic cotton. With soft fabrics and comfortable fits (no riding!), Oddobody is one of our favorite underwear brands for lounging and sleeping. As a PBC, the brand is committed to opening up dialogues about our bodies, so each purchase comes with an artfully made body manual that offers body-related educational content (think an intro to the pelvic floor, vulva care, and female sexual pleasure) through collaborations with experts. So cool!

Editor review: Oddobody’s pieces feel like true cotton classics. Their Mid-Rise French Cut underwear actually makes me feel like a chic Parisian, with elongated legs and a high-waisted front. I also tried and loved their Triangle Bra, which I wore comfortably on a 6-hour plane ride (usually I have to unclasp). Their Shelf Bra is cute and comfy too — perfect for walks, hikes, or gentle yoga. I also tried their Cotton Thong, which is great under jeans. I love that Oddobody’s pieces don’t have big tags or text — just a small, cute emblem of their logo.

9. KENT

1% for the planet
American made
Biodegradable
Budget friendly
Circular fashion
Climate neutral
Eco friendly packaging
GOTS certified
Natural materials
OEKO-TEX® certified
Plastic/Pfas free
Size inclusive
Vegan
Woman owned

Best For | Vegan & plastic-free intimates
Materials | Organic pima cotton
Size Range | XS – 3XL
Prices Start At | $24 for underwear

KENT’s 100% compostable and plastic-free undies are innovation at its finest. The brand uses the cleanest materials on earth and has high standards for each of its basics and undergarments to help reverse climate change. Each plant-based undie is 100% organic, nontoxic, vegan, and “plantable” (right down to the thread). Even the packaging is plant-based and compostable! Once your underwear reaches the end of its life, KENT’s guide on “Planting Your Pants” will have them fully composted in just 90 days.

Editor review: Even before trying Kent, the fact that they’re 100% biodegradable, with no plastic whatsoever, was super intriguing to me. I tried their Organic Supima Cotton Scoop Soft Bra, which has a not-too-thick, not-too-thin feel — it’s soft cotton on the front and back with breathable organic cotton pointelle sides. Their Compostable Organic Cotton Bikini and Thong are comfortable and feel durable. I love that they can be composted, especially since underwear is something you’ll definitely need to replace over time.

10. PROCLAIM

Their commitment to ethical manufacturing means fair wages, safe working conditions, and local production in Los Angeles whenever possible, with additional eco-conscious partnerships in Peru and Portugal. They also minimize waste with smart design, circular knitting, and responsible water use, all while offering an impressive line of nude intimates inclusive to all skin tones. 👏🏻👏🏽👏🏿

Editor review: Proclaim has some great high-coverage options and an impressive range of shades and sizes. Their Organic Cotton Square Neck Bralette feels high-quality and super soft – though the seam in the middle of the bra cuts across the bottom of my chest, which may not bother everyone, but I don’t love. Their Organic Cotton Mid- and High-Rise Underwear feels nicely substantial and holds up well in the wash. I’m excited to try them on my period, since the full coverage is perfect for that.

9 Best Organic Body Lotions With Clean Ingredients https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/all-natural-body-lotion/ https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/all-natural-body-lotion/#comments Tue, 10 Mar 2026 23:27:38 +0000 https://www.thegoodtrade.com/all-natural-body-lotion/ Our editor tested these all-natural and organic body lotions for nourishing skin hydration you can feel good about in any season.

The post 9 Best Organic Body Lotions With Clean Ingredients appeared first on The Good Trade.

]]>
The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

I tested the best natural and nontoxic body lotion on my sensitive skin. Here are my favorites that are clean, moisturizing, and easy to apply.

As the weather changes, so do our skin concerns — from sunburn in the summertime to the dry flakiness that comes with colder temperatures. And since our skin absorbs the majority of lotions and creams we put onto it, it’s essential to be mindful of the ingredients in our personal care products.

Why use organic body lotion?

Using organic body lotion is a great way to nourish your skin without exposing it to harsh chemicals or synthetic ingredients. Organic lotions made with natural ingredients like plant oils, butters, and essential oils, are gentler and more beneficial for your skin — especially if it’s sensitive. Plus, they often contain fewer additives and preservatives, reducing the chances of irritation or allergic reactions. To ensure your body lotion is made with clean ingredients, keep an eye out for synthetic fragrances and hormone-disrupting chemicals, like phthalates and parabens. You’ll want to avoid these whenever possible.

Fortunately, we’ve found the best natural and nutrient-rich lotion formulas, many of which are safe for the entire family. I’ve spent weeks testing each one, making notes on each. For nourishing skin hydration that you can feel good about all season long, keep on reading!

What should you look for when shopping clean body lotion?

When shopping for an organic body lotion that prioritizes safety and sustainability it’s important to consider both the ingredients and the third-party certifications the brand has acquired. Look for ingredients like nutrient-rich plant oils (e.g. jojoba, coconut, argon), soothing botanical extracts (e.g. chamomile, calendula, aloe vera), natural moisturizers like shea and cocoa butter, and key antioxidants like vitamin E, green tea extract, and rosehip oil. Reputable certifications to watch for include USDA Organic, Ecocert, COSMOS, NATRUE, and Leaping Bunny. Generally, avoid formulas that contain synthetic fragrances (labeled “fragrance” or “parfum”) and dyes, parabens, phthalates, and alcohols, which can dry out skin.

It’s also important to consider your preferences regarding feel and fragrance. Do you enjoy a lotion that is lightweight? Or a hearty balm that is deeply nourishing? Lotions have a thinner consistency and will typically run down one’s arm if gravity is left to its own devices, whereas a body butter is much thicker and stays put until it’s rubbed in. As for fragrance, I personally prefer an unscented moisturizer as it is easiest on sensitive skin. However, if you prefer a scented lotion, opt for one that’s formulated with plant-derived essential oils or other natural aromatic compounds.

A note on plastic packaging:

While it might seem like the most sustainable thing to do would be to cut out plastic packaging altogether and put our cosmetics in either glass or compostable containers, the truth is that it’s complicated. For example, glass is heavy, leading to higher CO2 emissions in transit, and compostable packaging is permeable, compromising the longevity of natural and organic ingredients. Packaging products in recycled plastic cuts down on CO2 emissions during transport (and thus, cost), and lends itself to safety (shatterproof) and functionality (durable). Additionally, brands that refrain from using preservatives in their formulations require airtight containers to prevent their natural ingredients from becoming rancid or evaporating, which makes compostable packaging not a great fit either. When it comes to sustainability, it’s important to dig into a brand’s specific ethos, history, and long-term environmental goals.

Our criteria:

A collection of skincare and body care products, including lotions, creams, and a jar, arranged on a white surface in natural light.
I tested 9 nontoxic body lotions on my sensitive skin. Read on for my experience with each!

We’ve used, researched, and reviewed clean beauty and skincare for years. These are our favorite organic body lotions that use natural ingredients and are super moisturizing. Even those with sensitive skin (like me!) will find options on this list. We regularly update our guide with new picks that meet the criteria below.

 • ORGANIC | We’ve selected options that use organic ingredients so you can be sure nothing was treated with harmful chemicals at any point in the process.
 • NATURAL INGREDIENTS | These brands use natural ingredients like almond, black currant, and calendula to supercharge their formulas while avoiding parabens, phthalates, or artificial fragrance.
 • MOISTURIZING | We’ve personally used these brands and found that their formulas are super hydrating and never harmful.

