Comments on: Instead Of A “Sunday Reset,” I’m Embracing Rest https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/sunday-reset/ Tue, 03 Mar 2026 19:40:05 +0000 hourly 1 https://wordpress.org/?v=6.9.4 By: Sheri https://www.thegoodtrade.com/features/sunday-reset/#comment-13408 Tue, 03 Mar 2026 19:40:05 +0000 https://www.thegoodtrade.com/?p=46436#comment-13408 I almost died last fall…sepsis, pneumonia, cancer infections, and a gangrenous gallbladder, all at the same time…ambulances to the hospital and stayed for weeks…how could my body not have notified me of any or all of these terrible things? Or was my life so overwhelmingly busy and unmonitored and out of control that it tried and tried ….but I failed it in the end…now that I have a second chance at life ( albeit in a VERY slow journey back to true health) your words and suggestions hit home. Whereas I actually had several forced months, initially, of rest and extreme care, having an opportunity now to CHOOSE this rest amidst the active healing of my body has become a priority- with life changing implications. I share this so that others may take pause and truly decide what path they want in life…the “glory” of being the one always busy and in demand, or being the one who survives, feels daily gratitude, and embraces all that she missed before…I encourage you to choose the latter…

I’m a PhD student with probably enough work to fill 70 hours each week. Pretty much everyone in my program works 8-10 hour days 6-7 days/week. I feel like I’ve been running on empty for so long. I feel like there must be a gentler way forward where maybe I’m not the top of my class, but I’m still able to get done what I need to without feeling like a shell of myself.

I’ve felt frustrated by the American hustle culture for a while. Sundays are rest days for us too. During the week, I’ve made it a point to go to bed earlier and wake up 3 hours before work for journaling, yoga, meditation, breakfast, and a short walk outside. This has been life changing and brings so much peace to my days.

We call it Moonlit Monday and it’s a tech free, mostly candle-lit evening of dinner, wine, and just talking or playing a laid back game.

It’s weirdly freeing not being allowed to have your phone. I also learn more—we have to keep a little notepad of “things to look up tomorrow” and the next day in our group chat we share all the answers to the things on the list, and I actually remember the info!

Overall after Moonlit Monday I feel like my body and mind has had a massage. Plus, it’s been a great bonding experience.

The USA obsession of “time is money” make people always live in this obsession for productivity 24:7. If we analyze nature, everything is made with pauses: your beath, your heart, etc. Thank you for writing this, I grown up in Brazil and this is common knowledge there but not here (even gyms are close on Sundays there and I love it). We need more quiet time 🙂

Sarah, thank you for your comment! I love how this sparked inspiration for you. One great point I didn’t find a place to mention in the article but that you might find insightful is an approach I’ve heard Brene Brown take with her family when it comes to their rest days. She and her family take time to discuss what’s uniquely restful for them individually. They each write down their own list of all the activities that fill them up. Then, they find where there’s overlap and spend their “rest time” enjoying those particular activities together. I thought this was a cool way to make it a family practice, not just an individual one!
