Ruggable are responsible for a lot of microplastic! They did have a big success, because yes the rug are washable and it is nice, but I am so angry with the pilling of the pad! It will happen again and again and all these washable rugs will end up at the dump. Bad choices = bad company.

I’m wondering if the fibers shed into the water? Synthetics are clogging our water, our ocean floors. Is this something that would happen with this material?

Hi J! Thank you for your feedback. We note that the sustainability isn’t up to our top standards, but we do like that these rugs can be washed and kept for many years. For folks with pets and kids especially, a washable option is great to keep rugs out of landfills (and better than “fast” rugs from cheap online stores——or Amazon!) – Emily

Disappointing review…what exactly make these rugs sustainable if they are not made with sustainable materials? Makes me question the Good Trade’s standards all together.

I'm not gonna lie, I'm a little disappointed with this review. There are a few important things that you didn't bring up in regards to sustainability. 1. While the rug pads contain recycled materials, the actual rugs don't. A majority are made from polyester (and not even recycled polyester). 2. Instead of chemically treating their rugs, they coat them with polyurethane, aka more plastic. 3. Synthetic fibers shed when you wash them. These rugs are going to shed a bunch of microplastics every time you wash them because they are made of and coated in plastic. Sure a majority of traditional rugs also have all of these features, so they might be slightly better. But there's no way you should be calling these rugs sustainable.

Thanks for this post! I’ve been debating Ruggable for a while, but wasn’t confident on their sustainability efforts. This helps. I just learned of a competitor the other day – Tumble Rugs – curious what you know of them!