Don’t forget that cleansing and caring for our bodies pre-lotion can also help improve the appearance of skin over time. For your best skin yet, add these natural body washes, and soft, organic towels to your body care routine. Looking for organic face lotion? Kate’s Review | “I’ve reached for Osea’s body butter above all others, particularly for my legs post-shower, and it leaves my perpetually dry skin quenched for nearly 24 hours. As for their body lotion, the formula feels weightless and refreshing – I love this option for my hands. Osea’s signature Undria aroma is truly divine, and is formulated with a combination of grapefruit, lime, and cypress essential oils. All too often, effective lotions and moisturizers for melanin-rich skin are hard to find, but not anymore, thanks to Buttah’s Whipped Body Butter. Kate’s Review | “Anyone looking for a high-performing and ultra-moisturizing option, True Botanical’s body butter will leave you feeling and smelling like you’ve just been to the spa. The post 11 Best Nontoxic Laundry Detergents (2026 Editor Review) appeared first on The Good Trade.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

I personally tested 11 natural and organic laundry detergents to ensure they’re effective, easy to use, and non-irritating.

I’ve always had sensitive skin — since I was a kid, regular laundry detergents made me feel itchy, dry, and overall uncomfortable. The only detergent I’ve ever used (up until now!) was a big brand Free & Clear formula, but as I’ve learned more about the ingredients in those big brands, I’ve wondered what nontoxic options were out there that would be better for my skin and my overall well-being.

I personally tried out these 9 natural, organic, nontoxic laundry detergents. And I’ll admit, I wondered whether they’d make my clothes truly feel clean and how the scented detergents would affect me as someone who’s only ever used unscented Free & Clear. But I am thrilled to share that each of these laundry detergents was genuinely great for both my clothes and my sensitive skin.

Why consider a natural laundry detergent?

Conventional laundry detergents often contain chemicals like VOCs (volatile organic compounds), SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), optical brighteners, and other toxic chemicals that are not only bad for us, but for the environment too. They also often contain dyes, artificial fragrances, surfactants (chemicals that help water penetrate the fabric), and even preservatives like formaldehyde that can irritate the skin and cause allergic reactions. The nontoxic, natural, and organic laundry detergents on this list are free from these harsh chemicals and use natural (many of them mineral and plant-based) ingredients that get the job done, and done well.

Our criteria and methodology:

The Good Trade’s editors hand-selected the best natural laundry detergents on the market and I personally tested all of them, as pictured below. For each, I smeared peanut butter onto a white tea towel and washed it to see how well it came out. I washed them all on medium heat with the recommended amount of laundry detergent for each brand. The peanut butter smudge came out of the towels with all of the detergents, though some smelled more refreshing than others. I also washed my clothes with each of the detergents and wore them to see how they felt and smelled during wear.

A variety of eco-friendly laundry detergents in different packaging are displayed on a wooden floor against a neutral wall.
We chose each of these laundry detergents for their natural, nontoxic ingredients and tested them for their cleaning power, fresh scents, and to make sure they made our clothes soft without irritating our skin.

We regularly update this list with emerging favorites that meet the following criteria.

 • NATURAL & ORGANIC | Made with organic, nontoxic, and natural ingredients, these laundry detergents are great for us and our loved ones — and for the planet!
 • EFFECTIVE | These laundry detergents not only are good for you, but they also are good at removing stains and odors from your laundry. All of the detergents were effective at completely removing stains from our trusty peanut butter smear test.
 • PLEASANT SCENT | These nontoxic laundry detergents don’t sacrifice a fresh smell. They keep your clothes, towels, and sheets smelling — and feeling — fresh without any added irritation. Take it from me as someone with sensitive skin.
 • FEEL | Whether it’s towels or clothes, these laundry detergents make the fabric feel soft, clean, and comfortable. I’ve made notes on my experience below.
White, crumpled fabric pieces laid out in rows on a flat surface.
I smudged peanut butter on each of these tea towels to test each brand’s cleaning power — and they all passed!

Best For | Eco-friendly laundry detergent pods
Features | Works in all washers (including HE), removes odors, fights stains, works in all temperatures
Available At | Dropps.com; Wegmans
Price | $29+

Dropps are easy-to-use, USDA Certified Biobased laundry pods that are dye-free, phthalates-free, and come in recyclable FSC-certified packaging. They offer two scent options — Crisp Breeze and Lavender Meadow — as well as a Free & Clear detergent. The B Corp company is committed to sustainability, offers carbon-neutral shipping, and uses concentrated formulas that use minimal water.

For my test, I used the Crisp Breeze scent. A small load needs just one pod, which successfully washed out all the peanut butter from the tea towel, leaving behind no stains and a soft, crisp smell. It also felt clean and crisp to the touch. The shirt I washed with Dropps was comfortable to wear and smelled fresh but not overpowering. I loved how easy Dropps were to use and how fresh they made my laundry feel.

Best For | Sensitive skin laundry detergent
Features | Allergen-friendly, high-efficiency formula, pump bottle, hypoallergenic, space-saving bottle
Available At | Puracy.com; Amazon; Select Walmart and Target stores
Price | $20 (Refill pouch $36)

Puracy’s natural laundry detergent is made from over 99% natural ingredients, including natural fragrances. The concentrated formula comes in a pump bottle — one pump for small loads, two for regular and large loads — and offers refill pouches to reduce single-use plastic. Because its formula is 10 times as concentrated as regular detergents, it’s also reducing packaging, water use, and energy waste. Puracy’s nontoxic natural laundry detergent was developed by doctors for people with sensitive skin and allergies, so it’s hypoallergenic and free from toxic chemicals like sulfates, phosphates, dyes, and optical brighteners. Puracy offers a Free & Clear option, as well as Fresh Linen, which is made from natural fragrances.

I tried the Free & Clear laundry detergent for my test. I used one pump for the load, and it got the peanut butter stain out, leaving the towel feeling clean. In both the towel and the shirt I washed, it didn’t really smell like anything, which is what I’d hope for with a Free & Clear formula. I love how the pump bottle is easy to use and small, making it a great option for small spaces.

3. Dedcool

Best For | Sophisticated fragranced laundry detergent
Features | Gentle, recyclable aluminum packaging, genderless scent
Available At | Dedcool.com
Price | $35

Dedcool is a “functional fragrance brand” — the company creates signature fragrances that can be applied to different areas of your life, like laundry detergents. And the laundry detergents are made from nontoxic, biodegradable ingredients and come in scents like Milk (amber, bergamot, white musk), Taunt (bergamot, vanilla, amber), Spring (incense, moss, bergamot), and more. The detergents can be used in the washing machine or for hand-washing, and they come in adorable recyclable aluminum packaging with little doodles on it. Dedcool is carbon neutral through carbon offsets with Terrapass, and the brand donates a portion of its proceeds to 1% for the Planet.

For my test, I used the Milk scent, and poured about 1 oz. of detergent in the washer for a small load. (Note: There is no cap or cup to measure for this one, so I had to convert ounces to tablespoons and use that to measure it out.) The towel came out clean and smelled absolutely divine. The shirt I washed smelled like I spritzed perfume on it, the scent lasting throughout the day. While this one was a bit less user-friendly for measuring it out, it certainly was my favorite in terms of its fragrance.

The tablets are made without VOCs and chlorine bleach, and they’re Cradle to Cradle Certified, which means they meet five categories of sustainability performance. The B Corp and Certified Climate Neutral company was founded by Sarah Paiji Yoo, who decided to start a company that made cleaning products that didn’t come in plastic packaging after becoming a mom and learning about the microplastics in our water supply.

For my test, I tried out the fragrance-free laundry tablets. I only needed to throw one in the load — incredibly easy and mess-free — and it washed the peanut butter right out, no stains left. It left both the towel and my clothes feeling clean and soft, but overall smelled neutral and fragrance-free, as promised.

Best For | Multi-purpose laundry detergent
Features | Reusable glass bottle option, fragrance-free, plant and mineral-based ingredients, works in all washers (including HE)
Available At | Branchbasics.com
Price | $85 (starter kit, glass bottle)

The laundry detergent from Branch Basics is made from “The Concentrate” — their multi-purpose cleaning solution that can be mixed in various ways to make everything from laundry detergent to carpet cleaner. The plant and mineral-based formula is Made Safe, fragrance-free, biodegradable, and is made with organic chamomile and natural water softeners. Branch Basics was founded by three women who wanted to remove toxic chemicals from the home and go back to the basics.

For my test, I mixed the concentrate with water in the glass laundry bottle, which has lines that help you easily measure out the exact amount. Then, I poured half a capful in the load. It washed the peanut butter stains out, and mostly washed the smell out, though there was a faint peanut butter smell to it fresh out of the washer. After the towel came out of the dryer, though, it smelled fine, feeling and looking clean. My shirt smelled clean and overall neutral, and felt great on my sensitive skin!

6. Rosey by Thrive

B corp

Thrive Market’s home cleaning product brand Rosey has two laundry detergent options — Unscented and Lavender. The biodegradable mineral and plant-based formula is free from optical whiteners, three times concentrated, and free from synthetic fragrances. Rosey uses ingredients that are good for people and the planet — the brand avoids materials with harmful downstream effects and prioritizes ingredient transparency.

For my test, I used the unscented laundry detergent. This would be a great option for someone who is new to nontoxic, natural laundry detergents because the packaging is similar to the big brands — there’s a cap for you to measure and that classic laundry detergent look. It also washed out the peanut butter, and left both the towel and my clothes feeling great and smelling clean.

They partner with over 800 organizations across the U.S., and customers get to choose which cause they’d like to support: Homeless shelters, women’s shelters, animal shelters, disaster relief, or veterans.

Earth Breeze sheets come in two options: Fresh Scent or Fragrance Free. I used the Fresh Scent laundry sheets for my test — I loved how easy they were to throw into the wash and how thin and space-saving the pack was. It washed out all the peanut butter stains and left the towel, and my t-shirt, smelling pleasant and clean.

8. Biokleen

Gluten free
Soy free

Best For | Liquid, sheet, or powder laundry detergent
Features | Concentrated formula, plant-derived cleaning agents, hypoallergenic
Available At | Biokleenhome.com; Target; Walmart; Select grocery stores
Price | $33

Biokleen offers several types of natural, nontoxic laundry detergent — liquid, sheets, powder — and is available at many stores in-person, as well as online. Its convenience is matched by various scent options like Free & Clear, Lavender, and Sport, making it an easy choice for picky families. I tried the Free & Clear formula, which is hypoallergenic, free from artificial fragrances and dyes, and 3 times concentrated to reduce packaging, waste, and energy. The 1.2-gallon bottle gets you 300 HE loads (150 regular loads). Biokleen was founded in the 1980s by Jim Rimer, who was a sales executive at a chemical supply company. He didn’t like the harmful side effects he was seeing, so he set out to create nontoxic alternatives.

For the peanut butter test, I used half a cap of the Free & Clear laundry detergent, as directed. It not only washed out the peanut butter smell and stains, but left the towel (and my clothes) feeling thoroughly washed. My shirt felt soft and comfortable after washing with Biokleen, with a neutral, not noticeable smell.

9. Cleancult

Budget friendly
Cruelty free
Eco friendly packaging
Subscriptions available

Best For | Long lasting, fresh scented laundry detergent
Features | Refill system, hypoallergenic, fights stains, removes odors, softens clothes
Available At | Cleancult.com; Select grocery stores and drugstores
Price | $13

Cleancult is a natural cleaning brand that sells all-purpose cleaners, hand soap, dishwasher tablets, and, of course, laundry detergent. The brand offers refillable glass containers and refills that come in paper-based, 100% recyclable packaging. Cleancult has three options for laundry detergent: Fragrance Free, Juniper Sandalwood, and Wild Lavender. The naturally derived, biodegradable laundry detergents are all dye-free and hypoallergenic. Cleancult is certified Plastic Neutral, which means they fund and support sustainable projects that remove as much plastic waste from the environment as they use in their packaging.

I tested the Juniper Sandalwood laundry detergent. I measured straight from the package, which was admittedly a little messy. Cleancult’s laundry detergent both washed out the peanut butter stains and made the towel and my clothes smell great. The scent was strong, so if you like a laundry detergent that smells throughout the day, this is a perfect choice.

They offer three ultra‑concentrated liquid detergents: Afterglow, with a rich, layered fragrance of bergamot, florals, and grounding base notes; Sunday Reset, a fragrance‑free option that’s gentle on sensitive skin yet still powerful on stains; and the newest fragrance, Boyfriend Material, which has notes of crisp woods. All formulas are non‑toxic, vegan, cruelty‑free, and use advanced enzyme and anti‑odor technology to tackle everyday messes. The detergents come in compact, recyclable aluminum bottles with a pump for easy use, and the brand leans into a colorful, self‑care–meets‑everyday‑ritual vibe that makes laundry feel more joyful than ordinary. It truly is mess-free and so cute on our laundry cart.

The post 10 Best Natural And Organic Body Washes (2026 Review) appeared first on The Good Trade.

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

I spent months testing the best organic, natural, and nontoxic body washes on the market — these are my favorites for clean, nourished body care.

Is there anything more luxurious than a hot shower or a long, leisurely bath? I think not. It’s my preferred way to wind down at the end of the day, and my go-to self-care practice that is sure to soothe my nervous system. I typically opt for a simple, gentle cleanser for all over body care, but occasionally I love to indulge with a natural body wash made with organic ingredients that leaves my skin feeling nourished and healthy without stripping it of its natural oils.

Why choose natural, nontoxic body wash?

Natural and organic body washes typically contain fewer synthetic chemicals, reducing the risk of skin irritation, allergies, and other dermatological issues, making them ideal for sensitive skin or conditions like eczema and psoriasis (both of which I have). By avoiding harmful ingredients like parabens, sulfates, phthalates, and synthetic fragrances, natural body washes can help mitigate health concerns such as hormone disruption and carcinogenic effects. They often include nourishing ingredients such as aloe vera, coconut oil, shea butter, and essential oils, which provide hydration and essential nutrients.

Additionally, natural body washes are generally more environmentally friendly, utilizing biodegradable ingredients and sustainable packaging, therefore reducing pollution and the carbon footprint. Many of these products are also cruelty-free, aligning with ethical and humane treatment of animals.

Made with organic and natural ingredients, our team has done the research for you to find the best body wash formulas that are cruelty-free, vegan, nontoxic, and gentle on sensitive skin.

What should you look for when shopping natural and organic body wash?

When shopping for an organic and natural body wash that prioritizes safety and sustainability it’s important to consider both the ingredients and the third-party certifications the brand has procured. A good rule of thumb to remember is that formulas that contain generally recognizable ingredients is a good sign. At the same time, these formulas are a science, and even necessary, safe additives and preservatives aren’t typically recognizable to the average layperson. Unless you’re a scientist that can distinguish chemical compounds, it can be a challenge to digest an ingredient list. Look for ingredients such as natural oils and butters (e.g. coconut, shea, jojoba), botanical extracts (e.g. chamomile, calendula, aloe vera), and plant based cleansing agents (e.g. coconut oil, sodium olivate, sucrose stearate). Reputable certifications to watch for include USDA certified organic, Ecocert, COSMOS, and NATRUE. Generally avoid formulas that contain sulfates, synthetic fragrances and dyes (labeled “fragrance” or “parfum”), parabens, and phthalates.

Additionally, body washes come in all shapes and sizes, and the most sustainable option is the one you’ll use. It’s important to consider your lifestyle, sensory preferences, budget and bathing frequency when selecting a body wash. For example, if you opt for a concentrate, but know you’re not going to take the time to complete the extra step of diluting the formula, it may be best to select a different option. I’ve included my notes below on which option may be preferable for certain folks.

Our criteria & methodology:

Our team has used, researched, and corresponded with the top clean beauty and skincare brands for years. Together we’ve chosen our favorite natural body washes that are nontoxic, organic, and leave you feeling fresh, and I personally tried and compared each one in my own home, making notes on scent, consistency, sustainability specs, and more based on my own preferences and our readers’ interests.

I personally tested 10 of the best natural and organic body washes on the market.
Read on for my notes on feel, aroma, sustainability standards, and more, for each!

To contextualize my reviews, I’ll share a bit about myself: I live in Southern California with my partner and our two children. I’ve lived with atopic dermatitis all my life, so ingredient transparency is extremely important not only for the sake of our skin (no surprises, please!) but also for the sake of those in the ingredient supply chain and the planet. Due to my sensitive skin and our dry climate, I reach for products that keep our skin calm and moisturized. I also love products that can multitask, keep our lives simple, budget-friendly, and our countertops clearer. I also have a sweet spot for a little luxury, too. 😉

We regularly update this guide with emerging favorites that meet the following criteria.

 • NATURAL INGREDIENTS | All of the brands on this list use sustainable and natural ingredients that are healthy, smell great, and offer functional benefits.
 • NONTOXIC/CHEMICAL-FREE | We’ve chosen options that are certified nontoxic so no harsh chemicals make their way into your cleansing routine.
 • CLEANSING | These are all effective and lovely to use. You’ll want to keep them as part of your daily routine for years to come.
 • HYDRATING | Because of their natural and nontoxic ingredients, these body washes replenish you rather than stripping your skin of the moisture it needs. Say hello to dewy, plump skin.

Made with Undaria seaweed which is rich in antioxidants and minerals alongside a nourishing blend of jojoba, coconut, and avocado oil, OSEA’s knocked it out of the park with a body wash that feels like a cleansing and skincare treatment all in one. Kate’s Review | “Osea’s body wash is my top pick for its nourishing formula, luxurious feel, and price point per fluid oz. Not only does it uplevel my bathtime, it feels gentle, nourishing and is the satisfying first step to a full-body skincare routine. The bottle’s modest size lasts longer than I expected. Best For | Daily washes
Natural Ingredients | Aloe, patchouli, tea tree, eucalyptus
Price | $26

No sulfates and all the lather: Meet Ursa Major’s Hoppin’ Fresh Body Wash. If you’re a fan of suds and a deep clean, you’ll love this natural formula bringing together peppermint, eucalyptus, citrus and more. With a bright minty scent, you’ll be left with a zing and zest to take you through the day. Invigorating and with a generous foam, we felt squeaky clean and energized post-shower. (And if it turns out it’s not for you, Ursa Major offers a 30-day guarantee for exchanges or returns.)

Kate’s Review | “Lather lovers unite! If you’re one to prioritize a thick, foamy consistency, this is the pick for you. Though the aroma is gender neutral, Ursa Major’s formula makes me think of my husband – someone who relies on his AM shower to wake him up in the morning, who loves a fresh scent, and who will only choose a cleanser that has ample suds.”

3. Nécessaire

B corp

Vegan

Best For | Spa-like experience
Natural Ingredients | Niacinamide, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, omega-6, omega-9
Price Range | $28–$42

Nécessaire’s vitamin-rich body wash offers the perfect combo of cleansing and skin-preserving benefits. Available in both fragrance-free and scented versions — we are big fans of the Eucalyptus — this body wash has the texture of a classic liquid body wash, but with the benefits of nourishing ingredients like niacinamide, vitamin A, C, E, and omega 6 and 9. It also easily washes away dirt, odor, and debris from your skin, even without a loofah (though if you’re looking for a rich lather, you should definitely use one!). If you’re not a fan of strong scents, the scented varieties of this body wash are light, leaving you with softly scented just-came-from-the-spa skin, without feeling overpowering.

Kate’s Review | “Necessaire’s product line always feels high-end, and their body wash is no different. The scent is present yet subtle, and is available in an unscented option as well (something I personally think all brands should provide). The price point is higher than I would personally spend on a wash, but a small amount lathers well and feels luxurious. Whether you’re looking to treat yourself to an elevated experience or give the gift of self-care, you can’t go wrong with Necessaire.”

cocokind’s new Milky-Soft Face & Body Cleanser is a creamy, ultra-gentle wash designed to simplify your routine without compromising on skin health. Formulated with soothing aloe vera, calming oat extract, and nourishing rice protein, this pH-balanced cleanser supports the skin barrier while effectively removing dirt and buildup from both face and body. The milky texture feels soft and hydrating rather than foamy or stripping, making it especially lovely for dry, reactive, or eczema-prone skin. True to cocokind’s ethos, the formula is vegan, cruelty-free, fragrance-free, and dermatologist-tested — a thoughtful option for the whole family.

Kate’s Review | “I can confirm cocokind’s face and body cleanser is as soft as it sounds and is suitable for even the most sensitive among us. Bonus? This formula is skincare-grade and can serve as both your face and body wash for a streamlined shower routine. I am, in a word, obsessed with this wash, and emerge feeling like a silky goddess.”

5. Bathing Culture

Biodegradable
Cruelty free

Vegan

Best For | Low-waste options
Natural Ingredients | Organic coconut, olive, and sunflower oils, natural plant glycerin (soybean), aloe vera, shea butter & essential oils
Price | $36

Bathing Culture launched in 2015 after its founders, two cyclists, joked they’d never be able to get clean. Sick of soaps that were either too watery or stripped their skin of moisture, the company’s Mind and Body Wash is made with certified organic ingredients like aloe vera, shea butter, and coconut, olive, and sunflower oils. Best described by our partners as a “grown-up body wash that doesn’t feel like a 10-in-1”, this organic formula smells like the redwoods of Northern California with an energizing kick of black pepper. As a gender-neutral scent, it’s perfect to use across the whole family — and the gorgeous, reusable packaging serves as a statement piece that adds a nice touch to the household bathroom, too.

Kate’s Review | “Bathing Culture’s formula is concentrated without feeling harsh, and the sustainable packaging is also a vibe. One bottle is enough for 80 showers, which means a little goes a very long way. If you love this wash as much as I do, I highly recommend investing in the one-gallon refillable bottle if it’s feasible to save on long-term cost, packaging waste, and carbon waste from shipping.”

Best For | Normal to sensitive skin
Natural Ingredients | Organic aloe leaf juice, organic camellia, sunflower, and rice bran seed oils
Price Range | $12–$285

Plaine Products’ Body Wash is made for low-waste lifestyles! This refillable and reusable product is made with aluminum and can be purchased with or without a BPA-free plastic pump. (You can also send it back to recycle when you’re done using it!) The formula itself will leave you with soft skin thanks to organic and natural ingredients like pineapple and papaya pulp extracts, bamboo silk, and aloe leaf juice. Minty and sweet all at once, the Rosemary Mint Vanilla is like bathing inside a candy cane tub (but in the best way!). It feels clarifying, cooling, and calming all at once. Plus, thanks to the aloe juice, we enjoy how it has more viscosity than water-based formulas and lends itself to a more robust lather. Best of all, the packaging came with clear steps on how to recycle and refill when needed.

Kate’s Review | “Plaine Products’ body wash formula is no nonsense. Low waste, reasonable cost, clear refill instructions and a lather suited for any skin type. The rosemary mint vanilla scent is sweet yet earthy, and I appreciate any brand that offers an unscented version for those of us (me!) who are sensitive to additional fragrant ingredients or who are simply trying to cut fragrance out entirely.”

7. 100% PURE

American made
Cruelty free
Gluten free
Vegetarian

Best For | Combo skin
Natural Ingredients | Lavender essential oil, honey, red algae, green tea, rose hydrosol
Price Range | $20–$25

Indulge in a luxurious bath with 100% PURE. Its Vanilla Bean Shower Gel is nontoxic, 100 percent natural, and made with organic aloe, vanilla absolute, lavender honey, and Japanese honeysuckle for a sweet, aromatic scent. Instead of artificial vanilla scents you’ll find elsewhere (whether in food or fragrance), 100% Pure’s Vanilla Bean Shower Gel smells just like the real thing. It’s true vanilla bean through and through, supplemented by mineral-rich red algae and green tea for an impressive lather. Heavenly and hydrating. No matter your skin type, you’ll feel refreshed and soothed with this body gel.

Kate’s Review | “100% pure’s body wash is reminiscent of Bath & Body Works — the scent and aesthetic is nostalgic, but the ingredients are a serious upgrade. Safe, soothing, and budget-friendly. If you’re looking to feel like a teenage dream without the toxic burden, 100% pure is 100% perfection.”

Kate’s Review | Puracy’s body wash is simple and effective at an accessible price point. Plus, they boast a tear-free formula fit for small children and pets, which is comforting to me as a mother of two. A little goes a long way, which means the bottle lasts, re-purchasing is less frequent, and shipping emissions are lower. A wonderful option all around.”

9. Alaffia

Best For | Dry skin
Natural Ingredients | Neem extract, shea butter, coconut oil, lavender oil
Price Range | $11–$18

Calm your mind — and your skin — with Alaffia’s Shea Body Wash. Ethically made via West African women’s co-ops, this body wash blends unrefined shea butter, virgin coconut oil, neem extract, and lavender to heal and nourish your skin, no matter how dry it is. It packed an aromatic punch when we used it, and was equal parts smooth and silky, which also provided much-needed hydration to our dry skin in a desert climate. Know that your dollars will support women, Fair Trade practices, and eco-friendly packaging, and you’ll get a long-lasting and effective body wash!

Kate’s Review | “I love this wash for my kids in particular — I’m not nervous if the bottle falls in the bath or if they decide to pour a little too much in the tub. The value is fantastic, and the gentle formula is easy on even my two-year-old’s delicate, eczema-prone skin. The cherry on top is being able to purchase it at our local grocery store, making the company’s accessibility just as wonderful as their impact.”

10. Dr. Bronner’s

Budget friendly
Cruelty free
Fair trade

USDA organic
Vegan

Best For | Multi-purpose use
Natural Ingredients | Organic coconut oil, organic olive oil, organic fair deal hemp oil, organic jojoba oil
Price Range | $4–$65

Looking for something versatile? What about an 18-in-1 Pure-Castile soap from Dr. Bronner’s? Made with organic ingredients like hemp seed oil, coconut oil, and jojoba oils, your skin will soak in the highest quality ingredients around. It’s safe to use even on sensitive skin, provided one follows the ratio requirements. Plus, this organic and certified Fair Trade soap can be used on your hands, face, body, and even around your home. Talk about multitasking. Best of all, we were surprised by the bottle’s size (a whopping 32 oz. bottle for $17) so you truly get your bang for your buck. And a little goes a long way. If you prefer body washes that are subtly scented and easy to glide on, this one may be a winner.

Kate’s Review | “Our family used to use Dr. Bronner’s Baby Unscented 18-in-1 as our daily cleanser. I couldn’t quite figure out the ratio to use it as a body wash without it irritating my sensitive skin, and eventually when kids came along, I couldn’t trust myself to complete the extra step to dilute the solution. However, it is a fantastic staple item to keep in the house, and we still use it regularly for many other purposes! If you’re someone who appreciates its versatility and the simplicity that it provides, and has the wherewithal to follow instructions, I highly recommend it.

The post I Tested The 12 Best Nontoxic Shampoos And Conditioners appeared first on The Good Trade.

]]>
The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

I’ve personally tested the best natural and organic shampoos and conditioners on the market — these are my top 12 picks with clean, organic ingredients.

One of my best friends in middle school had gorgeous, straight, shiny hair. I remember envying her. Mine was textured, wavy, voluminous, and reacted to every bit of humidity. All things I’ve learned to love now, but when I was 12, I thought I had a shampoo problem. I insisted on switching to the $3 Suave shampoo my friend used, thinking that would change my texture.

Much to my chagrin, my hair didn’t get any straighter. And when I insisted my babysitter straighten my hair with a clothing iron, my mom was seriously unhappy. I had to learn to accept the texture and shape of my own hair.

“These days, I’m not straightening or scrunching my hair anymore; I am embracing my natural texture.”

In high school, I found a new hair idol — a girl with waves who religiously “scrunched” her hair. I followed her lead: Sleep with my hair in a messy bun, take it out in the morning, flip my head over, and spray loads of Aussie Sprunch Spray in my hair while crunching it with my hands to create gelled waves for school. A style that actually worked with my natural texture. And I remember people started giving me compliments. They liked my natural waves — and over time, I did too.

These days, I’m not straightening or scrunching my hair anymore; I am embracing my natural texture. I like to wear my hair product-free, so what I’m really focused on is shampoo and conditioner that don’t weigh my hair down and actually hydrate my waves.

“I like to wear my hair product-free, so what I’m really focused on is shampoo and conditioner that don’t weigh my hair down and actually hydrate my waves.”

I live in a dry climate now, so my hair doesn’t get as frizzy as it did growing up on the East Coast. But I’m still thinking about protecting it with nourishing ingredients — not stripping or drying it with harsh chemicals. Before this guide, I’d been religiously using Nécessaire’s shampoo, which I’ve ranked in the guide below (and still love). But I hadn’t expanded my shampoo horizons in a while, so when it came time to test these brands, I was excited to see what else was out there.

Our criteria and methodology:

Over the last month, I’ve tested 11 shampoo brands — and called in a guest tester from our team, Silsila, to review one of the brands designed for hair that’s more textured than mine, so you could get the best firsthand perspective.

My process was simple: Wash my hair, let it air dry, document how it affected my texture and waves, and then live with it for a few days. I also paid special attention to scent — I’ve grown to prefer unscented products over strong perfumes and synthetic fragrances, so I’ve noted the intensity of scent and whether it lingered in the guide below.

And I considered how the products foam. Most shampoos and soaps foam because of SLS — a harsh chemical foaming agent. We associate foam with efficacy, but it really doesn’t have much to do with how clean our hair gets. We’ve made sure all the products in this guide are SLS-free — but clean products have come so far. I was surprised that a lot of these lathered beautifully, giving that satisfying wash feel!

Beyond clean ingredients, I’m looking for hydration, bounce, shine, and minimal frizz. So here’s how these 12 brands stacked up.

The criteria for our selections fall into the below categories, and we regularly update this list with emerging favorites.

My team and I tested 12 nontoxic shampoo brands, noting our firsthand experience, scent, and efficacy of each.
 • NATURAL/ORGANIC | Each shampoo is free of sodium lauryl sulfate and other harsh ingredients, many with certifications to back them up like B-Corp or EWG verified.
 • EFFICACY | I personally tested each product for efficacy, and you’ll find more details about exactly how each one left my hair feeling.
 • AFFORDABLE | Cost is a number-one factor for a lot of folks, so we’ve included a range of price points here. They go for over $4 per ounce at the high end to a little over $1 per ounce at the low end.
 • SCENT | I’m a sucker for a good scent! I’ve described the scent of each shampoo below, and noted which ones might be a bit too strong for folks who are sensitive to smell. We’ve only chosen brands that can ensure their fragrance compositions are also nontoxic.

To learn more about natural, clean beauty, check out our lists of natural skincare, aluminum-free natural deodorants, and plastic-free shampoo bars. Be sure to also check out our comprehensive guide on the best nontoxic curly hair brands for all curl types.

A Good Trade fave, Ursa Major is a B-Corp based in Vermont that specializes in no-frills skincare. They have a tight lineup of bodycare products, too, including deodorant, soap, shampoo, and conditioner. The brand calls its products, infused with natural ingredients, “super refreshing,” and “wildly effective.” They’re super transparent about sustainability, too — they’re certified plastic negative, they use FSC-certified paper for most of their secondary packaging, and they produce 90% of their cartons at a carbon neutral facility.

Grace’s Review | True to its name, this shampoo and conditioner duo is perfect if you’re someone who washes your hair daily – I do, especially when I’m working out a lot. The products have a bright, woodsy scent that smells fresh in the shower but doesn’t linger like a heavy perfume. The shampoo washes without stripping or dehydrating your hair, and the conditioner provides just the right amount of light moisture. My hair air-dried quickly and didn’t feel weighed down. I’ve found myself reaching for this product the most – it’s truly such an easy option!

2. Nécessaire

Nécessaire is known for their simple, effective formulations focusing on body care, their commitment to sustainability (they’re a B Corp), and their utterly chic branding. They rose to prominence with products like fragrance-free body lotion and body wash, and can now be found in Sephoras nationwide. But when they do fragrance, it’s elevated, spa-like, and plant-derived. Their flagship shampoo is unscented and has the National Eczema Association seal of approval. Nécessaire is even certified Climate Neutral, and they’re a member of 1% for the Planet.

Grace’s Review | Even before this review, I’d repurchased Nécessaire’s Scalp Duo 10 times. This light, hydrating, everyday shampoo and conditioner is powered by hyaluronic acid to moisturize your hair and soothe a dry, sensitive scalp. Their ApiScalp™ technology also calms itchiness and irritation. I’m not even someone who considers myself a dry scalp person — but with this shampoo, I’ve never had to deal with it, even living in a dry climate. It’s also fragrance-free, dermatologist-tested, hypoallergenic, and non-comedogenic — truly the gentlest everyday product. After an air dry, my hair always feels clean, smooth and weightless. Only after looking at all my air dry photos side by side, did I notice that the Nécessaire Duo left my hair a little more frizzy than some of the other brands… noted!

3. Sienna Naturals

Best For | Textured hair
Natural & Organic Ingredients | Aloe leaf juice, coconut oil, baobab oil; phenoxyethanol-free, sulfate-free, silicone-free, paraben-free
EWG Rating | 2
Fragrance Free Options | No; fragrance from natural essential oils
Organic Certification | No
Product Range | H.A.P.I Shampoo & H.A.P.I. Conditioner
Price Range* | $28 for shampoo, $32 for conditioner (discounted subscriptions available); $2.80–$3.20/ounce

Plant-based and dermatologist-approved hair care brand Sienna Naturals addresses growing concerns about harsh chemicals in many textured haircare lines. Founders Hanna Diop and Issa Rae created the collection with scalp health at the forefront, formulating products that are pH-balanced, non-irritating, and non-sensitizing. The Moisture-Rich Cleansing shampoo wins award after award, including a Byrdie 2022 Eco Award and a Cosmopolitan 2023 Holy Grail Beauty Award. The brand’s matching Untangled Conditioner helps with hydration and easy detangling.

Silsila’s Review | Both the Sienna Naturals H.A.P.I. Shampoo and H.A.P.I. Untangled Conditioner have won multiple awards, and for good reason. The shampoo is designed to deeply cleanse the hair and scalp, removing product buildup without stripping away moisture, while the conditioner detangles, strengthens, and supports healthy hair growth — basically, everything that textured hair needs. Naturally, I was excited to test them on my dry scalp and curly, tangle-prone hair.

After two washes, both products truly lived up to the hype. The shampoo has a creamy texture and creates a silky, gentle lather, with an earthy lavender scent that feels both comforting and refreshing. I was genuinely surprised by how soft and moisturized my hair felt after rinsing — most deep-cleansing shampoos leave my strands dry, but this one didn’t. The conditioner features an earthy floral scent, subtly reminiscent of honey, and a medium-thick texture. A little went a long way, providing just the right amount of slip to detangle with either my fingers or a brush. Once air-dried, my scalp felt calm and flake-free, and my curls looked shiny, soft, and refreshed. I even received compliments on how defined and voluminous my hair looked! While on the pricier side, for how little you need for the product’s effectiveness, this duo is well worth it.

4. Roz

Best For | Salon quality
Natural & Organic Ingredients | Coconut-based surfactants, ceramides, transparent fragrance formulation; silicone-free, SLS-free, paraben-free
EWG Rating | 2-5 (Roz products range – but Shampoo & Conditioner Duo not listed)
Fragrance Free Options | No
Organic Certification | No
Product Range | The Foundation Shampoo & Conditioner Duo
Price Range* | $81 for bundle; $4/ounce

Founded by celebrity hair stylist Mara Roszak, Roz delivers high-end, salon-grade formulations made simple. They create basic, clean formulations all about performing at a professional level while reducing impact on the environment, and use sustainable packaging made of glass or aluminum. Each product is vegan and cruelty free. And while fragrance is notoriously one of the ingredients you should avoid when product shopping, since brands are allowed to protect their formulas and not disclose fragrance ingredients, Roz believes in radical fragrance transparency. Their signature shampoo scent, a blend of bergamot, fig, vetiver, and neroli, is free of PEGs, nitromusks, and phthalates, and is fully International Fragrance Association-compliant. Their hydrating, salon-grade shampoo is also formulated with their BotaniComplex along with coconut-based surfactants and ceramides.

Grace’s Review | It seems like all of a sudden, all the coolest girls I know have Roz in their shower. Developed by a celebrity hairdresser with over 20 years in the industry, The Foundation Duo feels and smells truly luxurious — with a strong, salon-style lather without SLS. The shampoo is designed to hydrate and remove buildup to create the perfect base for styling. It’s also packed with ceramides and pea peptides to strengthen your hair and protect it from damage. After washing with it, my brush glides through completely tangle-free.

My one complaint: The scent is quite strong and perfumed, and it lingers. It actually smells like you put on perfume for the rest of the day after washing your hair. Some people love this — and the scent is beautiful — but strong scents just aren’t for me.

Grace’s Review | Prose knows that no one’s hair needs are the same, so they offer personalized, science-backed formulations and freshly bottle their products to create custom solutions designed to meet your unique needs. They let you pick whatever scent you want — or opt for unscented, which is my preference. I chose a formulation that would support my natural wave, and it really does! My hair dried frizz-free, and my waves felt voluminous and pronounced. I also focused on hydration and shine — and Prose delivered!

Since everyone’s formulation will be different, I highly encourage you to take the quiz. These products turned out great and my hair responded well.

“Growing up as a Latin American immigrant in a homogenous country like Sweden, I never found myself represented in mainstream media and the products I consumed,” says Ceremonia founder Babba Riviera, so she set out to make a hair care brand that focuses on Latinx heritage. They source ingredients from Central and South America, and the brand offers three different shampoo/conditioner sets for different hair types — one for thick and dry hair, one for fine and thin hair, and one for damage repair and color protection. All products come in beautifully chic packaging with pumps.

Grace’s Review | Ceremonia’s Guava Shampoo smelled fresh, fruity, and nostalgic — the scent wasn’t overpowering, and reminded me of a childhood shampoo in the best way. It left my hair smooth, hydrated, healthy, and bouncy. This reparative shampoo and conditioner is specifically developed for damaged hair, and while you’d need to test it over time to see long-term results, I love that it’s designed to repair and protect from damage and color fade. I don’t dye my hair, but if you do, this duo is designed to revitalize your locks after color treatment. It’s also a great option for summer — protecting your hair from chlorine, salt water, and UV exposure.

The company is Green Business Certified and offers skincare, body care, and makeup products, too.

Grace’s Review | 100% Pure gave me one of my best air-dries — the right amount of weight and bounce to leave my hair textured and wavy, but not too big or voluminous. I didn’t feel like I needed to do any additional styling. It has a light cherry scent that smells a tiny bit artificial, but doesn’t linger long.

The conditioner is deeply moisturizing and made with aloe vera, rose hydrosol, cucumber, argan oil, and seaweed collagen to lock in moisture and restore bounce and shine. This sulfate-free shampoo is also safe for color-treated hair – so it’s a great option if you frequently dye it.

Price Range* | $82 for bundle (discounted subscriptions available); $4.77/ounce

Created by a dermatologist, SEEN targets their products to folks with sensitive or acne-prone skin, treating hair care like part of your skincare. They carry two shampoos — one with scent and one without (the latter being backed by the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance) — both of which were clinically proven to be non-comedogenic. In a study, 70% of participants with acne saw an improvement in body acne and 52% saw a reduction of face acne, while 93% of participants with flaky scalps saw improvement. Combine those stats with a formulation that’s designed to reduce frizz and deeply clean without stripping, and you’re left with both healthier hair and skin.

Grace’s Review | Seen makes a dermatologist-designed, fragrance-free shampoo and conditioner for sensitive skin. A little product goes a long way for a strong lather and clean hair. This gentle, sulfate-free shampoo rinses easily without leaving my hair or scalp feeling stripped. The lightweight conditioner helped detangle and soften my hair while reducing frizz and breakage.

I have normal hair, so this worked perfectly for me — but if you have dry or damaged hair, you might want to try their Deeper Conditioner instead. It’s also safe for sensitive, acne-prone, eczema-prone, and psoriasis-prone skin.

New Zealand-based B-Corp Ethique is revolutionizing the haircare space with a full lineup of plastic-free bar shampoos and conditioners, and their sustainability initiatives don’t stop there — they plant a tree for every online order, and they donate 2% of their sales to charity. They offer shampoo bars for all sorts of concerns, from frizz to oil to curls, and they carry some face and body products, too, like deodorant, body wash, moisturizers, and lip balm.

Grace’s Review | I didn’t know what to expect from these fun blue shampoo bars, but I was pleasantly surprised. Ethique’s Hydration Bars are described as “eight glasses of water for your hair” — and they really delivered. Each one of my curls felt individually moisturized and defined. These bars lathered the least compared to the other products, but still left my hair evenly waved with a nice beachy texture. They come in completely recyclable, plastic-free packaging — and I love that they have mini options for travel. Definitely the most sustainable option overall.

Fun fact from their website: One bar lasts as long as three bottles of liquid shampoo.

What are the benefits of nontoxic shampoos and conditioners?

Nontoxic shampoos and conditioners are great because they leave out harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens, and synthetic fragrances, making them gentle on your scalp and hair (while reducing the risk of irritation or allergic reactions). They’re often packed with natural, nourishing ingredients like plant-based oils, botanical extracts, and vitamins that help strengthen and hydrate your hair, leaving it softer, shinier, and healthier over time. Plus, they’re eco-friendly, often coming in biodegradable packaging and made without harmful toxins that can negatively impact the environment. Many nontoxic formulas are also cruelty-free, so you can feel good knowing your hair care routine aligns with ethical and sustainable values.

What ingredients should you avoid in your haircare?

Our editors are big fans of shampoos that are free of harmful sulfates — sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES), to be precise. These harsh surfactants can strip color from color-treated hair, along with your hair’s natural moisture, leaving it drier and more prone to breakage. Sulfates also have the potential to disrupt our hormones, too. We also like to avoid parabens and endocrine-disrupting phthalates, which none of the products on this list have.

It can tough to decipher which ingredients in our haircare brands we should avoid, especially when their are so many options to choose from. Lindsay Dahl, an environmental health advocate, policy leader, and author of Cleaning House alerts us that we need to all put in effort to to shop safely. “Brands should be actively testing their own products for relevant chemicals and contaminants, which is not happening enough…Certain PFAS, heavy metals, pesticides, phhthalaes, formaldehyde and parabens can easily show up at contaminant levels in, yes, even clean products.” While certifications are imperfect for independent ingredient checking, Lindsay states, “Clearya and EWG Skin Deep are two strongest, science-based apps that assess product and chemical safety.”

“Brands should be actively testing their own products for relevant chemicals and contaminants, which is not happening enough…Certain PFAS, heavy metals, pesticides, phhthalaes, formaldehyde and parabens can easily show up at contaminant levels in, yes, even clean products.”

-Lindsay Dahl

These ingredient testing sites and apps help us understand which shampoos and conditioners are nontoxic and safe for our skin and hair. EWG-verified’s list of hair care products is a great place to learn which brands meet EWG’s gold standard of transparent, tested, and safe ingredients and the Clearya app and browser extension will notify you of toxic ingredients as you shop.

ecogolik‘s ingredient’s checker is also a great resource to reveal if your haircare product is free from parabens, sulfates, alcohol, silicones, allergens, and more.

In general, we like to look for formulations with simple, natural ingredients and no synthetic fragrances. A brand’s ethos and sustainability practices are incredibly important to us, too, which is why you’ll find B-Corps throughout this list, along with brands that are plastic-free or even certified climate-neutral.

How to choose the right shampoo and conditioner for your hair:

Choosing the right shampoo and conditioner comes down to understanding your hair type and its specific needs. If you have dry or damaged hair, look for hydrating formulas with ingredients like argan oil or shea butter to restore moisture and strengthen strands. For oily hair, a lightweight, clarifying shampoo with tea tree oil or charcoal can help balance excess oil without stripping your scalp. Curly, textured, or dyed hair thrives with sulfate-free, deeply nourishing formulas that enhance definition, fight frizz, and keep your locks vibrant. And if you have a sensitive scalp, a gentle, fragrance-free option with soothing ingredients like aloe vera or chamomile is a great choice. Ultimately, picking the right shampoo and conditioner is all about listening to your hair and giving it the care it needs!

Are organic haircare products worth the price?

Organic haircare products can be worth the price — especially if you’re someone who values ingredient transparency and scalp health. While they might cost a bit more upfront, organic shampoos, conditioners, and treatments often skip the harsh chemicals like sulfates, parabens, and synthetic fragrances that can dry out your hair or irritate sensitive skin. Instead, they’re packed with nourishing plant-based oils, extracts, and gentle cleansers that work with your hair’s natural biology. Many people find that over time, their hair becomes more balanced, shiny, and easier to manage. So if you’re looking to simplify your routine and minimize exposure to questionable ingredients, investing in organic haircare can definitely be worth it.

In addition to the long-term benefits for your hair and scalp, there’s also a “less is more” mindset with many organic formulations. Because the ingredients tend to be concentrated and free from unnecessary fillers, you might find that you need less product per use — which means it can last longer than conventional options. (Shampoo bars are a great example of this!) And if you’ve struggled with scalp sensitivity, flaking, or buildup from synthetic ingredients, switching to organic might be a game changer. There’s peace of mind in knowing what’s going onto your body is as safe and nourishing as possible.

Is organic haircare better for the environment?

Organic haircare is generally better for the environment. These products are often made with sustainably sourced ingredients, biodegradable formulas, and eco-conscious packaging, which means less pollution and waste throughout the product’s life cycle. What sets organic brands apart is their commitment to sustainability throughout the supply chain. From farming without synthetic pesticides to using recyclable or refillable packaging, many of the companies producing organic haircare are mindful of their environmental impact. Some even partner with carbon offset programs or regenerative farming initiatives that help rebuild healthy soil and capture atmospheric carbon.

Plus, avoiding synthetic chemicals reduces the risk of toxic runoff entering waterways during rinsing, which helps protect aquatic ecosystems. Many organic brands also prioritize cruelty-free practices and work with ethical farms or cooperatives to support a more regenerative approach to agriculture. While not all organic brands are created equal, supporting those that are truly invested in sustainability can amplify the positive effects of your purchase far beyond your bathroom shelf!

The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

Our editors have personally tried the top organic, natural, and nontoxic bath salts and soaks — these are our favorites for ultimate relaxation.

After a long day, a warm bath filled with bubbles, aromatic scents, and fizzing salts can help relieve sore, aching bodies and quiet tired minds. It’s one of the most grounding rituals you can give yourself — the warmth, minerals, and calming aromas help your body unwind, slow your breathing, and prepare you for deeper, more restful sleep. In many ways, it’s the simplest way to turn your own tub into a cozy at-home spa, no appointment required.

For your next self-care spa day, enjoy these bath soaks and salts, often made in small batches with natural, sustainable, and organic ingredients. A good soak isn’t just relaxing; it can support muscle recovery, soothe the skin, and create a moment of calm in a busy day. Even better, many of these blends come in eco-friendly packaging, use locally sourced ingredients, and support small makers. A good soak never felt so good. 🫧

What are bath soaks made from?

Nontoxic bath soaks are typically made from simple, skin-loving ingredients you might already recognize from nature. The base is often mineral-rich salts like Epsom salt or sea salt, which help relax tired muscles thanks to the natural occurring magnesium, and soften the skin while you soak. Many blends also include nourishing extras like baking soda to gently calm skin irritation, or creamy plant-based powders such as coconut milk or finely ground oatmeal that leave your bathwater feeling silky and nourishing.

To make the experience even more blissful, nontoxic bath soaks are usually infused with dried botanicals and pure essential oils. Think calming lavender buds, delicate rose petals, chamomile flowers, or refreshing eucalyptus swirling around your tub like a mini garden spa. Instead of synthetic fragrances, artificial dyes, or mystery additives, these blends keep things beautifully simple — transforming an ordinary bath into a cozy, relaxing ritual your body (and senses) will happily sink into. 🛁

Our criteria:

Our team has used, researched, and corresponded with the top clean beauty and skincare brands for years. Together we’ve chosen our favorite natural bath soaks and salts that are nontoxic, made with organic ingredients, and leave you feeling oh-so-relaxed. 9 Sustainable Gloves For Winter (2026) https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/winter-gloves/ https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/winter-gloves/#respond Thu, 05 Mar 2026 15:15:01 +0000 This winter, stay toasty with these sustainable winter gloves made from repurposed fabrics and responsibly sourced materials like wool and cashmere.

The post 9 Sustainable Gloves For Winter (2026) appeared first on The Good Trade.

]]>
The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.

We’ve lived in and written about sustainable clothing for the past decade — these are our favorite sustainable glove brands for cold weather and winter seasons.

When the days get shorter and cooler, we’ll often layer on a coat or hat, but we shouldn’t forget a good pair of gloves, either! 🧤They provide warmth and protection against extreme climates — and they’re downright cozy. Choosing the perfect winter glove isn’t an easy feat either. There’s the classic glove for everyday cold weather protection, but sometimes mittens might be a better, cozier choice. Depending on the material you prefer, whether that’s sustainably sourced wool, cashmere, leather or recycled poly, each carries different levels of warmth and functionality for your day to day activities. Oh, and don’t forget having handy touchscreen tech or removable fingertips for phone use!

Thankfully, we’ve done the hard work and searched high and low for the toastiest sustainable winter gloves for this winter. These brands use upcycled fabrics (like leftover wool sweaters and landfill-bound polyester) and responsibly sourced wool and cashmere for the protection we need, all season long.

What fabrics should I look for when buying sustainable gloves?

When shopping for sustainable gloves, look for eco-friendly fabrics that are durable, biodegradable, and made with minimal environmental impact. Wool — especially responsibly sourced or recycled wool — is a solid option since it’s natural, biodegradable, and great at regulating temperature. Merino wool is particularly popular because it’s incredibly soft, moisture-wicking, and naturally odor-resistant, making it ideal for both casual and performance gloves. For a more luxurious feel, cashmere is another sustainable choice when sourced responsibly. It’s lightweight yet incredibly warm, but since cashmere production can be resource-intensive, it’s best to look for brands that use recycled or ethically sourced cashmere. Recycled materials like recycled polyester or upcycled fabrics are also worth considering, as they help reduce waste by repurposing old textiles and plastic bottles into durable gloves. For waterproof gloves, look for eco-friendly treatments like PFC-free water repellents rather than traditional coatings that can harm the environment.

No matter what material you go for, consider brands that focus on fair trade and ethical labor practices to make sure your purchase supports workers as well as the planet. With so many great sustainable materials available, it’s totally possible to find gloves that are warm, stylish, and good for the environment!

Our Criteria:

We’ve lived in sustainable outerwear year after year. Below, we’ve compiled our favorite winter glove brands that use ethical and sustainable practices, are eco-friendly and responsibly sourced, and give back to their communities. We regularly add emerging favorites that meet our criteria.

 • SUSTAINABLE & ETHICAL | We’ve prioritized gloves and mittens that use thoughtful, ethical production and labor practices to protect you and the workers. These glove brands also use sustainable sourcing and recycled materials.
 • WARMTH | We’ve chosen gloves that are reviewed and loved for their warmth and durability, even in the coldest climates.
 • AFFORDABLE | We’ve selected gloves at a variety of price points so that there is something for everyone on the list.
